I was by myself the other day when I stopped in for lunch at SerenTori restaurant, 5748 34 th Ave., Minneapolis, so I could only try one dish, which made it kind of a tough choice. The $6.95 lunch specials didn't sound that appealing - they're mostly Chinese take-out classics like Sesame Chicken, Egg Foo Young, and Mongolian Beef (all come with fried rice and choice of egg roll or cream cheese wonton). read more ...

“Less is more” is a motto for minimalist philosophy, but when you get less for your dollar, then that would not work very well. I was surprised to learn that with fuel and delivery costs rising, food manufacturers are faced with raising their prices or giving you less, and it seems that less is the [...] ...

Strangers talk to one another here, [...] ...

The May issue of Gourmet magazine was all about cooking schools around the world. One of the schools was in Laos, and the blurb about it said that Laotian food can be distinguished from Thai food by its heavier use of herbs, and its more bitter, less sweet profile. I knew I had tasted dishes [...] ...

The crude graffiti revealed itself more than a week ago in Granite Bay, an upscale Placer County community known for its showcase homes and residents who are not only well-heeled but well-behaved. Heather Manning of Lincoln buys strawberries Sunday in Granite Bay from Saeng Zeux, a Laotian immigrant apparently targeted by racist graffiti that is being investigated as a possible hate crime. Some community residents responded to the graffiti with their own signs. ...

An investigation continues as to who killed a Laotian man from Minnesota whose skeletal remains were found earlier this year in an eastern Newton County field. Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said Ger Lee’s girlfriend is not being entirely upfront with officials. “The girlfriend, the mother of their two children, is telling us somebody came to the house and he went off with them, but she didn’t see who it was,” Copeland said. Meanwhile, the department has talked with a Missouri Department of Conservation agent, who checked on some people near Lee’s car, which was found abandoned near the Talbot Conservation Area in Lawrence County. “The conservation agent checked people who were near the car,” Copeland said. “That’s who we’re trying to locate. They’re friends of the girlfriend. She’s not telling us the entire truth.” Lee was last seen leaving Cassville on Jan. 10. On Feb. 21, a cousin of Lee’s, who lives in Cassville, reported the man missing after relatives in Minnesota said he never returned to St. Paul. The sheriff’s department released photographs of a necklace found among the remains. The gold-toned necklace contained a large pendant determined to be Buddhist in origin with an inscription believed to be in a Laotian dialect. Relatives saw news reports and photos of the necklace, and identified it as belonging to Lee. Dental records confirmed the identity. Lee’s remains were found in a field about 20 feet off of Raven Road i ...

WASHINGTON - Lawmakers called on the State Department Friday to persuade the Thai government to stop forcibly returning Hmong refugees to their homeland.. Twenty-one House members, including Wisconsin Republican Tom Petri and Democrats Tammy Baldwin, Steve Kagen, Ron Kind and Gwen Moore, sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice outlining their concerns about 6,000 Hmong refugees in a Petchabun, Thailand, camp. In June, the Thai government sent 800 Hmong refugees who fled persecution in Laos back to their home country. The lawmakers said it is imperative that the forced removals be stopped and that the Thai government give the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees access to the Hmong. They argued that the United States has an obligation to aid the Hmong who were U.S. allies during the Vietnam conflict. That assistance earned the minority ethnic group the enmity of the Communist government now in Laos. Thousands of Hmong fled Southeast Asia for the United States after the war. Wisconsin has the nations largest Hmong population. House members were not the only ones calling for action Friday. Several human rights organizations and Laotian and Hmong groups met in Washington and condemned the Laotian government for its treatment of Laotian dissidents and Hmong. OPEN MIC NIGHT : It's been a while since Seattlest has gone out to Ballard for the Scratching Post Open Mic at Mr. Spot's Chaihouse, but it was always a nice, even blend of really talented folks singing and reading (and, of course, the usual occasional acts that make you wonder why you torture yourself at an open mic if you're not performing). Plus, it's free, they have beer and wine, and the best chai in town, that side of Traveler's. 7:30 p.m. sign-up, 8 p.m. show // Mr. Spots Chaihouse // Free INSPIRATIONAL : We love stories like this, because they make our girly, Cancerian ass cry, they're so inspiring. Photojournalist Alison Wright was so critically injured in a Laotian bus accident that they weren't even sure she'd live. But, she did, and she climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, and wrote a book about it. Tonight is your night, then, at Northwest Film Forum. They hold a Film Saloon regularly to discuss topics important to films and filmmakers. Tonight, the topic is "Adaptations and Revisions," or what cinema has done to adapt other artforms for the screen. This sounds incredibly fascinating to us, but we will be otherwise detained tonight. We would appreciate it if someone went, though, and took notes for us, because it's informatio ...
