Knox College and Monmouth College recently were chosen for the Princeton Review’s 2009 edition of “The Best 368 Colleges.” Only 15 percent of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada are selected for the issue. In the rankings, Knox placed ninth nationally for its student radio station, 17th for theater and 16th for financial aid. The college also was included in the “Best Colleges in the Midwest” regional listing. Monmouth did not rank in any specific categories, but once again was named a “Best College in the Midwest.” “Their rankings are non-scientific opinion surveys” of students, said Peter Bailley, associate director of media relations for Knox, which he believes “says great things” about what the college is doing. The college also scored 88 on a 100-point scale for the quality of its academic programs and 87 for academic quality of the student body. Knox has been featured in the Princeton Review’s listing for several years, going up and down in rankings, depending on the year. Monmouth has also fared well in the Princeton Review’s rankings for the last several years, and the fact that much of the determination comes from student surveys. “I think that the students who do choose Monmouth really seem to believe deeply in the experience they get,” said Jeff Rankin, director of communications for Monmouth. “Most of our students feel that there’s an intense feeling of personal engagement — that’s what makes Monmouth s ...

If you haven't driven by Knox College lately, you might put that on your calendar for the next couple of weeks. Or, just wait until the sports seasons kick off in the next couple of months. Specifically, the football field and the basketball gymnasium. Knox athletic director Chad Eisele took some time out of his schedule this week to answer a couple of questions about it all.   Q:  Could you describe the turf that will be placed on the football field? Eisele:  'What we're getting is the latest model available in synthetic turf and that's durasthine made by Field Turf. It's individual blades of plastic. It used to be thicker fibers and, as it would wear, it would tear. It would lose its rigidity and fold over. That's when a field looks matted and worn down. And now, the individual blades are standing on their own and they've got a spine that keeps them rigid for a longer period of time. It's what all the NFL teams are putting in. The (New England) Patriots just put it in. Because of the individual spines and the way it's done, they actually put more sand into it. It makes it feel like more of a natural feel than the synthetic.' Q:  How will the seating be different at the football field? EISELE:  'We've added two times the seating on the visitors side. We've done nothing to the home side, but the big difference is going to be that there'll be a sidewalk all the way around. We've built the sidewalk big enough so that people can sit their ...

Beyond the upgraded facilities at Knox College, it seems that there is starting to be much more of an emphasis on sports. Brian Thiessen, who served as the sports information director for two years at Knox, recently left the Galesburg campus for a job at St. Ambrose University. Replacing Thiessen will be two co-sports information directors in William Becque and Katie Schneider. Those two names might ring a bell for sports fans of the Prairie Fire. Both are 22 years old and 2008 graduates of Knox College. Becque, who grew up in Carbondale, played four years on the offensive line at Knox.   Becque said he'll always cherish getting to play alongside his brother (Bradley) on the offensive line one season. 'I kind of took it for granted and then he (Bradley) got hurt last season,' said William. 'So, it makes me appreciate that season that much better.' About being a co-sports information director at Knox, William added, 'I worked shortly for a bank and didn't really like it. I applied for this job that I really wanted and a chance to come back here. I missed Knox and being a part of it. I know what they are trying to do with athletics. They've come a long way in my four years and I want to see it all the way through. My whole life I've been interested in seeing this side of athletics and how it's run. I'm not so interested in the coaching part of it, but the day to day. I'm really excited about it and getting to know people in the community ...
