I was one of those kids that was always looking to start a business. I started with a Lemonade stand and that was because of a computer program for the Commodore 64 called "Lemonade Stand". I quickly learned that price, quality and location would always win out over just plain price and volume. Later on, I started other businesses and realized that those 3 things carried over. This strategy still is with me today in my real estate career. But what if I didn't have that entrepreneurial drive within me? Could it have been put in me with a single gesture? I believe America is built with people who have a dream of owning businesses and without them no one would have jobs. I do realize that only about 10% of the population has what it takes to be the employer while the other 90% are the types that become employees. Since I was about 18, I decided to help build that desire within kids to become business owners and one of the things I've done was become a teacher with Junior Achievement when I was in college. That only lasted about a year because of conflicts with time. (One day I will go back and do it again, because it was a good experience.) The second thing I did and still do today is when I see a Lemonade stand like the one I had is a kid, is I always stop and always purchase that .25 Lemonade. When I'm done, I tell them that was the best service and the best tasting Lemonade I've ever had and I give them a $5 bill and a business card a ...

Filed under: Food Porn , Recipes , Food Oddities , Europe , Meat When I was a kid, a Hungarian restaurant opened in my neighborhood. As this was the seventies, and my family lived in the culinary wasteland of Northern Virginia, every new eatery was an occasion for celebration. Consequently, the mood was high as my parents took my sisters and I to consume levesek, paprikas, and other delicacies. Unfortunately, my father felt obliged to give me a bite of his appetizer, which involved smooth meaty sausage-ish things. They tasted yummy, but when my father told me where they came from, my appetite evaporated. In the years since, I've often regretted that I didn't take more time to savor the testicle dish that my father saw fit to share with me. The Hungarian joint only stayed open for a few months, and "prairie oysters" are not particularly common in American restaurants. To my knowledge, I haven't eaten any testicles since that evening, although I've long since developed both the taste and the bal...um...the intestinal fortitude necessary to try the dish. With this in mind, I was particularly interested in the World Testicle Cooking Championship, a yearly event that is held in Belgrade, Serbia. Boasting chefs from around the world, the Championship highlights the latest discoveries and advances in testicle cooking. Recently, in fact, Australia caused quite a bit of a stir when it bragged about the culinary charms of kangaroo testicles yet ...

Let's see.  It sucks, but there is a bright side.  OK, give me a minute. Um, I need a few more minutes. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather Brady did not start.  Just trying to find the silver lining.  It is there.  It is there.  I know it is there. Just need to look at it right.  Maybe this other way. OK, got it. The 49ers are now a game that may be interesting. Unless I'm way wrong in 2009 the uncapped year only applies to non-playoff teams.  If they screw up they win for losing. Ditto the draft. Now the complaint about ESPN .  I heard all day yesterday and today about how Brady will miss the season.  Yes, he will.  I can tell you the coin flip you will make will be heads and be "psychic" 50 percent of the time. Um, how could they know before the MRI?  Doctors, I'm told, don't do a diagnosis until they see the MRI.  How did the AP know before the MRI was done? ...

From the Cool Maps Department. And just a really cool idea that I just ran across at The Apollo Daily Digest . The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is encouraging the development of renewable energy by identifying currently and formerly contaminated lands and mining sites that present opportunities for renewable energy development in all 50 states. It's the ultimate lemons to Lemonade plan: taking the country's most wasted, ugly and contaminated sites and building facilities that will bring jobs to local communities and boost a more stable, prosperous clean energy economy. (If you don't already have it, you must install Google Earth on your computer first to access the map, then follow the links here .) Estimating a 30 percent increase in electricity demand by 2030, they're looking at six types of large-scale renewable energy sources: Community wind energy - Wind energy potential with wind power class of 3 or greater. Utility scale wind energy - Wind energy potential with wind power class of 4 or greater. Utility scale Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) - Direct normal resource availability of 6 kWh/m2/day or greater. Utility scale Photovoltaic solar energy (PV) - Direct normal resource availability of 5 kWh/m2/day or greater. Biopower facility - Cumulative biomass resources of 140,000 metric tons/year or greater within 50 miles. Biorefinery facility - Cumulative crop residues of 333,000 metric tons/year or greater within 50 ...

As budget cuts resulted in layoffs this week for four lawyers who have each worked at the Georgia Court of Appeals for well over a decade, at least one member of the group is looking forward to an exciting career change. After walking out the door for the last time at her now-former job on Tuesday, M. Katherine Durant hung out her own shingle on Wednesday, reports the Daily Report. Although she never intended to change jobs, she had daydreamed for years about forming her own appellate practice. "I've seen firsthand the myriad ways that lawyers can bungle an appeal,"… ...

I’ve written on the executive experience canard before. But since GOP operatives insist on pushing this absurd line of reasoning to justify Sarah Palin’s “greater qualification for office than Obama or Biden (or presumably McCain)”, let me offer another frame of reference: Running a Lemonade Stand. To run a Lemonade stand you need to know where to place the stand, how to build a proper stand, how much Lemonade mix to buy, where to find accessible ice, how to keep your water pitcher full, how much to charge, how many cups you need, how to advertise, and how to count. You need to be able to train your kid brother or sister in customer service. Yes, running a Lemonade stand takes a lot of managerial acumen. Successfully pulling it off gives you the experience to run another Lemonade stand, or maybe the beginnings of a kid-run carwash. But does it prepare you to run a full-on convenience store? Can you run a Country Time Lemonade Distribution Company? Well, if you have OTHER qualifications like general business skills, access to large amounts of capital, high school education (and likely college education), a business plan to grow and extend your business, and contacts outside your immediate neighborhood then yes, you could be promoted from running a Lemonade stand to something much greater. But absent those other major qualifications, your “executive experience” running a Lemonade stand does not prepare you for the larger task. The Le ...

On those hot summer days, there is nothing better than a glass of cold Lemonade. That is what the residents of Wharton Nursing Home were counting on when they opened their Lemonade stand Wednesday morning in the lobby of the nursing home. The idea came not only from the fact that Aug. 20 was national Lemonade day, but the continuing efforts of Wharton residents and staff to raise funds for the National Alzheimer’s Association. ...

This is a short compilation of excerpts from the current ESPN analysis of the raiders. After reading the San Fransisco Chronical’s view of the preseason, the part of me that slows to catch a glimpse of car crashes wanted to see more. I did. I’d like to point out that I think the Raiders are a great test of our team. We will know, at the end of the game next Monday, if our changes to our run D are solid or not. The new scheme will be tested by some talented RBs. The Raiders pass D is very talented. Their run D, like ours, had been suspect  (we were both awful) and they did things in the off season that, like us, they are happy with. They will be tested as well by the increasingly amazing arm of Cutler, Royal’s tremendous upside, Clady’s stoutness at LT and a solid, if not yet gifted group of RBs. We will see, of course, if Jackson and Colbert are the additions that we are looking for. Stokely is still one of the league’s best, and our TE’s are top rate. We will see if we have the pieces at the Dline, and if our safeties are up to the challenge on run D. It will be a very interesting contest. The reason that I write about the raiders is two-fold. One, they are a division rival, two games a year, and we have a historic rivalry. Second, I have to admit that I want to see if a team so clearly torn by nearly endless emotional turmoil can step up and be as talented on the field as they are on paper. It’s a car wreck, to be sure: The lack ...

Lemonade sales have helped increase to $15,000 the reward for the capture of the killer of a pet goat in New York, officials said. The goat, Teddy, was found dead with a belt around its neck on a Kings Park farm last month. A second goat, Pinky, is missing from the farm.Fundraising efforts, like that of Annemarie Maag's son, are leading to renewed hope that Teddy's killer will be found, Newsday reported Tuesday.Roy Gross, spokesman for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said Maag, of Kings Park, came to him with news of her son's Lemonade stand. When asked why the kids did such a nice thing, they responded, 'We felt it wasn't right to do what those people did and it made us sad because we love animals,' Gross said. ...
