An anonymous reader writes "A site called LegalTorrents has just launched that hosts trackers and seeds for digital media licensed under the Creative Commons license. ('We distribute content with the full permission of the rights holders and use the peer-2-peer file-sharing technology called Bittorrent.') The site even provides a way to donate money to artists you like. (LegalTorrents takes 15% off the top unless you are a member, which costs $50 one-time during the beta period.)" It's always good to see "legitimate" content distributed in ways that make it hard to demonize the distribution system itself — something Lawrence Lessig in particular has been doing for years, and his book "Free Culture" is one of the audiobooks available through LegalTorrents. This is a new plugin for the Rails Community that provides a customizable framework for cataloging and publishing user activity and social objects. We currently aim to provide support for microformats in HTML , Atom feeds, and compatibility with the open source DISO social networking implementation for activity discovery and consumption. The barrier between legal and illegal Torrents platforms is sometimes hard to draw. However, this distinction is very clear on the   LegalTorrents website which, as its name indicates, only offers free legal torrents. On the occasion upon a new release of the Website, Slyck has taken a look at this topic by studying its content and how it works. Indeed LegalTorrents offers various types of classical torrents (movies, musics, books, video-games...) but it differentiates itself because its content, which was initially under copyright, can now be freely and legally distributed thanks to Creative Commons licenses. Moreover it is the first website to have associated RSS feeds to the BitTorrent protocol. But the significant new feature of this Website is its social development. Indeed the latest release of LegalTorrents was accompanied with a Facebook app which enables users to share links with their friends in order to widen the community of legal torrents and to make people aware of the various Creative Commons possibilities. So we can salute these efforts to develop a social and legal Torrents platform and we hope that others will follow the same path. ...

La barrière entre le légal et l'illégal est parfois difficile à cerner sur les plate-formes de distribution de torrents. Cette distinction est néanmoins très claire sur le site LegalTorrents qui, comme son nom l'indique, ne propose que des torrents légaux et gratuits. A l'occasion de la sortie d'une nouvelle version de ce site Internet, Slyck s'est penché sur la question en étudiant son fonctionnement ainsi que son contenu. En effet, LegalTorrents propose différents types de torrents classiques (films, musique, livres, jeux-vidéo...), mais il se différencie des autres car ses contenus, qui à l'origine étaient soumis à des copyright, peuvent être distribués gratuitement et légalement grâce aux licences Creative Commons . Par ailleurs, c'est le premier site de torrents à avoir associé les flux RSS au protocole BitTorrent. Mais le caractère nouveau de ce site est son développement vers le communautaire. En effet, la nouvelle version de LegalTorrents s'est accompagnée d'une application Facebook qui permet aux utilisateurs de partager des liens de fichiers avec leurs amis afin d'agrandir la portée des torrents légaux, et de faire connaître l'ampleur des possibilités de Creative Commons. Nous pouvons donc saluer ces efforts de développement d'une plate-forme de torrents communautaire et légale, et espérer que d'autres suivront le même chemin. ...
