Chris McKenzie went 2-for-4 with a game-tying two-RBI single in the top of the seventh for Marlborough, who rallied to beat host Shrewsbury 12-8 in eight innings. Shrewsbury lead 4-0 heading into the top of the seventh, when Dillon LaForce got the rally started for Marlborough (3-16) with one of his two hits, a leadoff single. After a few hits made it 4-2, McKenzie hit a single with the bases loaded, scoring two runners and tying the game at 4-4. Ryan Sivret, who advanced to third on McKenzie's hit, scored on a wild pitch to give Marlborough a 5-4 lead. Shrewsbury was down to their last strike when a runner on third scored on a passed ball, forcing extra innings. However, Marlborough's bats really woke up in the eighth, as they went through four different Shrewsbury pitchers. Marlborough scored seven runs in the top of the eighth, on seven singles. Oddly enough, Marlborough had no extra base hits in the entire game despite scoring 12 times. McKenzie also got the win in relief, as he came in for Paul Murray in the seventh. Murray allowed just two earned runs in six innings, and started the big rally in the eighth inning. Mark Forster finished 2-for-5 with an RBI for Marlborough. "It's good to get the win. We've been playing a lot of people close, Milford the other night most recently," said Marlborough manager Lonnie Quirion. BASEBALL season may be entering its final innings on the national level, but locally at least one team is still winning games. Wallenpaupack Area’s American LEGION entry recently traveled to the Electric City for a wood bat tournament. Coach Jerry Capone’s squad battled its way to a second place finish in a tough 12-team field. Paupack opened its championship quest with a lopsided 11-1 victory over Millville. The game was played under the lights at Battaglia Park. DJ O’Heren drew the starting assignment and earned the decision. The Buckhorn southpaw worked five frames before handing the ball off to Corey Capone, who pitched two scoreless innings. O’Heren also led the offensive assault with two hits and three runs scored. John Gardepe and Jeff DeSane chipped in with a pair of base knocks each. All-star catcher Chris Ortiz added one hit, two walks and two runs scored. Paupack played its way into the title tilt via a razor-thin 5-4 win over Dunmore. Matt Fiorletta worked a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to force in O’Heren with the winning run. Capone and Gardepe paced Paupack with a double apiece. Tim Silsby, who came on in relief, was the winner. Sadly for local hardball fans, the Bucks self-destructed in the championship game. Paupack and Valley View were tied 2-2 in the sixth before the Cougars pushed across five unearned runs for an eventual 8-2 triumph. Jeff DeSane kept up his torrid hitting pace with three sing ...

SHELBY - Staff members scouted for extra chairs Tuesday at the Cleveland County Chamber Board's monthly meeting, where enthusiasm and anticipation supplanted the often mundane mood.Board Chair Steve Padgett's invocation acknowledged, "Things are not as good as they could be in Cleveland County" but something in the atmosphere seemed to dismiss that notion.Members basked in the success and estimated $4 million cash infusion from back-to-back American LEGION BASEBALL tournaments, learned that more than 20 business prospects are currently being courted and wholeheartedly endorsed the recent clarification of the roles and interaction of the Chamber and Cleveland 20/20 Economic Development Partnership."We've worked hard to clarify what had been the rubbing points," 20/20 Chair John Young explained to new Chamber President Michael Chrisawn, attending his first board meeting."We're one of two successful relationships in the region with the Chamber and economic development working hand in hand," Young said.Financially, the Chamber is "still looking at a tight year," treasurer Shannon Kennedy reported, but the crunch is easing, boosted in the last month by the transfer of more than $32,000 from the 20/20 coffers. ...
