The LAMBETH CONFERENCE: The turning point that wasn't By John Bryson Chane September 2, 2008 The 2008 LAMBETH CONFERENCE, the once-a-decade gathering of bishops from around the Anglican Communion, can best be described in two words; optimistic and troublesome. I have always believed that relationship building must be at the center of all we do in the life of the Anglican Communion, and this year's CONFERENCE, which drew more than 650 bishops to the University of Kent in Canterbury, provided a great opportunity for this to begin in a way that was not the case at the previous gathering. The non-legislative nature of this CONFERENCE was in many ways a success. ... Source: www.virtueonline.org --- 4 days ago
New Westminster Bishop Spins LAMBETH CONFERENCE to Canadian Anglicans Two African bishops who attended were threatened, said Ingham Many African Bishops wanted to attend but were prevented, Bishop charged By David W. Virtue www.virtueonline.org 10/8/2008 The ultra-liberal Bishop of New Westminster, Michael Ingham told Anglicans in his diocese that two African bishops, one from Kenya and the other from Rwanda, were threatened by their archbishops if they showed up at the LAMBETH CONFERENCE earlier this year. In a tape-recorded message sent to VirtueOnline, Ingham told his audience that an unnamed well-educated Kenyan bishop from a rural and poor diocese was told he would get into trouble with his archbishop (Benjamin Nzimbi) and suffer the consequences if he attended LAMBETH 2008. ... Quincy and Springfield Dioceses Demonstrate Unity but No Talk of Merger By David W. Virtue www.virtueonline.org 9/2/2008 More than 300 clergy and laity from the Dioceses of Quincy and Springfield met at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Springfield, August 30. In a powerful show of unity both dioceses pledged to work together, but scotched talk of merger. "The meeting was billed as a post Global Anglican Futures CONFERENCE (GAFCON) and LAMBETH CONFERENCE gathering to assess where the Anglican Communion, The Episcopal Church, our Dioceses, our congregations and our members are and what the future might hold for all of the above," Springfield Bishop Peter Beckwith told VOL. ... Springfield Bishop Reflects on GAFCON and LAMBETH by Peter Beckwith The first Global Anglican Futures CONFERENCE (GAFCON) was held June 21st through June 29th in Jerusalem, Israel. The 2008 once a decade LAMBETH CONFERENCE was held July 16th through August 3rd in Canterbury, England. As perhaps you are aware, I wasn't inclined to attend either one because I didn't think my participation would be worth the cost in time, energy and money. As a result of urging from a number of quarters, I changed my mind. First, I decided to go to GAFCON, then LAMBETH. In retrospect, I believe it was important that I participated in both. GAFCON was "billed" as a "pilgrimage" in addition to being a CONFERENCE. Melinda and I, having never been to the Holy Lands, found visiting the Old City, the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan River, Capernaum and Bethlehem awe inspiring. ... CANADA: It is impossible to go back, bishops say of moratoria by MARITES N. SISON staff writer The Anglican Journal September 2, 2008 Canterbury, England Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, said he wasn't surprised with the LAMBETH CONFERENCE's call for a moratorium on actions that have led to divisions over sexuality. He said that bishops needed to be honest that this has been "a huge, huge challenge to implement." Archbishop Hiltz said that the moratorium and other recommendations are matters for the Canadian house of bishops and the Council of General Synod - the church's governing body between General Synods - to discuss. Bishops were also presented with a proposal to create a pastoral forum that would create a "safe space" for conservative Anglicans who have left their churches. ... Truthful Language and Orderly Separation by Rev. Dr. Ephraim Radner Anglican Communion Institute http://www.anglicancommunioninstitute.com/?p=262 September 9th, 2008 The Anglican Communion is currently pursuing a number of activities in response to the acrimonious struggle over sexual teaching and discipline within our churches. These activities have been encouraged by the Communion's leadership, including at the recent LAMBETH CONFERENCE. I have, to various degrees, been a supporter of these activities, not least because I have trusted those who have promoted these means towards ecclesial healing. I am increasingly skeptical, however, that the way these activities have been framed - descriptively and practically - represents the true nature of our disputes. ... UK: Church of England's parliament is 'sinful' over women bishops vote, says Bishop of Fulham The Church of England's governing body is sinful and should be destroyed, according to a leading traditionalist. By Martin Beckford, Religious Affairs Correspondent The Telegraph http://tinyurl.com/4aehny October 10, 2008 The Rt Rev John Broadhurst, the Bishop of Fulham, condemned the General Synod for going against the Bible and tradition by voting to introduce women bishops without making provision for opponents to the historic reform. In a strongly-worded speech, he also declared the 80 million-strong Anglican Communion "finished" and likened the organisation of its once-a-decade meeting, the LAMBETH CONFERENCE, to Stalin's Russia. ...
