I'm back in Iceland, and although it might seem strange if you are familiar with my previous adventure here in the dead of winter I'm happy to report that July is definitely a better month for visiting than December. No howling winds or pounding rain. Fleece is still the garment of choice but the sun never goes down. I'm here at an annual cradle to cradle conference (well more like a gathering) with eco architect Bill McDonough who first came to Iceland with Benny Goodman thirty five years ago. (Bill put himself through architecture school working as Goodman's chauffeur and the two became good friends.) McDonough is now the leading authority on cradle-to-cradle design in which there is no end to a product's usefulness, everything is continually recycled, eliminating the concept of waste entirely. The conference schedule in Iceland sure takes some getting used to. Salmon fly fishing by day, lunch at three, dinner at ten, discussion begins at eleven...pm! Ideas really sound good around then. You don't know what a long summer day is until you've spent one in Iceland! Hitting the hay at three in the morning requires an eye mask and heavy drapes. The most impressive fact about Iceland is that they went from a completely fossil fuel dependent nation to a completely coal independent nation. Not a single chunk of coal is burned for electricity there. Instead, they power their booming economy with renewable geothermal and hydropower (and th ...

2008-08-04 ANTI-WAR PROTESTERS TARGET BUSH IN MAINE By David Sharp / Associated Press KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine â The scene played out Saturday for what could be the last time: a sitting president visited Walker's Point, tourists held out hope of getting a glimpse of the president, and a group of noisy protesters paraded through the heart of town. President Bush kept a low profile as 50 to 60 anti-war demonstrators marched to a police checkpoint less than a half-mile from his parents' seaside home. The group chanted "Hands off Iran!" and "Jail to the Chief!" as tourists in this seaside community paused to gawk. Within sight of Walker's Point, peace activist Laurie Dobson called for a moment of silence "for all the people this man has killed in his two terms in office." Then Carlos Arredondo spoke of the loss of his son, Marine Lance Cpl. Alexander Arredondo, who was killed in Iraq on Aug. 25, 2004. Then the group turned away. For his part, Bush was making preparations for a wedding. A white tent was set up on the Walker's Point property for the reception for two White House staffers, one of them a distant Bush cousin. Offshore, a Coast Guard cutter and several smaller patrol boats stood watch. The number of demonstrators who set out on the 2-mile march under overcast skies was far fewer than the 1,700 who gathered last summer when Bush met with Russia's Vladimir Putin. The noisy march was organized by the Kennebunks Peace Department and co ... Source: www.worldwidewords.org --- 3 days ago
• David Coe forwarded an alarming headline from his local newspaper, the Herald-Tribune , Sarasota, Florida: “Simms to get shot tonight”. It referred to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback Chris Simms, set to play for the first time in a year following an injury. • Following up the item last week on the advertisement offering an unused and delusted wedding gown, Paul Witheridge remarked, “This brings to mind the advert: ‘Parachute for sale. Never opened. Used once. Small stain.’” A not dissimilar advertisement was spotted by Padmavyuha on the North Devon Freecycle site: “Bag of cat litter. Used once.” They’re frugal in North Devon. • Laurie Camion saw this in the Lancashire Evening Post of 12 August: “The man, who wore a Keffiyah type Arab headdress concealing his identity, pulled a 12 inch Samurai from his tracksuit bottoms and pointed it at the shopkeeper’s face.” They’re making Japanese warriors small this year. • The ABC TV news in Perth last Sunday reported the closing of the historic Astor Cinema: “Less than 30 people filled the grand 700-seat venue.” Ted Witham comments that even in the current obesity epidemic that was a remarkable feat. • On a Belgian skydiving site, Elsi Dodge found another example of why one shouldn’t use automated translation programs: “Our mission is to promote actively this sensational sport at ... companies which want incinerate their customers and employees in an original manner.” • Laurence Horn ... If you're in New York anytime between now and, oh, January 9, you might want to check out the Museum of Modern Art's new exhibit, opened today, called "Looking at Music." Its focus is the mid-'60s through the mid-'70s—no surprise there—but the lineup of art-into-pop types (Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Steve Reich, Joan Jonas, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, John Cage, Jack Smith, and Ray Johnson) and the variety of works on display make this look pretty scrumptious. Not to mention a killer lineup of movie screenings to accompany the exhibit. [ MoMA ] (HT: Kate Silver ) ... Source: www.propublica.org --- 35 days ago

The senior men delivered three wins on the Sunday of Marlow – in Elite eights , Senior 2 coxless fours and Senior 4 singles . The junior men were also in attendance, racing in the Saturday quads events. A borrowed boat and a hitherto untried line-up didn't seem to inhibit James, Jonathan, Luke and Thomas, who won their heat and then came second in the final of J16 quads. Given that three of the crew are J15s, and that in their wake were the Tiffin quad who won J16 quads at the National Junior Sculling Head, this was a very satisfying result. The Sch/Junior quad of Edwin, Laurie, Tom and David had a tougher time. Their event had quality overseas entries here for Henley and crews going for GB colours, and a week disrupted by exams didn't help. Any other heat and they would have got into the repechage, but sadly fourth wasn't quite enough. ... Source: xfruits.com --- 13 days ago
