How can it not work out this way? For the same price as a high-end dedicated device you can get a tablet that will do everything they can do and far more. But, and this is the important bit, you don't have to buy an Apple iPad to get all of the iPad's goodies. ARM, a mobile microprocessor power, is predicting that we'll see no less than 50 ARM-processor-powered iPad clones by year's end. And, what will they be running? on the same ESX box, we have a number of VMs running, which has both the Linux Redhead and Windows OS servers. we are not abusing the Windows OS servers by any mean, nor we are not giving it enough memory and CPU. The Windows and the Lunix VMs are sitting on the ESX's local disks. the issue: a lot of the Windows VMs are acting very slow while the Linux are running fine. Each time we RDP to a Windows VM, it was so slow to just even move the mouse around or to open up to browse some folders. And, trying to execute any program or scripts would just take minutes. we have set the hardware acceleration to the max on those Windows VMs. had anyone ever came across situation like this? what are some reasons that make the Windows servers operate slower compare to Linux servers? what makes the Linux to outperform the Windows? ... While cloud computing is merely a label given to the latest evolution of what organizations have been doing for a long time, one consistent component in the cloud has been Linux, said Jim Elliott, IBM Canada Ltd.'s Linux champion. "Linux is the past, present and future," said Elliott to an audience of IT pros during a ComputerWorld Canada Tech Insights event entitled The Linux-Powered Cloud. Low-cost Linux-based systems were what dot.com-era startups in the late 1990s were built on, said Elliott. Today, Linux is the dominant cloud computing operating system with large and well-known public cloud infrastructures like Google and Amazon using Linux, he said. And, in the future, the role of Linux isn't changing, said Elliott: "Linux will be the cloud's future." The benefits of Linux, said Elliott, include the ability to scale across the smallest to largest of systems, available patch management and security software, attractive licensing costs and terms, and the extensive application and partner ecosystem. While Elliott believes Linux is the ideal choice for cloud computing, he said any operating system will work because it's really just a matter of making applications available. Elliott breaks down cloud computing into three essential components. One, virtualization allows resources to be shared in a dynamic fashion. So, it’s not your typical date-night movie, and maybe I’m the last person to know this documentary exists, but I was happy to find the film (1hour, 25 minutes), Revolution OS on Google Video . Written and directed by J.T.S. Moore , the documentary features interviews with Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, Bruce Perens, and a number of other prominent open source pioneers and advocates. I found it to be a very interesting and engaging film. I rather enjoyed the dramatic voice-over narration of Bill Gates’ Open Letter to Hobbyists , which gradually approaches a rather frenzied crescendo. It was nice to see all the principals speak for themselves, having mostly only read interviews and seen photos with news stories. (Is it weird that I think Linux Torvalds is kind of cute?) I also found myself mentally casting the Coen Brothers film version of the Linux story (wouldn’t that be fun?). What great characters: Stallman ( Devendra Banhard t — its all about the hair); Torvalds (Mike Myers — he already has the glasses), and Perens ( Jason Segel ), and Philip Seymour Hoffman is so Eric Raymond!
