You ever feel, you know, not so secure? You could lock yourself in an underground bunker in an undisclosed location without any contact with the outside world, but let’s be honest: who wants to live in North Dakota?* Instead, just make sure you get Apple’s regular Security Updates for a quantum of solace . Newest to the list is Security Update 2008-007 , available in your choice of Leopard Client, Leopard Server, Intel Client, PPC Client, PPC Server, or Universal Server. This martini-swilling patch fixes issues in everything from Apache to Weblog, with fixes in the likes of Finder (where a malicious file on your desktop could apparently lead to a denial of service) and Quick Look (which isn’t too fond of threatening Excel files). The size of the update varies depending on what flavor you need: the Leopard Client update’s a mere 31.4MB while the Universal Server update is a hefty 199MB. They’re available via Apple’s software download page or via Software Update. Just please, please, please refrain from shaking or stirring this update. * My apologies to North Dakotan readers. Please substitute Canada in that joke.* * My apologies to Canadian readers. Please substitute Alaska in that joke.* * You know what, Alaskan readers? I’m standing by that one. We're running Fusion 2.0 on Leopard Server 10.5.5 on XServe 2 x dual core Xeon 2.67 GHz with 8GB RAM. We're hoping to run Exchange 2007sp1 as a virtual machine. We've tested it with Parallels Server with dismal failure. However, I've learned some things and wanted to share and find out if anyone else has experienced any "gotchas". Fusion 2.0 has been promising so far! Parallel's failures was primarily with Windows 2008 - I won't go into details here... Here is Microsoft's announcement on licensing Exchange 2007sp1 to run in virtualized environment: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/08/19/449621.aspx Which has a must read link for recommendations for installing Exchange in a virtualized environment: Exchange 2007 recommendations in virtual environment note it recommends NOT installing on expanding disks so this is something to keep in mind at the onset The only problem we've had so far is getting our XServe's bonded NIC (4 physical NICs) to work in bridged networking mode. The error we get is: The network bridge on device /dev/vmnet0 is not running The virtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network. Virtual device Ethernet0 will start disconnected. The only workaround we've found so far to this is to take out Ethernet1 from our bond, activate it, and move to 1st in service order. This isn't ideal. Other setup details... using 4 virtual procs 4096 MB RAM 3 SCSI virtual disks each ...

The permissions etc would be fine for me, and this is so much simpler than everything else I have tried. But how do you manage this for the one user whose machine is hosting the 'shared' account, if you can't dedicate a machine solely for the purpose? For example, I am thinking at home, with two users and two machines. For the user hosting the account on their machine, surely they will be unable to mount the 'shared' account as a remote Server/sharepoint --and if they can't then they'll only see the Public folder and Drop Box of the account. Have I got this right? I think before Leopard you used to be able to create a Sharepoint on a machine and then set it up so a user on the machine logged into it as if coming from another machine. ...
