Among the myriad crimes of Michael Moore was his sandbagging of Charlton Heston in Bowling for Columbine . It was a moment everyone could hate: the anti-Heston crowd, for seeing the Moses of the NRA rendered feeble and sympathetic, and the pro-Heston crowd, for seeing the Moses of Hollywood... ...

When word arrived in April that Charlton Heston had succumbed to pneumonia at 84, the first image from the Illinois-born actor's deep gallery of outsized roles that came to my mind was not one that was excerpted in the news coverage announcing his passing. Heston's Oscar-winning part in "Ben Hur," his turn as a scowling Mexican policeman in Orson Welles's "Touch of Evil," his ultimate ride into history and eternity in "El Cid," his climactic disclosure of precisely what ingredients made up the... ...

You can get to Carnegie Hall with practice, practice, practice, but Lincoln Center has been harder to navigate as it undergoes its massive, multi-million dollar renovation project . One woman told the NY Times that on her way to see "South Pacific" at the Lincoln Center Theater, she got lost after trying to find her mother amidst the construction: "Suddenly I felt like a contestant on ‘Survivor.' I knew what I had to do,” she added. “ ‘Help!’ I screamed, ‘Somebody, help us!’" (And security showed up to help them to the theater.) You can see how Lincoln Center is all boarded up via this Times diagram . Ron Austin, executive director of the development project, explained, “It’s a very broad challenge. On some level, it’s a herculean task. Lincoln Center is not a project. It’s 37 projects that are running simultaneously.” And it won't even be done until 2011, so opera fans, sit tight . ...

When Police Chief Gordon Russell was a boy growing up in Boxford, Lincoln Hall had the aura of a large concert room. The future Boxford Police chief said the stage, only 3 feet off the ground, made you feel as though you were on the world’s stage. “It looked enormous,” Russell said about Lincoln Hall, which recently underwent a nearly yearlong renovation project. “It was like you were appearing at Carnegie Hall.” Russell, as well as many other town volunteers and employees, curiously meandered around Lincoln Hall during its grand re-opening Thursday afternoon, making small talk and enjoying waiter-served hors d'oeuvres. The waxed wooden floorboards shined in the hall’s soft yet illuminating interior lights and many stopped to admire the original molding and doorways restored to historic accuracy. For years, the fate of the 93-year-old former Town Hall was in question, as many had considered tearing it down due to its poor condition. The hall was always unbearably hot in the summer and uncomfortably cold in the winter. The dingy and dark basement did not boast the ideal meeting space. But Boxford voters approved a number of decisions concerning the hall, which showed administrators and committee members that this was a building worth saving. Renovations included installing an elevator, reconstructing bathrooms, and giving the building a brand new heating and air conditioning unit. Many of the renovations were made to comply with t ...

The new plaques are made of faïence and look like restorations of original work (but they are not; Lincoln Center did not exist in 1904!).
