Passionate about the "freedom to read," local librarians are reminding readers about their First Amendment rights during Banned Books Week. "I'm a librarian, I don't want to see anything banned," Milford Town Library Director Susan Edmonds said, explaining why she promotes Banned Books Week. The event, sponsored in part by the American Library Association, takes place the last week of September to highlight the importance of the democratic freedom to read. The controversy has recently moved to the political forefront, after reports circulated that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, soon after being elected mayor of her hometown, Wasilla, Alaska, in 1996, questioned the librarian about what her response would be to the idea of potentially banning some books. Campaign managers for Republican presidential nominee John McCain were quick to defend Palin, saying her questions about banning books while serving as mayor in Wasilla were only hypothetical. Head librarian Mary Ellen Emmons was quoted nearly 10 years ago in an Alaskan newspaper replying "yup," when asked by Palin if she would object to censorship. Palin notified Emmons she would be fired in January 1997 because the mayor didn't feel she had the librarian's "full support." Emmons was reinstated the next day after public outcry, according to newspaper reports at the time. Though Edmonds said she has never faced such contention in Milford, her reaction would para ...

What do Kinsey Keller, 27, Jane Stanton, 93, and Philo Gray, 8, have in common? They are among hundreds of people who are using Libraries more these days. According to the Pioneer Library System, which encompasses the 42 public Libraries in Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming and Livingston counties, circulation of library materials and attendance at library programs are soaring. “If you are looking to cut corners,” said Jennifer Morris, the Pioneer system’s executive director, a free library card is the way to go. Borrowing library materials such as DVDs, best-sellers and magazines beats renting or buying at a time when families are paying more for gas, food and heating fuel. A library card is the one “card in your wallet that actually saves you money,” Morris added. Recent attendance at library programs is a big part of the picture. In Wayne County, Red Creek Library had so many children sign up for its summer reading program, a neighboring business came to the rescue by donating more space and the library still held two separate programs to accommodate everyone. The Palmyra Kings Daughters Free Library had a similar story. “So many kids signed up, we had waiting lists,” said director Patricia Baynes. In Ontario County, Victor Free Library had more than 500 children sign up for its summer reading program — dozens more than in past years. And at Canandaigua’s Wood Library, young-adult librarian Jenny Goodemote said she was astounded to have ...

This is something that's been bugging me for a long time now. Over the years, I've come to realize that programming time is 10% about writing the code to do the work, 70% about figuring out where failures might occur and dealing with them, 10% about documentation, and 10% about documentation. (That last 10% may be substituted with Desktop Tower Defense or something equally time wasting.) Or something like that. The point is that writing the code to do what I want isn't hard. It's dealing with all the other things that do--especially error conditions. There are so many weird corner cases to consider. And when you're working on code for a high volume web site that has its servers under load 24 hours a day, it doesn't take long to encounter those odd situations. Murphy is always watching. Years ago, after battling similar problems at Yahoo, I began to develop certain ideas about how errors should be detected, handled, and reported. An important idea here is that the developer should always be in control of when the script/program/process dies. Aside from something truly fatal (like a segfault) library routines should detect errors and report them back to their caller in the form of a known-to-be-bad return value. The problem is that I keep running into code I want to use that breaks that rule in multiple places. In Perl terms, that means that I'll be happily testing my code and suddenly something goes wrong and my script dies in a pl ...
