Unless the Irish, who rejected the Lisbon Treaty in a referendum in June, can be persuaded to vote again, Lisbon will die - and diplomats are wondering whether that would be such a bad thing. ...

by toxic avenger (Posted 22 hours ago) Words are actually failing me. A clear no vote, diminishing chance of a successful re-run, so Collins goes down the anti-democratic stitch-up route: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opi ... 80440.html Selected quotes: The Dáil must take the boldest of political steps - or else Ireland will return to being a client state of Britain, writes Stephen Collins THE SQUABBLE between the Government and Opposition over a proposed Dáil commission to examine the pros and cons of the Lisbon Treaty only goes to prove that a second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty is doomed to almost certain defeat. At this stage it is hard to see how a confused and divided Yes side will be any match for a confident No campaign, awash with money and unhampered by any allegiance to truth. So how can the Government find a way out of holding a second referendum while not ignoring the will of the people as expressed in June? The only way is for the Dáil to ratify the Lisbon Treaty while simultaneously opting out of areas such as the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which probably does require referendum approval, and the new defence arrangements whose misrepresentation prompted so many women to vote No. Dáil approval, with opt-outs being put to a referendum later, would require the agreement of all 26 of our EU partners, but it could allow all member states to proceed with the new arrangements for the European elections nex ...

by DeGaulle (Posted Yesterday, 8:31 pm) I would like to propose the following solution to the Lisbon problem:- - the government holds another referendum on ratifying Lisbon next year but commits itself (via a constitutional amendment if necessary) to immediately invoking the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty for a country to leave the EU. The advantages of this are:- - we would maintain good relations with the other EU governments, who could proceed with Lisbon - we would defeat the British eurosceptics who are attempting to use Ireland to attack the EU - we could make arrangements to remain within the Eurozone - we could negotiate an agreement that we could rejoin at some point at the future if we wished. Possibly, we could even rejoin with Croatia - but we could have a new membership agreement (and referendum) which would effectively enable us to renegotiate our membership conditions, if that was required. Disadvantages:- - a UK Conservative government might vero us rejoining - it would mean 2 more referendums - on for Lisbon+leaving and one for rejoining It may be somewhat legalistic to leave the EU and immediately rejoin it but maybe it is in the best interests of Ireland and Europe. href="http://www.politics.ie/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=39365"> ...

A third referendum will be held from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 26 in Lisbon. I urge all parents and guardians, and those who care for children and want quality education, to keep attuned of all information coming from the school. Lisbon Central School has a sign on Route 138 with information about upcoming events or meetings. Children will return to school the day after the vote with anticipation of looking to a new year of learning and living. How they begin this journey is with the people of Lisbon who have not voted. We need you now. To vote in the referendum you need not be a registered voter. If you own property in excess of $1,000 — your car counts — your name will appear on the voter registration list. We need you to vote yes. Absentee ballots are available at Town Hall if you cannot make the date. The new motto to Lisbon Central School is “Learning today for tomorrow.” There is no other reason. Please get out and vote. JOSEPH M. GRACIA Lisbon ...

How disappointing it was to view the results of the second referendum for the Lisbon education budget. It is beyond my comprehension how residents can deny students the opportunity for an optimal educational foundation that would well prepare them to succeed at the next level. Being the parent of two children, both graduates of Lisbon Central School, I’m well aware of the outstanding education they received. Adequate appropriations in the educational budgets are necessary. Now residents want to deny present-day students this opportunity. What a shame. Lisbon’s educational system always was a draw for families moving into the area. Budget decrease will impact the level of education being provided. Denying students a proper education is sinful. More than enough money has been wasted on referendums — money that is better spent on education. We are not a Greenwich, but we are living in the 21st century and our children deserve the best. Vote in favor of the education budget. MARY BELISLE New London ...
