About 150 American LEGION Riders turned out for the 2008 State LEGION Rally last weekend in El Dorado. There is some confusion about who these guys — and gals — are, according to Tom Wenrich, a Prattan who is a member and director of the American LEGION Riders at Stafford, which along with the group from Medicine Lodge, will host the 2009 rally. They’re not a motorcycle club — they are members of an American LEGION Post, Sons of American LEGION or LEGION Auxiliary first; as motorcycle enthusiasts they are another part of the service organization family. They are also members of the Patriot Guard, which has just one mission — to stand between families of fallen soldiers and the “idiots,” (protestors at military funerals are not named, thwarting their desire for publicity), according to Wenrich. The American LEGION Riders were founded in 1993 in Michigan and have grown to nearly 800 chapters nationwide. They’re a diverse group, including members of all ages from 18 on up. Like the American LEGION, they advocate and lobby on behalf of military veterans and participate in local service projects. Of course, they’re also dedicated to good camaraderie, as evidenced in the weekend’s horseshoe tournaments, bike show, motorcycle games, group meals and a Sunday church service. The hostesses for this week’s event were Eunice Thom and Arlene Wilber. Prizes were awarded were the lowest net scores in each flight. Under the giant spherical bulbs that illuminate the newly renovated Lincoln Hall hung a piece of Boxford – and American – history Monday night. Shifting around storage items during renovations to the almost 100-year-old hall, members of the Boxford American LEGION found a raggedy but captivating 35-star American flag. At 21-feet-long and 15-feet-wide, the flag surely wasn’t missed when it flew 70 feet above the Civil War monument at Rocky Point in West Boxford. American LEGION members congregated Monday night to inspect the flag and discuss what could be done with it. The 35-star flag was in commission from 1863 to 1865 and represents the addition of the state of West Virginia to the union. Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson served under this flag, according to The Flag Network. Longtime Boxford resident Ken Chadwick explained that before deciding what could be done with the flag to best preserve it, they first have to figure out who owns it. The American LEGION eventually became the caretakers of the flag, but the Second Congregation Church of Boxford owns the land where the flag was flown, he explained. “All that land is owned by the parish,” Chadwick said about the area of Rocky Point where a monument sits on small hill. He believes the church owns the flag but is not positive. Members of the church did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
