THE PROMOTION is a low-key, deader than deadpan comedy-drama that fans of THE OFFICE should love. The film stars Sean William Scott (AMERICAN PIE) and John C. Reilly (TALLADEGA NIGHTS) as assistant managers dueling for the same promotion within their Chicago-area grocery chain. Doug (Scott) is initially so sure the job is his that he takes all sorts of financial risks to impress his wife (Jenna Fischer); Richard (Reilly) is a transfer from Canada with an addiction to self-help tapes, plus a druggie biker past he needs to keep under wraps as the interview process heats up and the undercutting begins. Writer-director Steve Conrad continues exploring his fascination with how average Americans measure themselves and fight for their slice of the pie, a study he began in his acclaimed screenplays for THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS and THE WEATHER MAN. As a director he's too caustic and straight-faced to be his generation's Frank Capra, but maybe that just reflects the more complex times. THE PROMOTION captures an America in regression, a land where once-certain futures are suddenly up for grabs, and the film's cagey shifts from improv-style comedy to personal drama keep one guessing all the way to the finish line. 3.5 out of 5 Stars Based on a Japanese novel, this film was like a darker, updated version of 'Freaky Friday'. But with so much more to it -- understanding generational gaps, coping with grief and mourning, the guilt of regret and what was left unsaid, and an air of dark and metaphysical underlying themes. A well made film, strengthened by such a strong cast -- Olivia Thirlby is quickly topping my list of very talented young actors -- I am eager to see her make more of these unique indy choices (she certainly held my interest in 'The Wackness'). In 2004, my Phoenix colleague Mike Miliard wrote a great piece about Massachusetts native Nick Flynn , and Flynn's memoir: Another Bullshit Night in Suck City (WW Norton, 2004). Flynn's first full-length play, Alice Invents A Little Game and Alice Always Wins was published by Faber & Faber this month, and I had the chance to read it over the weekend. These days, Flynn's a part-time (upstate) New Yorker, and the play takes place on the streets of New York City, where four (strange) strangers meet on the sidewalk during a blackout. It's funny, quirky, short, and smart, with dark undertones (rather like Flynn himself -- well, I'm not sure about the short part). I'll look forward to seeing it staged around here someday soon. It would be especially cool if Flynn's partner, actress Lili Taylor , could reprise her role as Alice, which she played when the show was being workshopped in New York. ... My mother-in-law Joan has lived for the past several decades in two of the most beautiful spots in the country. Berkshire County in Western Mass. (where Keith grew up), and currently at Lord's Point in Stonington, Connecticut. Stonington is down the road from Mystic, which you may know from Julia Roberts' break-out role in Mystic Pizza . Yes, there she is in Mystic . Also starring Lili Taylor, and a memorable scene involving an expensive sports car and the catch of the day. What is there to do at Lord's Point? Jackson helped clean up several streets and removed quite a pile of fireworks debris from the coastline after 4th of July. Thousands of hermit crabs tipped their snail shell homes to him the following day. We swam in the Atlantic, which is really calm at Lord's Point. Sea kayaking is more like lake kayaking. The water is balmy in July, so jump on in. Be prepared to encounter seaweed--pretend you're a mermaid! (Easy to do when you emerge with sea grass sticking out of your bathing suit.) In Mystic, trains, fireboats and huge sailing vessels compete for our attention with the ancient drawbridge that goes up every hour to let seafaring folk pass through. Next to the drawbridge is an old-fashioned ice cream shop with views of the water and shipyard. Did I mention the Paradise-like nature of the area? Here are the DVD releases for Tuesday August 12, 2008. Once again, we have a relatively slow week. SMART PEOPLE - Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Thomas Haden Church and Juno in this comedy / drama that critics said was too smart for dumb people and too dumb for smart people. For all the mediocre out there. THE SECRET - I’ve never heard of this horror film even though it stars David Duchovny, Lili Taylor and Olivia Thirlby (JUNO’s friend). I read one very funny review of it on Netflix that I think/hope was a joke that said something like "I don't know why Oprah loves this movie so much. Maybe the book is better." BRAND UPON THE BRAIN - Criterion release of cult filmmaker Guy Maddin’s film. LARISA SHEPITKO set - Criterion Eclipse release of the Soviet filmmaker. KILLING GENE - A horror film with Stellan Skarsgard and Selma Blair. From the write-up it sort of sounds like a SAW knock off. NINJA CHEERLEADERS - Remember that season of THE REAL WORLD where they reunited the cast of the Las Vegas season back in Vegas? And they all went and watched the trailer to Trishelle’s new film? This is that film. It has been on the shelf for that many years. THE LOVE BOAT SEASON 1, VOLUME 2 - I’ve been going through Volume 1 of this and have to say, it really holds up. So I just started watching Six Feet Under recently. I hadn't seen it before. It's kinda funny recognizing all these actors from other works. Look! Dexter, and the wife from Ira and Abbey and the cop from The Lost Room and the college student from Starting Out in the Evening ! I'd heard that it was well-written, and I've been quite impressed with the writing so far. I'm part-way in to the second season. In an episode I watched tonight, there's a great sequence in which Nate visits his friend (Lili Taylor) and there's this great scene where the text doesn't confirm that they slept together, but everything about their goodbye scene makes it clear that they did. If I didn't know the context, I would've assumed that this was an old picture from some film of the past that I missed. But no, this is the actor filming on his 45th birthday. Public Enemies is the sure-to-be-awesome Great Depression drama starring Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis, who is trying to stop notorious bad boys John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum).
