For readers who don't know, Lawrence Dennis was an odd cat and one of the country's foremost advocates for American fascism. I didn't spend a lot of time on him in the book, though I spent too long reading his stuff. Still I think I could have profitably included him in a whole chapter on American advocates of fascism. Most advocates of American fascism had a heavy dose of crankery to them. But it's still interesting stuff. If you google around you can find quite a bit of his writing. Anyway, this reader has been probing his book fruitfully, this time in response to this post. From my Old Whig reader: Lawrence Dennis, a leader of Progressive opposition to the New Deal and himself a proponent of fascism in America, apparently deemed differences in the use of force and coercion between our traditional American constitutional liberalism and fascism to be de minimis, that is, akin perhaps to rush hour overcrowding in a subway or elevator with the benefits far surpassing the inconveniences, once the people habituated themselves to the new régime: "The right formula, or the ideal balance between repression and tolerance, can best be sought if the mind is freed of liberal norms, or impossible and nearly meaningless verbalisms, such as free speech, free press, freedom of conscience, and so forth, and if an attempt is made quite simply to determine the minimum of governmental repression compatible with safety for a given plan in a given s ...

2008/07/13 My wife's father suffered a stroke several years back and has been in nursing homes since then. He's wheelchair bound, mostly aphasic, obviously depressed.. a very sad and unhappy man. We visit him every Saturday to give him what comfort we can, spending hours talking to him, wheeling him here and there to give him some different scenery.. it's not much, but we hope it gives him some relief. Someone from the family visits each day, so he's never alone for long. He does seem to enjoy music. Another family member had brought in a CD player and we'd play that for him when it wouldn't disturb other residents. But the CD player had to be plugged in too, so recently I bought him an iPod Shuffle (second generation). The Shuffle has no screen; it plays its songs either randomly or sequentially. That's fine for him: he wouldn't be able to select songs anyway. As it holds 500 songs, a random selection should keep him amused without repetition, and the 12 hour play time for a full charge means that he can have it playing the entire four hours or so we spend with him. As these things are very inexpensive ($49.95), other family members could buy one, load theirs up with a different set of songs he enjoys, and he'd then have music a good part of every day.. I did have a little trouble with this. When you first connect it to iTunes, a window comes up with the choice "Register Later" or "Continue". I chose "Continue", but nothing happened ... 2008/07/11 I recently wrote about a new poker site that pays cash prizes . It's a good place to play because of the serious competition, but if you looked at it from a strictly financial objective, they only offer one game that pays enough to be worthwhile: the $5,000.00 Sunday game that pays $1500.00 for first place. Anything else just has too little money in it to be worth spending time on (assuming that your only interest in playing is the money). Former Missouri guard Keon Lawrence was slightly more talkative to the New Jersey press than he was to us after he announced he was dumping the Tigers so he could transfer to Seton Hall. "I just felt (Seton Hall) is a better situation for me," Lawrence told the Newark Star-Ledger . "I get to play in front of family, friends and fans." So, why didn't Lawrence just stay at home out Keon Lawrence of high school and go to Seton Hall? "I was trying to get away from home at that time," Lawrence said. "I felt I needed to grow up. Now it's time to come back." Got it. Lawrence, by the way, will have to sit out the 2008-09 season and then will have two seasons of eligibility left.
