In Ear Park , the new album by Department of Eagles , comes out officially this week. It's pretty much the definition of a grower. The songs of Fred Nicolaus and Grizzly Bear 's Daniel Rossen are immediately arresting and pretty, but it takes a few listens for all of their subtly odd twists and turns to really take root. In her review today of Department of Eagles' fine In Ear Park , Amanda Petrusich calls the album "Ambitious and complex... stuffed with cocooning harmonies and shimmering, sunlight-smacking-the-Pacific melodies-- a languid, easy West Coast record (think Randy Newman or SMiLE ), infused with classic East Coast anxiety." Nowhere on the album is this tension more manifest than on "No One Does It Like You", an alternate version of which is heard here on a rooftop in the second part of the band's appearance on "Don't Look Down". Kevin Maney writes: A little more than a year ago, I was at Joost's New York headquarters listening to CEO Mike Volpi talk about a big project at Joost to get LIVE broadcasts of mass-market events like college basketball games to work. Sending high-quality stored and forwarded video around the Web has only been really workable for a couple of years. LIVE niche TV -- something like UStream -- has been workable for about that long, too. But serving tens of millions of video streams at once -- with little delay and little buffering -- has been a problem that Joost, Hulu, Microsoft and others have only recently solved. AOL did it with the Live8 in 2005 -- but then-CEO Jon Miller told me it only worked because AOL spent massive amounts of money on the servers and bandwidth -- not something that you want to do every day. Tonight, Hulu for the first time will offer a LIVE broadcast -- of the presidential debates. LIVE TV will be a big deal for the Web. A TV weatherman stunned his presenter girlfriend when he proposed to her LIVE on-air. Emily Leonard, of Texas based KAMC looked shocked when boyfriend appeared on the screens in her studio, as well she might, he works for another station. Matt Laubhan then told viewers the normal sports report on the morning show was being replaced by some "breaking news" asking them to "sit back and watch me make a young woman cry, hopefully in a good way. He then walked over to the desk where Emily was presenting the LIVE show, dropped to one knee and asked her: "I was wanting to know if you might want to marry me, how about it?" Nice to see Matt is an old fashioned guy and stuck with the tradition of adding 'how about it?' at the end of the proposal. ...
