The Offensive Line of the 49ers did not play very well last year. However, it was more due to the poor QB play offered by Alex Smith and Trent Dilfer that they looked worse than they did. Also, some players like Justin Smiley, Kwame Harris and Jonas Jennings did not do the job. However, the 49ers trading that first round pick in the 2008 to acquire Joe Staley remains a smart move. Staley may be better than anyone else to come out of Round One in 2008 and he will now start at Left Tackle. Adam Snyder, Eric Heitmann and Tony Wragge will for a solid interior threesome. Jonas Jennings, the former LT, will now move to Right Tackle, where he might be better suited. Free agent pick-up Barry Sims and oft-injured David Baas will be the primary back-ups. Still, the line is far from elite. However, it will be more than serviceable if it's stays healthy. Staley could flash Pro Bowl ability. ...

Faithful readers of the Cohn Zohn surely have noticed that in the past few weeks Lowell has written extensively about the Niners -- specifically he did lengthy interviews with Alex Smith, Mike Martz and Mike Nolan. These are interviews 49er fans crave. Lowell did not do interviews with similarly important figures on the Raiders. Lowell didn't even try. The Raider Nation may think Lowell's lack of Raider interviews reflects a bias against the Raiders on Lowell's part. That's incorrect. Lowell writes way more on the Niners because the Niners -- like the Warriors -- go out of their way to make coaches and players available to the media, including Lowell. They made Nolan available to Lowell even though Nolan had hard feelings against Lowell because of things Lowell wrote. The Niners understand the meaning and value of good public relations, and they want their people to be accountable. In other words, they go about their business in a professional manner. Not the Raiders. This is the Raiders' business. But they have no one who can or will set up an interview for Lowell or other columnists. Here's an example. I wanted to interview left tackle Kwame Harris in training camp and phoned one of the Raiders PR staff to ask Harris if he was agreeable. Let me take that back. I phoned someone I thought could help. I don't know if he's on the PR staff -- for so many people on the Raiders you never know exactly what they do or what their job title is ...

While Ernie Grunfeld's Caron for Kwame trade is undoubtedly the best move of his tenure as Wizards' GM so far, the Jamison for Stackhouse and Harris trade was a great move in its own right.  Not only did we get rid of Stack, who never meshed with Arenas and couldn't seem to deal with the fact that he wasn't the man anymore, but we were able to get a better player that was a tremendous fit alongside Agent Zero. I don't think anyone would say that they wish they could go back in time and undo the trade.  But let's say that for whatever reason the trade falls through and you'lre left with the 5th pick in the draft and Jerry Stackhouse.  What would you have done with the pick?  Here are your options: Draft Josh Childress: The knock on Childress is that he's someone that does a lot of things well, but he doesn't do anything great.  While that may be true, you have to figure that his good, but not great defense would still be better than most of the rest of team's D and if nothing else, would've been a better do-it-all option than Jared Jeffries.  Just make sure that you don't ever let him get a passport. Draft Luol Deng: The most complete player in the 6-10 range in the draft, Deng would give the team someone that could give you some solid scoring and rebounding at SF and make Stackhouse even more expendable.  However, if you take Deng than you're probably not going to land Caron Butler a year later, which means that you just might ha ...

Over at Bleacher Report is a suprisingly decent article on the Raiders' O-Line.  The Article covers:   Center: Jake Grove : SYNOPSIS:  Named started for 08 after beating out veteran John Wade. Umer Waris (writer of the artcicle) believes he is on the up swing of his career. Left Guard: Robert Gallery: SYNOPSIS : Bounced between positions and finally found a home on Left Guard. Seems to have made strides under Cable, maybe even a Pro Bowl @ some time. Left Tackle: Kwame Harris  SYNOPSIS: Blaming his lack of development on coach changing in SF.  Knapp believes Harris is a prototypical LT, with his size and speed, and a few rusty corners only needing to be oiled and running again. Final paragraph of article: "Reflecting back on the O-line, Raider Fans can only expect it to get better with its second year under Cable. With McFadden ready to make the rushing attack even stronger and Russell looking to compete, the Raiders may already have the pieces to rise into a threatening force on offense."   ...

Aw the O-Line, I can remember when the Raider's O-line had great players like Gene Upshaw (may he rest in peace), Art Shell, Jim Otto, Steve Wisnewski, and Dave Dalby among others. But now the O-line is my second biggest concern (WR is first). Tackle play isn't the only problem. Penalties are still too many and depth is incredibly weak. We best hope for an injury free line or we're doomed.   Left Tackle:   1. Kwame Harris- Why could we not have drafted an O-Lineman? Instead we draft a prototypical San Fran-sissy-co washout. But like i said he's prototypical and to be fair wasn't in a good situation with the 49ers. We all know how inconsistent systems work out for a team. In a slightly more stable Oakland organization (mainly O-Line scheme cause Cable's not going anywhere) with a much more suitable style, Harris could become a good player in two years or so. Harris is already a quality run blocker, but he really has to work on stepping it up in the passing game. Combining Harris's inconsistency pass blocking and the fact that Russell is practically a rookie will lead to some losses, but once these players meld together and get better with experience, he should be fine. Grade: B-   2. Mario Henderson- Oh mario mario mario. Let me tell you, I would not even have this guy on roster if I was Oakland. I wouldn't start him in any type of football, arena, canadian, pee-wee, you name it. Henderson plays with no passion and lacks at every le ...
