Considering that you're reading this right now, it's a fair bet that you like talking about music. Chances are you're even interested in hearing the musicians you like talk about music. Thus, you'd probably like to know that San Francisco non-profit City Arts & Lectures has enlisted good folks from around the music world for a series of conversations and performances it calls "Talking Music" . The list of music-makers taking part in the series over the next several months includes John Darnielle (the Mountain Goats), Neko Case (herself/the New Pornographers), Will Sheff (Okkervil River), Stephin Merritt (the Magnetic Fields) and Laurie Anderson. Each of these "Talking Music" events feature the musicians "in conversation and song" alongside a literary light acting as host. Merritt has been paired up with his Gothic Archies partner Daniel Handler (who also writes the Lemony Snicket books), while Laurie Anderson is "in conversation" only (no music) with Our Band Could Be Your Life scribe Michael Azerrad. When it comes to career retrospectives, mere Best Of or Greatest Hits collections will suffice for some artists, but not for Philip Glass . Instead, the minimalist pioneer gets his very own Glass Box: A Nonesuch Retrospective , a 10-disc set showcasing material from his body of operas, symphonies, chamber compositions, film scores, collaborations, and other pieces.   Glass Box comes out via Nonesuch on September 23, but of course, it's no mere box set. In addition to the 10 CDs, there is a 191-page booklet with photos, texts, a composer's note, and liner notes from friends and admirers including David Byrne, Paul Simon, Laurie Anderson, director Errol Morris, artist Chuck Close, and Kronos Quartet founder David Harrington, among others. All of this comes packaged in a cube with each of five of its sides featuring an image of Glass by one of the following artists: Robert Mapplethorpe, Annie Leibovitz, Chuck Close, Robert Wilson, and Francesco Clemente.
