Here comes another wrinkle in what's been a rough year for Rep. Laura Richardson , the Democrat who, though she represents the 37th Congressional District in Long Beach, made more news for defaulting on home loans , leasing a pricey car at tax payer's expense, and getting a sweet deal from the bank that holds her mortgage. The Republicans, who gave up on Richardson's district, where 60 % of voters are registered as Democrats, now have a write-in candidate. The Press-Telegram reports: June Pouesi, a political unknown from Carson, entered the race Sept. 19 as a GOP write-in candidate in a district that is 60 percent Democratic and 18 percent Republican. If she had run in the primaries, her name would be on the Nov. 4 ballot with Richardson and independent Nick Dibs, but she did not consider running until she got a mailing from another write-in candidate, Democrat Peter Mathews, in August. She figured if Mathews could run a pencil-me-in candidacy for the district that includes most of Long Beach, Signal Hill, Carson and Compton, she could, too. "I told my husband, and we prayed about it," she said. "This is basically going on faith, stepping out of my comfort zone on faith." Pouesi's political resume is fairly light -- she's the director of the Office of Samoan Affairs in Carson, and ran for Carson City Council in 1984, but lost. After raising her family, she now hears the call to service again. Considering the meteoric rise of Repu ...

U.S. Rep. Laura Richardson can't plead ignorance as the root of her now-famous real estate woes, which include a foreclosure and unpaid taxes in Sacramento, and defaults in both Long Beach and San Pedro. Turns out Richardson was, at one time in her life, a Realtor. Here's the story from the Press-Telegram:The congresswoman was permitted to sell property in California from Dec. 16, 1998, to Dec. 15, 2002, state Department of Real Estate records show. In the late 1990s, Richardson worked for short periods of time at Action Century 21, 3626 E. Pacific Coast Highway, and Prudential California Realty (now Coldwell Banker), 1650 Ximeno Ave., agents at both offices say. A spokesman for Richardson says she never took part in any real estate transactions. "Congresswoman Richardson has never utilized the license in any state," says aide William Marshall. "She has never listed or sold any property in any capacity for herself or anyone else." The reporter couldn't find any records of sales by Richardson, a Long Beach Democrat. When her license expired, Richardson didn't renew it. You can read the full story here. --Veronique de Turenne Photo: AP ...

Rep. Laura Richardson, best known in recent months for her very public defaults on several homes she owns in California, is getting back her Sacramento house, the Press-Telegram reports:The broker who bought Rep. Laura Richardson's Sacramento house at a foreclosure auction two months ago has dropped his lawsuit against her and her bank, allowing Richardson to reclaim the home. In a statement, Richardson's lender, Washington Mutual, said the litigation had been "resolved," but that the terms are confidential. The broker, James York, also declined to discuss the matter. "I'm not supposed to say anything," he said. "I think you guys can figure out what happened. I only make business decisions and nothing else." (skip)At the time of the foreclosure sale, Richardson owed $578,354.52 on the home, which she had purchased in January 2007 for $535,000. York bought the house on the courthouse steps for $388,000 - sticking Washington Mutual with a loss of $190,000.Just how long do you think the terms of the deal that gave Richardson back her house can stay secret? And would WaMu do the same for you? The full story from the Press-Telegram is here. --Veronique de Turenne Photo: AP ...

Yes, the "Name That Party" exercise is getting old. But somebody has to do it, or 10-20 years from now we'll have people searching the web and concluding that only Republicans had ethical problems during the 21st Century's first decade. The latest example of convenient party omission also involves a couple of other items that bear mentioning. The story concerns the now somewhat well-known Laura Richardson (D-CA). It is at the LA Times's "L.A. Now" blog , in a Monday post by Jesus Sanchez: Laura Richardson's driving for dollars She may have defaulted on mortgages and lost a home in foreclosure, but that hasn't stopped Long Beach Rep. Laura Richardson from driving in style and at great expense, courtesy of the taxpayer. The lease on Richardson's 2007 Lincoln Town Car costs about $1,300 a month -- the most expensive lease of any member of the House of Representatives, reports the Daily Breeze . Richardson's monthly lease, paid by the federal government, is much larger than the $400 to $800 a month that other House members pay, according to a taxpayer group. The underlying Daily Breeze story identified Richardson as a Democrat in its third paragraph, and had other additional tidbits, including these: A protege of Rep. Maxine Waters - she calls Waters "Big Mama" and herself "Little Mama" - Richardson has worked to cultivate an image of success since arriving in Congress last fall. That effort evidently included a major upgrade of her p ...

President Bush signs the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington after the House passed the $700 billion financial bailout bill, Friday, Oct. 3, 2008. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak) The House voted Monday and didn't pass the bailout , but today was another day. Most Los Angeles area representatives didn't change their vote from Monday, but four democrats went from a no vote to a yes vote, ultimately helping the bailout plan pass today and sending the bill over to President Bush to sign it into law. Those who had a change of heart were Adam Schiff from Pasadena/SGV, Hilda Solis of El Monte/East LA, Diane Watson of Los Angeles, and Joe Baca of San Bernardino all switched from No to Yes today.
