BARACK OBAMA is in Berlin today, where he is scheduled to speak to an enormous crowd in front of the Siegessäule. Mr Obama says it won't be a political speech, but something  closer to a presidential address . We'll be the judge of that. My colleague and I in New York will be Live-Blogging the speech , which should begin any minute now. 2:08  So there we have it. Germans seem to love Barack Obama almost as much as David Hasselhoff. Will most Americans care? Probably not. But speaking as an American, I must say that it's nice to see a leading political figure received warmly by an overseas crowd that isn't full of American soldiers. 1:54  One commentator on MSNBC just said that there was nothing to disagree with in the speech. As my colleague points out, that isn't quite true. The call for more troops in Afghanistan is far from the universal point of agreement in Germany that it might be in America. Talk about confronting Iran is still controversial in much of the world. True, it wasn't exactly surprising, but neither was it entirely vanilla. 1:53  A nice, non-partisan speech.  As Chuck Todd just said, John McCain could have given the same address. (But I doubt it would have drawn a crowd of a hundred thousand.) 1:51  He just ended; I swear I heard people chanting "Yes we can!" as he works the rope line. 1:42  Some think, wrongly, that Iran's nuclear programme is only an American and Israeli obsession. The loud cheer when Mr Obama said ...

7:20 PM, BERLIN, 24 July 2008 Senator Obama takes the podium and at first many in the crowd don't recognize him, for one of the Secret Service checking the podium shortly before is African-American. Obama calls himself not a candidate but a citizen, a citizen of the world. Speaking in English, with no German phrases, he begins quietly, to subdued applause. Immediately, he invokes freedom, complimenting Berlin, "this city of all cities knows the dream of freedom." Now is the time to build more bridges across the world." Interestingly, Obama is echoing much of Bill Clinton's speech at the Brandenburg Gate on July 12, 1994. "Building bridges, not walls," Clinton had said. Despite the distracting echo from the video screens down the Strasse, the crowd is slowly warming to Obama. They aren't so enthused about "a new dawn in the Middle East," but they applaud on Darfur, nuclear weaponry and "saving the planet"--the latter most of all. Berliners take in politely Obama's call for more action in Afghanistan. "People of Berlin, this is our moment, this is our time.". Now towards the end of his speech, the Senator weaves in common phrases from his campaign. "The road ahead will be long." The crowd has liked some of what they heard, but clearly they are just getting to know Barack Obama. To what extent he has met their expectations remains to be seen. Obama himself seems tired. At one point, he even stumbled in his phrasing--a rarity for him ...

When the CEO one of the most followed companies on the Web goes on stage for two hours, you can bet that the press will be listening to every word, looking to break a major piece of news for their respective organization. But yesterday, with Mark Zuckerberg on stage at F8, why did we all (including us) feel so compelled to “Live blog” the event, given it was being broadcast Live on video – quite publicly - via Facebook’s own web site? In retrospect, it seems rather ridiculous. While plenty of big news came out of the event – the launch of Facebook Connect , Facebook Translations for Developers , and the Great Apps program , just to name a few things – it seems like those who cared enough to get these announcements “Live” were most likely either in attendance or watching the video stream. Beyond that, if people wanted to discuss the announcements, Twitter or Friendfeed offered a perfect medium. This is all besides the fact that the press release itemizing Facebook’s major product launches was distributed to the media moments after Zuckerberg took the stage, leading us (and a number of other tech blogs) to publish stories detailing the news before Facebook even got to that part of their presentation. Liveblogging certainly has its place, especially for events where not everyone has access. But what are we gaining by liveblogging something that everyone else can see? And it’s not just keynote speeches at conferences either – blogs n ...

Photo: Getty Images After much anticipation, Barack Obama's Berlin speech is upon us. Adoring Germans are expected to turn up in the thousands, tens of thousands, or perhaps billions to see their new favorite American politician. Obama had originally considered giving the speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate, but after critics contended the site was inappropriate for someone who hasn't even won the election yet, Obama decided to deliver the same exact speech in front of a different, less presumptuous symbolic landmark … the Victory Column. Though the theme of the address is European-American relations, the precise details are unknown. Will he say something in German, like JFK? Will he tell Mr. Gorbachev to tear down this wall, like Ronald Reagan? We'll Live-blog the event and let you know. 1:09 p.m.: The crowds look pretty huge and enthusiastic despite this not being a David Hasselhoff concert. 1:10 p.m.: They've begun alternating "O-ba-ma" and "Yes we can!" chants as they await his arrival. Now they've seemingly given up. Unusually disorganized for Germans. 1:21 p.m.: Obama emerges, he's greeted with uproarious cheers. 1:22 p.m.: The crowd starts the Obama chant again. Obama says thank you literally twelve times. 1:23 p.m.: “I speak to you not as a candidate for president, but as a citizen." Sure, whatever you say. 1:29 p.m.: Obama starts with a history of the Berlin airlift, and the rebuilding of Germany after WWII. He tells ...

Commenters, for this week's challenge, you will have 60 minutes — starting at exactly 9 pm Eastern — to construct a Project Runway "liveblog" using nothing by sandpaper, twine and fruit rollups. If you don’t have access to those materials, then please just use the wit, perceptiveness and itchy posting fingers that are the hallmark of Gawker commenters the world over. Your moderator, commenter MisterHippity , introduces himself and lays some ground rules after the jump. I am your host, Hippity Klum, and my role is to contribute little of real value but look ridiculously hot in the process. (You'll have to use your imagination here) Also, I have a couple of simple ground rules to cover: 1. Some Project Runway spoilers have been floating around, which probably aren't true. Nevertheless, it's impolite to post any of them here because some people don't want to read them involuntarily, so please don't. 2. Please don't wear hats indoors — and comb that "fauxhawk" out of your hair. That sort of thing may fly among Bravo reality show contestants, but it won't pass muster here. That's it. Those are the only rules. Oh, and don't forget the Wow Factor; that's very important. Also, remember to turn on your TV. And above all else, don't bore Nina! ...

1:40: It's exciting to be here liveblogging the Facebook Developer's Conference . Boy, these guys know how to spice up an industry event—talk about putting the “social” in “social media.” They keep serving free drinks! OK, I’ll just take a sip.   1:49: Can’t wait to hear Zuckerberg’s speech. I wish I’d gone to Harvard, studied super-hard, busted my hump and stole the idea for Facebook like he did. Guy’s a genius.   2:02: No sign of Mark Z. These rum coolers are amazing, though. Guy next to me is Twittering away. His name tag just says “Steve.” Begs the question: Jobs or Hall? Either way, I’m not saving his seat when he gets up to use the men’s room.   2:05: The show’s starting. Is that Zuckerberg? I thought he was younger. And had hair. And was a guy. The first slide says, “Shaken and stirred.” The next: “Bottoms up.” Man, they’re getting weirder at Facebook every day.   2:19: I’d post some pix, but I can’t get this digital camera to work. Someone just handed me a rum cordial. Don’t mind if I ... d’oh! The thing went off, and the flash zapped me right in the eye. Lucky I’ve got two.   2:31: Eyesight’s back now. Wish that guy next to me would put his cell phone away. Maybe he’s one of the Twitterati. I thought they had to return to their lairs before sunrise.   2:34: Captain Morgan’s giving a PowerPoint presentation. The bars on the chart look like tiki bars. He says it’s time “to take the rum platform to the next level.” Aye, aye, ...

I Live blogged the Yahoo keynote so forgive the grammatical errors and typos. Frazier Miller: Rise of the Local Web, A Perfect Storm . Miller gave an engaging keynote that covered both online and mobile, user demand and advertising. Miller defined local in terms of four Yahoo properties: Search, Yahoo Local, Yahoo yellow pages, Upcoming. Interestingly Miller didn't include Yahoo's verticals, real estate, autos, maps, etc. Miller said that over 100 million uniques visit Yahoo with some sort of local intent (search and browse). When discussing "browse" behavior, he did reference the vertical properties. Click to continue reading... ...

Lee Hill, NPR Lee Hill, NPR Lee, here ... I'm here Blogging from Wishbone restaurant in Chicago, where Tell Me More is broadcasting Live from the popular dining spot in the city's West Loop. We're serving up a few tasty conversations today. From tuning in (or logging on here), you'll hear perspectives from Chicago businesswoman and Barack Obama campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett; Al Walavich, Lauren Fischer and Harold Lucas, all community voices who will talk about the unique cultural dynamics of this city; magazine editors Dawn Baskerville and Roy Johnson, will share what is gracing the pages of their latest magazines, Essence and Men's Fitness; and from Tania Urzerta, who is making big waves here in local Latino community radio. Also, the Wishbone staff has been more than helpful. We showed up on their doorstep this morning before sunrise to set up shop here. There were nothing but smiles to greet us (after they turned on the lights), so I just want to give some virtual dap to Carlos Ewing, Vicente Salgado, Lupe Munoz, Nadri Ayyen, Monica Goston, Misty Saint and Araceli Ariza. They've certainly earned their spot as part of our extended family. (Not to mention the fact the food here is, shall we say, slammin'). That's all for now... You can meet Michel Martin back here later, after the program. -- Lee Hill ...

By Jean-Yves Piton I recently came across some remarkable facts about Blogging. Did you know that, as of 2008, 70 million weblogs exist, about 120,000 new blogs are started each day or 1.4 new blogs are created every second, according to a report by David Sifry , founder and CEO of technorati . Impressive, isn’t it? And Blogging keeps on growing universally! As a business professional, do yourself a favor: embrace this change rapidly. Thanks to a recent analysis of the online behaviors of over 2 million worldwide candidates performed by comScore , Six Apart and Gawker Media , we discovered that bloggers are “significantly more likely to Live in wealthier households, be younger and connect to the Web on high-speed connections. Blog readers also visit nearly twice as many Web pages as the Internet average, and they are more likely to shop online.” Clearly, this fact alone should help you appreciate the importance of reaching out to this ever-growing target audience in order to grow your business. Equally important, do not underestimate the power of this innovative tool as part of your online marketing strategy worldwide. Search-engine marketing is predominantly gaining ground vis-à-vis other forms of online marketing. As you blog, your blog entries will consistently appear in search engines like Google and Yahoo , resulting in higher search-engine rankings to be seen by virtually anyone around the world. Needless to say, Blogging is muc ...
