On Friday, following McCain's announcement that Sarah Palin was his choice for running mate, like way too many others I allowed myself to indulge in the fantasy that this was the stupidest decision of a GOP presidential candidate since Dan Quayle was tapped for the role. Now that my post-DNC sense of invincibility has worn off, however, so has my triumphalism. I woke up yesterday morning with a much different sense of the Sarah Palin choice. I think it's a trap. The McCain campaign knew exactly how both Democrats and the traditional media would respond to the Palin announcement, because it was entirely predictable. Choosing someone this plainly unqualified wasn't a mistake, and it wasn't even a gamble. It was a trade-off. My suspicion is that the McCain campaign doesn't really care that Palin undermines McCain's case for experience, because they're not planning to use that argument anymore. They've decided that the experience argument is ineffective against Obama's change message, and they're more or less giving it up. Moreover, they know how to respond to attacks on Palin's total lack of qualification for the office, and are in fact inviting those attacks as a way to build sympathy with working class independent voters. That's where Palin's value lies. With Sarah Palin breathing new life into an otherwise listless presidential campaign, John McCain has been, pathetically, more than willing to trade roles and let his running mate effectively campaign at the top of the ticket. The approach is simple: leverage the church-going hockey mom's celebrity status to maximize media exposure while minimizing the scrutiny that usually comes with it. The opportunity to keep this approach up will not last forever; pretty soon Palin will have to face the music. When that moment comes, the McCain campaign will carefully ensure that the tune is of their selection, the orchestra is fully vetted, and the conductor is a registered Republican. Here's my prediction for how this plays out: Palin is going to keep up her ruse of 'speaking directly to the American people' for as long as possible. The McCain campaign will revel in the headlines and the photo ops while explaining that Palin is merely showing America that she doesn't need to play by the liberal media's elitist rules. This precarious tactic has a shelf life - my guess is about two to three weeks, maybe less. Eventually, her novelty will wear off a tad, voters (prompted by pundits and journalists) will start showing signs of apprehension that she really hasn't shown any policy expertise or ability to think on her feet, and reporters will get sick of being treated like paparazzi and will just stop covering her. Here's an interesting tidbit about Sarah Palin's home state of Alaska: it's socialist. When pundits refer to Alaska as the 'reddest of red states,' they could as easily be referring to its oligopolistic resource extraction-based economy and its redistributionist state taxation regime as to its electoral tendencies. Eighty percent of Alaska's state government revenues come from just one source, oil. That's just ten percent less than in Saudi Arabia and thirty percent more than in Venezuela. Because of this enormous oil wealth, Alaskans don't pay state-levied income or sales taxes, and have the lowest tax obligations in the country. In fact, Alaska residents are paid out directly from the industry, in the form of annual checks of up to $2,000 from the oil industry-financed "Alaska Permanent Fund." When the Alaskan state government needs more money, legislators don't have to resort to jacking up taxes on working Alaskans, or scrapping social programs, or turning to 'market-based solutions.' They can just raise taxes on the profits of Big Oil, as Sarah Palin did last year (not as bold a move as one might assume, given that record profit-making oil companies in Alaska had just been exposed for bribing legislators) in an effort to attain for the Alaskan people "an equitable share for our resources," and like President Hugo Chavez did in his country a few months ago for much the same reason.
