Power adapters are one of those things that mobile workers get very picky about. The size of the power brick means a great deal when packing a gear bag. Fortunately, both the Lenovo X200 and the Dell Latitude XT both have pretty small adapters and should appeal to the gear-packing folk among us. In addition to their small size, both adapters feature wrap straps to help keep the cords neat and tidy. Both adapters are exactly the same length in cord size. All of that said, I do have to give it up to Dell for their 45 watt slim-line adapter – that is one sweet and thin adapter. XT adapter foreground, X200 background XT adapter foreground, X200 background Here is a comparison with the Lenovo slim adapter , which is certainly thin, but not small by any means. The slim adapter is also not included as the standard power adapter in the X200. I’ve been living vicariously through Warner and his awesome Lenovo X200 Tablet PC reporting – man, he has done a fantastic job reporting on the X200 , comparing it to the HP 2730p, and more. I believe a full X200 review is just about ready to get published, so stay tuned. Fortunately, I no longer have to rely on Warner’s reporting – Lenovo just sent me a X200 Tablet to evaluate and I’m going to be doing just that over the next 90 days: giving my own impressions of the new design, the ultra-base, and also comparing it to the Dell Latitude XT. Unfortunately, I don’t have the touch unit, so I won’t be able to do any touch comparisons. I’m sure they will send one when those units are ready. Meanwhile, I have to say: as much as I enjoy using the Latitude XT, there is nothing like a ThinkPad keyboard and trackstick. As soon as I started typing on the X200, my fingers felt right at home. The flush bezel is also a major improvement in usability for the tablet pc user. I should also point out that Lenovo really outdid themselves on the new X200 ultrabase. Not only can the ultrabase charge the extended battery while plugged in to the tablet pc (which the Latitude XT docking station cannot do), but the new ultrabase also has a charging port that will charge an additional battery – that capability allows you to charge two extended batteries at the same time – that is a HUGE benefit to the mobile worker. Here is a picture of the charging port ...

Many of our readers have asked for head to head comparison photos between the Lenovo X200 Tablet PC and Dell’s Latitude XT Tablet PC . Here is the first set of comparisons. I’ll post pictures of the docking stations next, as well as some benchmarks and battery life comparisons later next week. Some notes: X200 is noticeably thicker than the XT, and feels slightly heavier ( although I have not put them on a scale to verify this ). This is mostly due to the screen thickness on the X200. It is worth noting that the X200 has an 8 cell battery hanging off the back, while the XT has a 6 cell integrated into the case. The X200 has a flush bezel, while the XT does not. There is a parallax difference between the X200 and the XT. When inking on the screen, the pen tip feels closer to the cursor on the XT than on the X200. This is because Lenovo went with a flush screen, thus increasing the parallax. It is noticeable, but not a problem in my opinion. The keyboard and trackstick is much nicer to use on the X200 than on the XT . I don’t miss the touchpad at all. There is a lot more wristpad room on the XT than on the X200. However, the smaller wristpad space isn’t too noticeable while typing. Inking feels more natural and fluid on the X200 than on the XT – this is pure subjective, though. At full brightness, the XT seems a bit richer in colors and less washed out than the X200. However, both LED displays are crisp and bright. I can already tell I’ ...

Dell has announced that the company will provide drivers for those Latitude XP users to enable multi-touch aka touchscreen technology for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Dell is stating that users will not have to wait for Windows 7 to be released to take advantage of using your pinkies to operate the system. In addition Dell also states: Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer highlighted upcoming multi-touch capability that Windows 7 will bring. Chris Flore’s post and video kicked off a flurry of conversations in Techmeme, and we were pumped that they used a Latitude XT was one of the machines Microsoft used show off multi-touch in Windows 7. But, Latitude XT customers don’t have to wait for Windows 7 to use multi-touch. Tomorrow we will introduce a software update globally via support.dell.com for the Dell tablet that will bring multi-touch to both Windows XP and Vista. With this update, customers can use the functionality in several standard apps like Google Earth, Outlook and Microsoft Office, web browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer 7, and XP’s Windows Picture viewer and the Vista’s Windows Photo Gallery. Wide angle viewing attributes are a plus for flat screen TV's, but sometimes the opposite can be said for laptop computers, especially for road warriors working on planes and trains who might prefer that the information they are viewing isn't visible to the person sitting next to them. Multitouch isn’t a total stranger to notebooks - Dell’s Latitude XT shipped with a capacitive touchscreen that, in July, got a firmware update to enable pinch-zooming and other gestures, while Synaptics’ latest touchpads have multitouch-style gestures - but it’s been a harder sell than in, say, Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch. Windows 7 will ship with support for multitouch, but manufacturers are more cautious ; according to a Fujitsu spokesperson, touch-sensitivity on a notebook “is not intuitive”. “You don’t see a lot of touchscreen notebooks because it is not intuitive to reach up and start touching the screen when there is a good keypad” Paul Moore, senior director product management, Fujitsu Perhaps what Moore should have said is that it’s not intuitive unless there’s a good reason for it. While multitouch makes sense on a handheld mobile device, primarily because the space for alternative interfaces is much reduced, users are far more used to their laptops being intended for a lap or desk and thus having space for a variety of more traditional input methods. Give them a real, distinctive application for multitouch, however, and analysts believe consumers will be quicker to demand the functionality. “I don’t think there’s inherently anything great about multitouch unless it is mapped to a functionality. Multitouch on notebooks would be a lot more interesting if manufacturers identified the top five things that are arduous to do ...

I just installed the new update from Dell giving multi-touch to the Latitude XT Tablet PC. Checkout the quick video below on how it works. Dell and N-Trig have some work to do to make the experience more fluid. As you'll see in the video, the multi-touch operations sometimes gets confused with Vista's gestures ( going up, back, etc ), as well as links / pictures accidentally getting clicked. Zooming is not very smooth, either. This is just the beginning, folks. Thanks to Dell and N-Trig, multi-touch on the screen is finally here - now we just gotta get developers writing apps for it and get the experience working more naturally! In a previous post , I detailed my plan to purchase and use a Tablet PC exclusively, blogging about my observations and experiences over the course of two weeks. I discussed reasons why the tablet has struggled to reach the mainstream, my lack of interaction with the tablet platform, and shared the areas that I would be using a tablet in my daily computing tasks. My goal was not only finding a tablet that would bring greater mobility and productivity but also finding a tablet that wouldn't break the bank. As a strong supporter of buying refurbished computers , I decided to search the outlets and eBay for the right machine. The following factors were strongly considered when searching for a tablet: Battery life: I wanted something with 4.5+ hours of battery life. Weight: 4lbs or under. Active digitizer. 12" screen After doing a little research and talking with a few Tablet MVPs, I narrowed my choice to four tablets: The Lenovo X61 is an excellent machine that exceeded all criteria, but it was ultimately priced higher than I was willing to pay. The cheapest refurbished models were just over a thousand dollars. The Dell Latitude XT is another fantastic tablet that exceeded my criteria. There are fantastic deals at the Dell Outlet , especially with promotional codes that you can find via Twitter for even greater savings. Had I not won the eBay option for the HP2710p, I would've most likely purchased a Dell XT. The Fujitsu T2010 was a ...

Since I'm not fortunate enough to have a Lenovo X200 Tablet PC, I'm living vicariously through Warner's InkShow and upcoming articles . He is one lucky fella. That said, as I've looked at the specs, new features, and changes the X200 Tablet is bringing to the table, I wanted to share my initial impressions on some of the changes they made: Change in pen location: As I shared earlier, I prefer a pen location on the upper left, so that it is accessible with my right hand when in portrait mode. With the old location of lower left, the pen location was actually quite awkward when in portrait mode, forcing your right hand to move across the tablet to the left hand side to take it out. With the location change, at least the pen is much easier to access with your right hand. Loss of NavDial: This is a big deal to me. I use scrolling a lot. It was one of my biggest complaints about the HP 2710p, and I was very happy to see HP listen to customers and add it back in the 2730p. I find it quite ironic that HP would add a scroll wheel to the new 2730p, while Lenovo took it away in the X200. I can't tell you how often I use the scroll wheel in the Latitude XT. To me, the scroll functionality is one of the unique things of a tablet that make it more personable and usable while in portrait mode. I have a feeling Lenovo will be hearing more on this one. Less bezel: I was very pleased to see Lenovo remove a lot of the bezel in their non-touch pane ...

It doesn't take me long to figure out whether I'll like a particular tablet pc or mobile pc. I've developed this mental list of things that are personal to me, and when an OEM hits them, I'll usually reciprocate by using their product: I like track sticks, but I don't like them to stick too high above the keyboard. I find it easier to type and navigate the mouse, rather than having to go back and forth between a trackpad and the keyboard. Lenovo's Thinkpad track sticks are the best I've ever used. I like quiet mouse buttons. There are too many mobile pcs and tablet pcs out nowadays with loud clickity-clackity buttons. What's up with that? I like screens that are flush with the bezel. This is a small detail that means so much to a tablet pc user I like multi-card reader slots. I hate messing with cables when moving pictures from my camera to the tablet pc I like manual volume controls that are accessible when in tablet mode, like those featured on Toshiba's M200 / M700 Tablet PC I like extended batteries that can be charged in the docking station - kudos to HP and their 2710p / 2730p design, and to Lenovo and their X61. I'm frustrated that Dell's Latitude XT extended battery can't be charged while docked. I like fingerprint readers that are on the screen rather than on the palm rest I like scroll buttons that reside on the side of tablet because they are natural to use when in portrait mode. I was very pleased to see HP add the si ...
