October 11, 2008. A Wise Women Speaker Linda Ellerbee is an outspoken journalist, award-winning television producer, best-selling author, a breast cancer survivor, a mom, a grandmother and one of the most sought-after speakers in America. Linda began her career at CBS, NBC News, and ABC News, before she Rolfe Tessem, her partner, quit network news to start Lucky Duck Productions. In 1991, Lucky Duck began producing Nick News for Nickelodeon with Linda writing and hosting. Sixteen years later, Nick News is watched by more children than watch all other television news shows put together. Known for the respectful and direct way it speaks to children about the important issues of our time, Nick News has collected three Peabody Awards (including one personal Peabody given to Ellerbee for her coverage of the Clinton investigation), a duPont Columbia Award, and five Emmys. Ellerbee's first foray into books for kids, an eight-part fiction series entitled Get Real, published in 2000, won her raves among middle school readers.àBoth of Ellerbee's previous adult books-And So It Goes, a humorous look at television news, and Move On, stories about being a working single mother and a child of the âÂÂ60s, have been national best sellers. Ellerbee's newest book, also a best seller, Take Big Bites: Adventures Around the World and Across the Table, is a humorous account of her love of travel, talking to (and eating with) strangers, and, according t ... Dan Rather Anchor of "Dan Rather Reports" on HD Net Let's tear down the structure and rebuild from the ground up. We might use as our model the debates that history remembers as the finest exemplars -- those between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in 1858, as the two vied for one of Illinois' seats in the U.S. Senate. These confrontations followed classic forensic structure -- resolutions, followed by rebuttals, followed in turn by surrebuttals. As for moderation, let's get journalists and their questions out of the picture. This format would need a timekeeper or referee and little more. The topics could be determined beforehand by the debate organizers or by the candidates. And let's allow plenty of time for detailed, developed elucidations and examinations of policy. No more should an ill-informed candidate be able to filibuster through an allotted minute without answering the question. In every case, the opposing candidate will be on hand to provide a check to falsehoods, obfuscation and spin. That's the kind of debate I'd like to see. Bill O'Reilly Host of "The O'Reilly Factor" on the Fox News Channel The problem is that the moderators are too nice. These men and women were chosen to lob questions chiefly because of their civility. They ask heavily prepared questions; the candidates answer what they want. The journalists follow up; the candidates answer what they want. To quote Linda Ellerbee, "And so it goes." Debates shou ... Source: www.nydailynews.com --- 102 days ago

The film work of Paul Newman, who died Sept. 26, is celebrated in an 11-film all day retrospective on Turner Movie Classics beginning with "The Rack" (6 a.m.) and continuing with "Until They Sail" (8 a.m.), "Torn Curtain" (10 a.m.), "Exodus" (12:15 p.m.), "Sweet Bird of Youth" (3:45 p.m.), "Hud" (6 p.m.), "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (8 p.m.), "Cool Hand Luke" (10 p.m.), "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (12:15 a.m.), "Rachel Rachel" (2:15 a.m.), which Newman directed; and "The Outrage" (4 a.m.). Don is en route to Los Angeles on "Mad Men" (AMC, 10 p.m.), where back in the office Peggy contemplates an office romance and Duck's future at Sterling Cooper looks dead. Just two episodes are left after this. The occasional series "America at the Crossroads" (PBS, 10 p.m.) returns to explore one aspect of the war that remains underreported: "The Trail of Saddam Hussein," found to be grossly political and ultimately badly handled, including the last minute replacement of the judge during final deliberations. There is no constituency that goes ignored by John McCain and Barack Obama. The two stop in to be interviewed by non-voters on "Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Kids Pick the President" (Nickelodeon, 9 p.m.). There are a lot of clear, straightforward questions from the young ones, but also an inquiry as to their favorite Halloween costumes (tellingly, the answer for both is: pirates!). After all the primaries, all the commercials and all the hype, we’re still about a month away from the day that we will elect a new president. I know some folks have already cast their ballots through absentee or early voting. But my husband and I are a little more old school. We like to go to the polls and we take the kids with us. They get a chance to see democracy in action, so to speak. Just last year, our sons got a lesson on the touch screen machine (those aren’t used anymore) and they voted for George Washington. The poll workers are always really nice and they definitely make sure to give the boys the cool “I Voted” stickers as we are leaving. So maybe you are trying to decide how to get your kids involved in this thing we call democracy. Whether you lean to the left, right or have a more independent streak, here are some fun ideas for you. To let your children hear from the candidates themselves, check out the latest Nick News With Linda Ellerbee: Kids Pick the President special airing at 9 p.m. Sunday. That may be a little too late for some so it might be a good idea to set up the Tivo. Presidential hopefuls Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama will answer questions that have been submitted by kids that touch on a wide range of topics: health insurance, immigration, the war in Iraq and global warming. And following the show, youngsters can go online to Nickelodeon and “vote” for their candidate Sunday though Oct. 20. The winn ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 98 days ago

Four Durham students will get their own questions answered by the nation's presidential candidates. Kedric Wright, Kelvin Wright, Vanessa Canuto, and Ericka Gorham questioned the candidates about immigration policy, gas prices, and the war on Iraq. The students recorded their questions in May, and according to Nickelodeon, candidates will listen to recorded questions and respond. Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama will answer the questions on a Nickelodeon special slated to air on Sunday night. "I think candidates should pay attention to young people because the issues will get worse over time if you don't; and we're the next generation of voters, so they should pay attention to the issues now," said Canuto. Canuto asked the candidates about the impact of modern immigration policy on families. "Why are they making it like that so that families get split up? Why not give them a chance or something?" she said. The program is called "Kids Pick the President." Linda Ellerbee will host the program. It will air on Nickelodeon at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct 12. ... Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain are scheduled to appear on Nickelodeon’s election mainstay, “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Kids Pick the President.” The show, scheduled to air Oct. 12, will feature the candidates fielding questions from kids about everything from the economy to health insurance. The network traveled across the United States and videotaped kids’ questions for Senators McCain and Obama. “Democracy works only if you participate in it, and this year we’ve all seen that kids are more interested than ever in participating,” said host Linda Ellerbee, in a statement. “We like to encourage this. The candidates, by answering kids’ questions directly, are showing respect for kids, as have the presidential candidates in previous elections.” (Editor: Baumann) ... Looking for family specials keyed to the 4th of July weekend? One of the best is the latest Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special on Nickelodeon (9 p.m. ET Sunday), titled Coming Home: When Parents Return from War. It explains a lot. It speaks clearly and cleverly. It never condescends. Ellerbee has been taking that approach for a long time. First on NBC in the 1970s and early 1980s, presiding over Weekend and NBC News Overnight with equal helpings of insight and attitude. Then, in 1986, presenting one of TV's best documentary series with ABC's Our World . (Why isn't the History channel repeating this?) And by 1992, when talking plainly to adults was becoming unfashionable on prime-time TV, Ellerbee went to cable, and Nickelodeon, and kids. For more than 15 years now, she's presented Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, tackling every serious missue you can imagine, and many playful ones, too. Sunday's edition about the war isn't her first on the topic. It isn't even her first war, because Nick News was there to talk about kids' perceptions and fears during the first Gulf War. She was there, too, right after 9/11, when young viewers (and, arguably, lots of older ones) needed her most. So for Sunday's special, Coming Home: When Parents Return from War, Ellerbee presents herself -- and has earned the right to do so -- as a comfy TV friend, wearing jeans, orange high-top sneakers, and a welcoming smile. This time, instead of talking to a small ... Source: www.topix.com --- 93 days ago
