The Colorado Rockies got a pair of pitching reinforcements Wednesday, claiming Livan Hernandez off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and activating Jeff Francis from the disabled list. Hernandez, a former World Series MVP and two-time All-Star, was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA in 23 starts before the Twins designated him for assignment Friday to make roster room for Francisco Liriano. "We've been struggling with our rotation this year," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "He's a great addition. ...

The Rockies' need for a proven starter led to a bold move Tuesday. Rather than wait for Livan Hernandez to become a free agent, the Rockies claimed the veteran right-hander on trade waivers, according to a major-league source. It is a bit surprising because by claiming him from the Minnesota Twins, the Rockies could get stuck with the roughly $1.6 million remaining on his contract. The next ... No, Livan he is not a great pitcher, but the Rangers merely require average pitching to get the job done. Livan could be used to AT LEAST settle the rotation down and give the bullpen a little easier time. Sure it would be cheaper to wait for him to clear waivers, but then all the contenders can grab him. If the Rangers pick up Hernandez off waivers, his contract was only $5 million plus $2 million worth of incentives. That is a small price to pay for an innings-eater starter with post-season experience. I would have no problem with a Padilla, Harrison, Hernandez, Mendoza, Millwood/Hunter rotation the rest of the way. Put Feldman in the bullpen along with Nippert, Hurley and Mathis when he returns. Get rid of Jamey Wright and send Madrigal down to Frisco for some AA playoff experience. Use a committee approach of Wilson, Francisco and Guardado to close out games. Hernandez, 33, was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA with the Twins, averaging almost exactly six innings in his 23 starts; he had allowed 199 hits in 139.2 innings, with 29 walks and 54 strikeouts. Other than giving up too many hits and 25 HRs a year, he has pitched 200 innings for ten straight years and would make it 11 if plugged in for the wild card run. He has always been about a 2 for 1 K/BB ratio which is fine. He has a career ERA of 4.32. Anything under 4.50 will be fine for the Rangers of right now. PLUS ... He is 6-3 with a 3.97 ERA in nine post-season series in his career. ...

Filed under: Rockies , NL West , MLB Transactions With the Minnesota Twins needing to make room for Francisco Liriano in their starting rotation as they try to make a run at another division title, it meant that somebody would have to go. That somebody was Livan Hernandez who the Twins had signed in the off-season to be the leader of a young pitching staff. Well, all Livan Hernandez led the Twins pitching staff in was hits allowed, runs against, and most fans cursing his name. Still, as I said when the move was first announced , the odds were that Livan would only be out of a job for a few days and it turns out I was right (the odds of which were 3000/1). Livan is the newest member of the Colorado Rockies . Livan Hernandez was claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies from the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. "We've been struggling with our rotation this year," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "He's a great addition." Dan O'Dowd has an odd definition of great, seeing as how Hernandez is 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA on the season, and has allowed five or more runs in nine of his twenty-three starts. Of course with the way the Rockies starting pitching has performed at times this year, I suppose Livan can be an improvement. Maybe a return to the National League where he spent his entire career before joining the Twins this season will be what Hernandez needs.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Word on the street is that the Twins are ready to bring Francisco Liriano back up to the Major League ranks.  To do this they will need to make room on the roster.  Rumor has it that the Twins will DFA Livan Hernandez to make room.  Apparently Minnesota's front office is willing to eat the rest of his $5 million contract.  Hernandez is 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA.  He has slumped lately, but was solid earlier in the year (about the time the Twins came to Coors Field).  If the Twins end up DFA'ing Hernandez, should the Rockies look into claiming the Cuban off waivers?  He has a good rep as an innings eater, and, if nothing else, he's sure better than Valerio De Los Santos. Your thoughts? ...

Rockies claim Twins' Hernandez on waivers By Troy E. Renck The Rockies’ need for a proven starter led to a bold move today. Rather than wait for Livan Hernandez to become a free agent, the Rockies claimed the veteran right-hander on trade waivers, according to a major league source. It is a bit surprising because by claiming him from the Minnesota Twins, the Rockies could get stuck with the roughly $1.6 million remaining on his contract. The next step is for the Twins to try and work out a trade with the Rockies. They could decide to eat a portion of Hernandez’s contract to receive a better player in return. The Rockies first acknowledged interest in Hernandez to The Denver Post last Saturday. They discussed the issue internally over the weekend. Hernandez’s contract at that time appeared problematic, with the team hoping to make a run at him if he cleared waivers. Colorado has been seeking an upgrade over tonight’s starter Jorge De La Rosa, tiring of him alternating brilliant performances with horrific ones that exhaust the bullpen. In addition to his remaining money, Hernandez, 33, will begin making $133,334 in incentives once he reaches 160 innings and for every five innings after that up to 230. Hernandez went 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA in 139 2/3 innings before getting designated for assignment last Friday to make room for Francisco Liriano. The Rockies have struggled to fill out their final two rotation spots for much of the seaso ...
