Especially those who grew up with Gay in the Winburn and Willow Oak areas of Lexington. Gay, who set the American record (9.77 seconds) and ran a wind-aided but fastest-ever under any conditions 9.68 at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, is scheduled to run the 100 meters and the 4-by-100 relay at Beijing. More walking and biking trails and additional land dedicated to equestrian activities were among suggestions received at a public comment meeting Monday night to help the Lexington's parks department develop a master plan with goals for the next 10 years. As biking grows in popularity, several people said, they would like to see more off-road pathways for commuting and recreational riding. Ideally, city parks could be linked by a series of greenways for longer rides. About 40 people attended a meeting at Picadome Golf Course moderated by Chris Camp, president of Lose & Associates of Nashville, a recreation planning and design firm. The company was hired by the Division of Parks and Recreation to develop a new master plan that will guide setting up new programs. “Young people don't play the same way they did 10 years ago,” said Jerry Hancock, director of parks, told the audience. Part of a master plan is assessing current activities and what needs to change. ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 14 days ago

Two Lexington youth golfers will have the chance to play one of the game's most pristine courses on Labor Day weekend. Connor Rose of Lexington Christian Academy and Pilar Morgan of Henry Clay High School both qualified for a trip to California to take on Pebble Beach Golf Links during the Wal-Mart First Tee Open, a Champions Tour event. Rose and Morgan both earned the trip through the local Larry Gilbert Foundation/First Tee of Lexington, a local chapter of National First Tee. “National First Tee is a youth golf organization that takes the game of golf and relates it to the game of life,” said Dave Bunnell, the executive director of First Tee of Lexington. “It takes core values and relates how they apply to golf and how they apply to life.” ...
