Gary Sutter, of Navarre, and Ron Ruffner, of Louisville, have it down pat. They place their lawn chairs somewhere near the fifth row during the Summer Concert Series in downtown Massillon; head over to Smiley’s to get a bite to eat; and arrive back to the makeshift concert area on Lincoln Way East. During the first edition of the series – a scheduled performance two weeks ago by Little Anthony and the Imperials – the rain poured its misery on the crowd leaving them to search for drier surroundings. For Sutter and Ruffner, it was under the canopy at Grand Mill Centre. And two weeks later while waiting for ’50s and ’60s rock revue, The Van-Dells, they found themselves under the same canopy. Late Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued severe a thunderstorm warning that was followed by reports of hailstorms and strong winds across Western Stark County. The dark clouds did not have mercy on the crowd before the show, but Sutter was holding out hope. “It ain’t over until the fat Lady sings,” Sutter joked about the rain letting up. Unfortunately, it kept on strong and the series experienced its second cancellation due to inclement weather. “What can you do?” Ruffner said. “You can’t do anything when Mother Nature doesn’t want to cooperate with you.” As Massillon police were politely asking folks to pack their lawn chairs, Ralph Willhelm and his family were taking shelter under the marquee at the Lions Lincoln Theatre. “ ...

The Wellsville girls track and field team has had a record-breaking season and it ended in style, by shattering a school record — again — but both of the Lions’ teams missed out on the New York state championships. The Lady Lions’ 3,200-meter relay of Hailey Brown, Emily Graham, Kerry Kane and Laura Sweeney broke the school record by 12 seconds, running 9:40.62, but fell to Wayland-Cohocton, who ran 9:35.32. The record the foursome broke was one they set less than a month ago at the Super 8s meet in Salamanca. Hailey Brown also set a school record, breaking her own mark also set at Super 8s, running 10:54.11 at Friday’s state qualifiers at Marion High School, besting her mark of 10:56.27 set in Salamanca. “Both ran very well considering the conditions,” said Wellsville girls track coach Chris Brown, noting the extreme heat. “A lot of people ran very well despite the conditions.” However, despite multiple top-five performances for both the girls and the boys, nobody from the Allegany County schools qualified for states. Other notable Lady Lions included Ashley Dunham’s fourth-place finish in the pentathlon (2,258 points), Mariam Vonderheide’s third-place mark in the 400 hurdles (1:07.57) and Cortni Monroe’s 16.97 run in the 100 hurdles, setting a personal best. “It’s almost like the Super 8 meet,” coach Brown said. “To get this far is quite a distinction. You’ve got to be the best of the best in Section V to get to this meet. So ju ...

The Barça striker was on the Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV-television, Wednesday, June 4 night, to tender his apology to the journalist of Radio Television Siantou, RTS, in Yaoundé, Philippe Boney, that he (Eto’o) assaulted at the beginning of a press conference at the Hilton Hotel, Yaounde that never actually held on Friday, May 31. The aborted press conference was suppose to take place as a prelude to the Lions’ Africa Cup of Nations, ACN, and World Cup 2010 opener against the Tubaroes Azuis of Cape Verde. However, the match took place despite the Friday incident at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde, with the Indomitable Lions opening their dual campaigns on a good note, trashing the visitors from the country of Lady singer without shoes, Cesaria Evora 2- 0. Eto’o expressed regrets for his action, while noting that he and some other players in the Cameroon national team are victims of manipulation from some persons he described as elderly players who are in the team and some who have been there and left. In an earlier in-house meeting before the CRTV stop-over with the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Thierry Augustin Edjoa, Cameroon’s Roving Ambassador, Albert Roger Milla, the President of the African Athletic Confederation, Col. Kalkaba Malboum and Philippe Boney, Eto’o promised such misdemeanour will never happen again and called on Boney to put the unfortunate event behind him. Boney promised to do same, whil ...

What is it about fox attacks that seem almost funny, when they should be downright scary? Is it because foxes are smaller and cuter than say, mountain Lions or bears? We can't help but notice that we've noted a number of rabid fox attacks in the region over the last few years. There was the one in Herndon in 2004 , the one just last month in Arlington , and now NBC4 reports that another rabid fox has been captured in Gaithersburg . A Gaithersburg woman called animal control on Sunday after a rabid fox chased her and her dogs while they were on a walk. The woman was walking near Green Park on Bickerstaff Way on Sunday morning when she came upon a fox in a storm drain. The fox chased after the woman and followed her for about 50 yards before it fell into a grassy area. That must have been terrifying. And yet, I'm practically giggling. Is it because I didn't grow up in a region that had foxes (I grew up in southern Arizona)? Is it because fox is also a word used to describe a sexy Lady? Am I just a bad person? Help me figure this one out. ...
