A convicted bank robber the FBI nicknamed the "Zombie Bandit" during a string of bank holdups in the Midwest in 1991 is the suspect in a robbery last week in Medford. Surveillance videos convinced investigators the man who robbed the Liberty Bank on Dec. 30 is 67-year-old Alan David Hurwitz, who served prison time for holdups at 18 banks across Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. "He is not the most likely bank robber, but we have seen people fall off the pedestal in the past and resort to crime," Medford police Lt. Tim Doney said. The FBI nicknamed him the "Zombie Bandit" because of the vacant look on his face during the Midwest robberies. Hurwitz was arrested in 1992 and sentenced to 12 years in federal prison. Police describe him as a man who did a lot of good until a drug habit turned him to crime. "He's done a lot of good in his life, but he has been a slave to crack cocaine," Medford police Deputy Chief Tim George said. At one time Hurwitz was a Detroit teacher, a staff member at Michigan State University, a member of a task force on school violence and a deputy director of the Peace Corps in Kenya, according to a 2005 profile in Detroit's Metro Times newspaper. Hurwitz told the newspaper he might move to Northern California to be with his daughters. The robber who Medford police believe was Hurwitz displayed a handgun and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash through a parking lot. Doney views him as a dangerous criminal ... (By Joe Habina, Special Correspondent) Charlotte Christian High School senior basketball player Willis Hall was on a recruiting trip to Harvard in the fall when someone approached him on the streets of Boston. The passerby noticed his Knights sweatshirt and approached Hall with a question. “Is that where that Curry kid went, the one that plays at Davidson?” the man asked. It was, Hall confirmed, astonished that someone so far away would recognize his school's shirt. The success of brothers Stephen (junior, Davidson College) and Seth Curry (freshman, Liberty University) has given the Christian boys' basketball team plenty of recognition and inspiration. While players relish the Currys' association with their high school and are motivated by their “big fish in a small pond” college careers, the Knights are looking forward to a possible state playoff run of their own this season. Most know the story. The sons of former NBA great Dell Curry, Stephen and Seth were standout players at Christian before moving on to star at their smaller-level colleges. Steph, as Knights coach Shonn Brown and current Christian players call him, led Christian to the 2006 private/independent schools' state championship game and left with the school's career record for points (1,440). He achieved all-American status at Davidson and is Division I college basketball's leading scorer this season (30 ppg). Steph was recently named The Sporting News College Athlete of ... MEMPHIS The University of Kentucky football program made history by winning a bowl game for the third consecutive season with Friday night's scintillating 25-19 win over East Carolina in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The Cats will try to add to the record book in 2009 when they go for a fourth straight bowl bid. The seniors wrapped up their careers with a 26-24 record over the past four years, and they see no reason why the Wildcat program can't continue the momentum. "The shape things are in right now, this program expects to go to bowl games every year," said senior linebacker Braxton Kelley. "And eventually Kentucky will challenge for an SEC title." ... MEMPHIS — The University of Kentucky knew it would need a big lift from its defense in order to win the AutoZone Liberty Bowl against East Carolina. The Wildcat defenders played the first half like their minds were still on Beale Street. But when the game was on the line, they won the game not only once, but twice. Two plays after what appeared to be a go-ahead, 17-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Micah Johnson was overturned by a replay judge, defensive end Ventrell Jenkins scooped up another fumble and ran it 56 yards for a score with 3:02 remaining. The Wildcats then forced ECU to punt with 2:27 left, ran out the clock behind senior running back Tony Dixon, and headed off to celebrate a 25-19 victory in front of a crowd of 56,251. ...
