Aaron Rowand says any talk about the National League Cy Young Award should begin and end with San Francisco teammate Tim Lincecum. "All you have to do is take a look at his numbers," the Giants' center fielder said. "With the exception of one, maybe two starts, all season long he's been dominating. You talk to guys on the other team that have to face him and all of them are pretty impressed with the way that he's developed, not only with his pitches but his maturity and learning how to pitch. ... Before his final pitch, Tim Lincecum shook off catcher Bengie Molina. Molina called for a fastball, naturally. It was the 10th pitch of Omar Infante's at-bat and Lincecum's 117th pitch of the game. But Lincecum wanted to throw a slider. So Molina called for a... ... Source: www.sfgate.com --- 7 days ago
The pitching duel involved a big guy who threw soft stuff and a little guy who threw hard stuff. Large Livan was in control early, but Tiny Tim wowed them in the end. Well, not the very end. Tim Lincecum surpassed his innings total from 2007 on Friday. Though he knows he's being closely monitored by the coaching staff, the Giants' ace has thrown 1492/3 innings - fourth most in the National League - and doesn't want to get shut down prematurely,... ... DENVER With another electric start Tuesday night, Tim Lincecum might have claimed front-runner status in the minds of Cy Young Award voters. Instead, the Colorado Rockies tagged him for his worst inning of the season. ... Source: baseball.pressdemocrat.com --- 7 days ago
So many storylines from Wednesday night's 4-1 victory over the Rockies, far too many to fit into the newspaper. That's what blogs are for! Boring? Who's boring?: After Tim Lincecum's last start, Omar Vizquel joked that he got bored playing Lincecum because he struck everyone out. So Lincecum responded: "He said it was boring, so I wanted to give him a chance to for a play he could make look pretty." In the sixth inning, Matt Holliday hit a line drive to Vizquel's right, and Vizquel made a diving catch. Vizquel also made a barehanded relay on a double play to end the game. Hustle : The Giants manufactured their two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with some very nice hustle and execution. After Vizquel's leadoff single, Eugenio Velez and Dave Roberts both put down perfect bunts. On Velez's, the Rockies tried for an out at second that they didn't get. On Roberts', the Rockies made an error, allowing a run to score. After a strikeout, Randy Winn hit a grounder to first baseman Garrett Atkins, who stepped on the bag and threw to second for the double play. But it wasn't a force out at second, so the Giants got the run because Velez hustled down the line and scored just before Roberts was tagged out to end the inning. The Throw : At one point, it looked like the biggest play of the game was going to be Willy Taveras' throw home to nail Roberts trying to score on a fly ball. Bochy called it one of the best throws he's ever seen. T ... Source: baseball.pressdemocrat.com --- 7 days ago
After Tim Lincecum's impressive performance on Wednesday night, time for a quick re-evaluation of the Cy Young race. As I wrote before, you really shouldn't need to look deeper than these three stats: victories, ERA and opponents on-base percentage. They measure how often a pitcher won, how many runs he gave up and how many outs he got. Anything else is just trivia. Here's the latest tale of the tape: Lincecum Webb W-L 15-3 (.833) 19-5 (.791) ERA 2.43 2.96 Opp. OBP .297 .288 Given the events of the last two days -- another great game for Lincecum and a stinker for Webb -- I have to say that Lincecum probably has a slight lead. It's nothing that can't go the other way if they reverse performances the next time, so don't celebrate yet Lincemaniacs. There's still a month to go. Don't forget also that Webb is going to get a lot of mileage in the last week or two if he wins some big games to help the Diamondbacks get to the playoffs. While I personally don't feel a team's performance is as relevant in the Cy Young as it is in the MVP, many voters disagree. Now, about that pitch-count thing. Esteemed colleague Bruce Jenkins of Chronicle wrote a pair of stories this week examining the issue of the disappearance of the complete game , and how to bring them back . It seemed a strange coincidence that just after these stories were published, Giants manager Bruce Bochy let Lincecum throw 132 pitches, the most any Giants pitcher had thrown in his ...

Omar Vizquel is making a rare start at shortstop tonight for the Giants, but it was predictable. The only four games Vizquel has started since Aug. 14 have been the four games started by Lincecum in that span. Coincidence? Before last Thursday's game in San Francisco, manager Bruce Bochy said it was a coincidence, but now that he's done it again, I am not buying it. I'm guessing that Bochy wants to get his best possible defensive team out there behind Lincecum. He may also figure that the Giants can afford to give up a little offense when Lincecum is pitching. Dave Roberts has also been in left in two of Lincecum's starts in a row. However, that could also be because the last two have both been against Rockies righty Livan Hernandez. Roberts is only a .260 hitter against Livo, but he's faced him 50 times. ... Find more results for Lincecum on RSSMicro.com |
