Great show guys. To start Lore's performance was really good. I never knew it was her first live performance. Lore was even kind enough to come down and greet Hillary and me during the show. I told her that her set gave me a Portishead/trip-hop vibe and I meant it in a good way. You have a great voice Lore! Excellent show. Hillary says your live guitarist reminds her of James Franco from Pineapple Express. <img... ...

We all know that hip hop is the most popular genre in the ultraverse, but it wasn’t until I stood next to a geeky white dude (he had a battery-operated t-shirt that responded to music) that I realized how many people love rap music. The whole of Knitting Factory, in fact, was filled with grown up Dungeon Masters bobbing their brains and throwing up props to a succession of hip hop crews. This is the kind of show where you have no idea who’s playing, and what exactly is going on with all these kids around you; you’re in a whole new dimension where everything is strange, and doesn’t make any sense, and totally interesting. This time, the unknown universe I found myself in was a Themselves show, a techno-hip hop duo who are part of the Anticon stable of artists that also contains Why?, Alias (ones of the show’s openers), and a bunch of other white rappers—rap for kids who are scared of Lil Wayne and think mainstream hip hop is lame because it’s about gangster shit and hoe’s. Themselves are two dudes: Jel, who works the drum machine and sequencer, and Doseone, who raps and occasionally handles other miscellaneous electronics. Doseone is an extremely skilled rapper, though somewhat tiring. He rhymes in Aesop Rock-style hyperspeed, which is neat, at first, but after a while I’m like “OK, I get it, but I’d actually like to hear what you’re saying.” Still, Themselves manage to put on a pretty good show. Rap is notoriously bad live, but J ...
