EDMONTON - It sure would be a shame if Sheryl Crow goes down in the annals of pop songcraft as a promising sprinter who couldn't come through in the long run - huge hits out of the gate, great potential, writing with emotional and political substance and yet ends up doing duets with people like Kid Rock and Sting. ...

Carlile's "Story" continues with an exclusive iTunes EP. Finally getting an iPod was one thing; figuring out how to use it was something else. Fascinated by Apple’s colorful hipster style ad campaign, I couldn’t wait to figure out how to synch my new iPod to iTunes. Having dial-up internet didn’t help the process and after many failed purchase attempts, I turned to Apple’s... ...

California punk rockers Unwritten Law have recently released their second LIVE DVD for your visual and listening pleasure. This is the best thing Gilmour has done in a quarter century It has long amused me that so much acrimony, money, and energy was devoted to resolving the rights to the name Pink Floyd, only for David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason to do so very little with it once they "won" it. Since settling their dispute with Roger Waters, the Floyd made exactly two studio records under the Pink Floyd... ...

The first LIVE solo album from Joe Lynn Turner is out this month. Despite the fact that he was born in New Jersey, I am going to try and present a case for including Joe Lynn Turner's latest LIVE CD in the 'Eurorock' section! First, this thirteen track album was recorded in Germany. Secondly JLT is, of course, best known for his work with Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, a brief stint with Deep... ...

But Gdansk's highlight is “Echoes,” the full 25 minutes of the Floyd classic that rivals the majesty of the Meddle version, as Gilmour’s guitar weeps strong. And this being s one of Wright’s final recorded performances, his vocals on “Comfortably Numb,” make LIVE in Gdansk as solid a LIVE album as there ever was, even if its not Pink Floyd..it’s damn close.

...

What Otley has rightly become used to when the Duncan McFarlane Band plays the Folk Festival there, is a glowingly satisfied home crowd with a similar reaction from visitors who know the band's sound - and amidst all this, many new listeners simply astounded at the quality of Duncan and his musicians. Well, this year even those most familiar with the work of the outstanding folk-rock six-piece were impressed beyond their expectations. Through a festival weekend that featured fifty acts at a dozen venues, the band played on three different stages - twice with the full electric line-up; once in its acoustic guise (in addition to Duncan's solo presence at two songwriting events) - and all with hardly any repeated material from gig to gig. It was the electric sound, full of eagerness and in prime condition that rocked Kork's wine bar in the early phase of the festival on Friday night. From its opening chord, going into 'Rakish Young Fellow' (with potent additional flavouring to acknowledge International Talk-Like-A-Pirate-Day) and for the next hour and a half, beautifully governed playing and singing earned the description 'immense' from a crowd including plenty of other musicians. It was success in a variety of styles and tempos, and no simple matter of established repertoire for a guaranteed effect: new and distinctive songs were introduced and acclaimed, including the remarkable 'For Jane' inspired by a most unusual view of the applaudi ...

What would ex-Boyracer member Ged and ex indie sweet band Grammatics synth player sound like together? Not perfect. But that's what made their band Wonderswan so addictively charming. Playing at Tiger Trap, Leeds new all request alternative night at Santiago, they were experienced yet youthful, gently arousing the audience. (Think early Cribs gigs, sweaty, overcrowded, smothered with anticipation - before NME labelled the North 'cool' and ruined it all). The tracks were playful, characterised by staccato chords and confident expressive drumming, all concealing the Julian Casablancas-esque sexualised moaning. The scuzzy set mirrored that of Times New Vikings and Psychedelic Horseshit with the unpolished, half buried slurred vocals "...you said, we could maybe go to bed, but you never call" . Frequently inaudible, but who needs to hear the singer's voice anyway? Constant technical difficulties only added to the defective yet brilliant thoughts of 'it's only a gig, everyone is pissed - no-one will notice' attitude. This raw and honest gig at Tiger Trap has set the challenge for future bands at new Leeds club nights. With bigger venues hosting national bands aiming to seduce the students, (Carling Academy, The Courteeners and overprices drinks? No thanks) it's a positive thought to know that Wonderswan are doing the opposite. And better. Read more about the featured bands: Wonderswan . Read more from this author: Charlotte Oxnard . ...
