Lewis Carrol started writing "Sylvie and Bruno" and "Sylvie and Bruno Concluded" as a single work, but then decided to publish it in two parts in 1889 and 1893. I've created an eBook of the two parts together. This is a hard work to classify. It has fantasy, it has humor, it has philosophy, some parts are niche for children, some parts contain more "grown-up" thoughts. Nevertheless, the style and imagination of Carroll is evident throughout the book. It is also surprising how he manages to touch so many subjects of interest today, quotes and situations can be found to illustrate relativity, evolution, topology, emergent intelligence, self-referencing... It's, in my opinion, a very pleasant work to read and a nice discovery. The book is fully illustrated with the 92 original illustrations by Harry Furniss. I created the PDF with pdflatex. The book is nicely formatted and typeset, with table of contents, etc. It's also proofread. It has minimal margins, and 9pt font size ("-ss" stands for small screen), it may be too small for some people, but the source files are available on request if someone wants to try different settings. I also added a "chapterbar" to the top of every page. It has two bars marking the progress on the whole book and on the current chapter, which I hope are unobtrusive and helpful enough. Any kind of feedback is welcome. (Due to the illustrations, the file is above the limit size for PDFs, therefore it's uploaded as ... Source: www.topix.com --- 2 days ago

In the first case to review the government's secret evidence for holding a detainee at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, a federal appeals court found that accusations against a Muslim from western China held for more than six years were based on bare and unverifiable claims. The unclassified parts of the decision were released on Monday. With some derision for the Bush administration's arguments, a three-judge panel said the government contended that its accusations against the detainee should be accepted as true because they had been repeated in at least three secret documents. The court compared that to the absurd declaration of a character in the Lewis Carroll poem "The Hunting of the Snark": "I have said it thrice: What I tell you three times is true." "This comes perilously close to suggesting that whatever the government says must be treated as true," said the panel of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The unanimous panel overturned as invalid a Pentagon determination that the detainee, Huzaifa Parhat, a member of the ethnic Uighur Muslim minority in western China, was properly held as an enemy combatant. ... "The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday - but never jam to-day." "It MUST come sometimes to 'jam to-day,'" Alice objected. "No, it can't," said the Queen. "It's jam every OTHER day: to-day isn't any OTHER day, you know." If the wonderfully wacky world of Lewis Carroll's White Queen held sway, we would never have to make up our minds about what we want to do with the rest of our lives. It would never actually be "to-day." Does that sound tempting? For New Radicals-in-the-making, it can be. (New Radicals are people who've discovered how to put skills acquired in their careers to work on some of the world's greatest challenges; for more, see archived posts.) We've spent time imagining a new and deeply meaningful career for ourselves. One that will make a real difference. It's been thrilling to wander around with our heads full of possibilities, delicious when all the doors are still wide open. At the same time, this stage can be distressing. With so many choices before us and so much uncertainty, some people report feeling anxious and lost. "What will I do? What will I do?" Many of my clients talk about how the stakes are much higher at midlife -- they feel that this is their last chance, or they're reluctant to let go of what's familiar (no matter how unhappy they've been). And pretty much everyone talks about a fear of failure. Happily, "to-day" does eventually arrive. People do make decisions. They put one foot in front of th ...
