I finally finished Leisure Suit Larry - Love for sailand I want to share a few thoughts. First of all, the game is great in a manner today I can't use often: while most of the contemporary games are short and easy, this one is long, difficult and, above all, undeniably funny - very funny indeed.... ...

There was always going to be causalities in the merger of behemoths Activision and Vivendi, and one of the first appears to be the Sierra publishing label. Formed in 1979 by Ken (programmer) and Roberta (storyteller) Williams, Sierra On-Line was responsible for many much-loved and pioneering games, including King's Quest, B.C's Quest for Tires, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Police Quest, The Incredible Machine, Caesar, Aces of the Pacific and Gabriel Knight. Games including Phantasmagoria, You Don't Know Jack, IndyCar Racing II, Grand Prix Legends, Half-Life, Homeworld, Metal Arms, Evil Genius, World in Conflict, F.E.A.R and recent Legend of Spyro titles were also published under the Sierra label. Larry creator Al Lowe recently told Edge that Vivendi had "allowed the (Sierra) brand to wither into meaninglessness", while Ken Williams also agrees that it should now be allowed to rest in peace, which Activision Blizzard seems to be doing as it cancels or off-loads various Sierra properties. Today let us hear your memories of one of the longest running publishers in the interactive industry. ...

Regardless of your thoughts on AOL (the company still conjures up many a night of dial-up Internet service for me), it's hard to argue about AIM; by and large it's still the de-facto Instant Messaging network for many. Google Talk is fast becoming a fave of mine, especially with how well it works on the iPhone. Of course, the problem there is that you have to leave the web service up and running all the time since the iPhone doesn't allow apps to run in the background. Windows Mobile has no such limitation so it's worth mentioning that AOL Mobile is offering AIM for WinMo 5 and 6 devices for use in the U.S. Hop your handset over to http://wap.aol.com for an over-the-air download or grab the .CAB right here . Gee, all I need now is a TRS-80 emulator for my iPhone, a copy of Leisure Suit Larry and a few hours of free time and it's back to the eighties... (via Business Hacks ) ...

Click the play button below to hear our song about the Palins and ending the silly, epic sex wars. When you think about all the heavyweights that have taken bullets in the partisan sex wars, it's hard to imagine a peace brokered by a pouty-faced 17-year old Alaskan who as far as we know doesn't speak. Here's hoping. The response to Bristol Palin's pregnancy from the Obama campaign, and anyone else with half a brain, a sprinkle of candor and a dash of decency has been pitch perfect. It really is the family's business. It's not ironic at all that the daughter of a Governor opposed to sex-education and very possibly opposed to contraception has a pregnant daughter (it would be ironic if the daughter of the founder of Trojan got pregnant) and the family's response has been exactly in line with what you would expect of someone with their principles. And sure, abstinence-only education is as much of a joke here as it is a tragedy in Africa, but the Palins have made good on it. I have no idea if Bristol Palin would not be pregnant if she had the pleasure, as I did, of seeing my school nurse with an OTB addiction put a condom on an unlucky banana plucked from the cafeteria. What I do know is that no one went and blamed rap music or Grand Theft Auto II or Leisure Suit Larry (remember?) for it, and that's a step in the right direction. The fact is we should treat every pregnant teenager like she's Bristol Palin. Hate-mongering pols can find ...

As we all know, Activision Blizzard is killing Vivendi Games' Sierra label and all the crappy, and some of the not-so-crappy, games it was publishing (some might even argue it's keeping a few of the Sierra franchses that are crappy, but that's a separate issue). But there was one crappy game that was so close to being publisher, and was literally being manufactured with "Sierra" on the box as the merger happened a few weeks ago, that Activision Blizzard couldn't stop it. And so the final game to go out under the Sierra label is "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," a PS2 and Wii game based on the crappy film of the same title. Do I even have to tell you it's terrible? Sierra, of course, was an awesome publisher back in the '80s, making classic games of my childhood like "King's Quest," "Space Quest," and (when I got a little older) "Leisure Suit Larry." The first time I remember ever laughing at a videogame was definitely a Sierra title. There's a great Wikipedia entry on Sierra that goes from its founding by Ken and Roberta Williams (who made the first ever adventure game with graphics) through its heyday in the '80s to the corporate machinations in the late '90s and early 2000's and eventually being turned into Vivendi Games' label for everything non-Blizzard. You can be excused if you didn't even know Sierra was making a "Mummy" game. There was no PR around the release that I saw. The Sierra website says the game is coming o ...

Filed under: Biz , Adventure , Casual , Opinion Just as you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs, so too is it impossible to merge two gaming juggernauts without losing a few games -- and studios. News that the recent Activision Blizzard conglomerate will see many Sierra titles become casualties is well known at this point, but should the legendary Sierra studio itself be put out to pasture? Though the idea may seem blasphemous, it may not be such a bad thing. In fact, EDGE magazine writer Kris Graft thinks it would be better to remember the studio for its memorable contributions to the industry (especially many PC gamers' favorite adventure titles) rather than be thought of as a shadow of its former self. Such fond memories also seem preferable to Al Lowe, venerable designer of the Leisure Suit Larry series. Lowe feels that the once great development house let Sierra become nothing more than a logo on box fronts. "It was 'Sierra' in name only. They allowed the brand to wither into meaninglessness," lamented Lowe . The article is a great read and recommended for all Sierra enthusiasts, as well as PC gamers as a collective. From this writer's own perspective, I agree with Lowe. Sierra has long been one of my favorite studios, and I'd rather remember it for some of my favorite gaming memories ( King's Quest and Gabriel Knight , I'm lookin' at you!) than a broken, feeble brand that no longer remembers what its name once re ...

Vivendi made it clear back in mid-January that another Leisure Suit Larry game was in development. If the news didn't grab your attention, I can't blame you - Larry's previous outing, Magna Cum Laude was refused classification by the OFLC in September of 2004. Not a point in Box Office Bust 's favour, as I'm sure you'll agree. Despite Magna Cum Laude 's fate, and the fact Box Office Bust has yet to be rated , EB Games Australia has preorders going for the new title. While this isn't unusual - many retailers make unrated games available for preorder - until the OFLC passes judgement, my hopes remain subdued. Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust [EB Games Australia, thanks Michael] ...

looks like Leisure Suit Larry has actually been working hard this off season to improve his game with Tim Grover at hoops the gym in chi-town this summer. now, i know a couple of other bulls have put in some time with Tim over this summer, IE. Deng and Thomas, but it is refreshing to read that Hughes, a guy who says that he just likes to have fun is putting in extra effort. here is the article on hoops they gym. anyway, i think most of the reason that bulls management is not crapping in their collective pants over losing BG has to do with the expectation that Hughes can turn his game around and become the slashing offensive presence that he once was with his former defensive prowess to boot. having watched Hughes in dc during his prime i know what he is capable of, and its definitely next level. anyway, i am going to go out on a limb and say that Larry will have a re-breakthrough season this year and really change the dynamic of the bulls offense for the positive. all you Larry haters, keep hating, but watch out... ...

Jess Beebe has posted a very interesting article at ACG called Resource Quest: hidden treasures in Sierra’s adventure games . It's all about the hidden files of legendary games like King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. These aren't to be confused with Easter Eggs; rather, Jess has found secret stuff lurking in the program directories, such as sketches and background art. In short, this is the stuff the developer probably didn't want anyone to see! If you like Sierra's classic adventure games, check out Jess's article! read more ...
