K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune: "Let the logjam begin. With Ben Gordon signed, the battle for backcourt playing time involving Gordon, Kirk Hinrich, Larry Hughes, Derrick Rose and Thabo Sefolosha begins. Somebody will be unhappy. 'That's where Vinny is going to have a tough time,' general manager John Paxson conceded, referring to first-year coach Vinny Del Negro. 'We're going to develop Derrick this year -- he's going to play. So the others will have to play themselves into minutes.' The upbeat Del Negro, who said he wants his rotation set soon, called it a 'good problem.'" Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle: "Rockets owner Leslie Alexander did not, however, agree with the notion the Rockets are gambling on this season, adding that Ron Artest is not necessarily a one-year player, even though he is going into the last season of his contract. 'I think our window of opportunity is longer than people think it is because Tracy (McGrady, 30) is not old, Yao (Ming, 28) is not old, and Ron (28) is not old. 'We've always signed everybody we wanted to sign. We never lost anybody we really didn't want to lose. And everybody's loved playing here, so I assume if Ron has a good season, we'll sign him, too. So I don't think we gambled everything for just this year.'" Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star Tribune: "With the addition of Mike Miller, the Wolves this season could play a lineup that features three players who shot better t ...

Brian Hendrickson of The Columbian: "As the media was allowed into the season's first practice, No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden -- preparing for his first season after spending all of last year recovering from microfracture surgery -- was nowhere to be found. He emerged moments later with trainer Jay Jensen, limped down the sideline on a sprained right ankle, hopped on a stationary bike and rode it for the remainder of the workout. What followed felt like a four-alarm media emergency. ... In fact, the injury was as mild as they come -- a grade-one sprain, GM Kevin Pritchard said. It likely would not have prevented Oden from returning to practice had he chosen to do so. But when you're Greg Oden and the anticipation of your debut has been building for 15 months, nothing is a minor injury -- a reality that Oden acknowledged with a terse tone. 'I can't even fall on the ground without somebody's breath going away,' Oden said. And up to that point, the 7-foot center said he had participated in the full practice without any signs of trouble." John Jackson of the Chicago Sun-Times: "When Ben Gordon returns to the practice court today, the Bulls will have five guards on the roster who expect to play a major role this season. Four of those players -- Gordon, Kirk Hinrich, Larry Hughes and Thabo Sefolosha -- started for at least a significant stretch last season and the fifth, rookie Derrick Rose, was the No. 1 pick in the draft in June. Since ...

NBA training camps have begun; the season is rapidly approaching. Can you dig it? I knew that you could. And so we continue our previews: 30 of them in 30 days. Up next is a team that wants you to love it live : The Chicago Bulls. When last we saw them: Finished 33-49, fourth in the Central Division and 11th overall in the East. Which would have been a pretty disappointing finish even if people hadn't been picking them to go to the Finals last season. Key Arrivals: Derrick Rose, Elton Brown (wait, who?), Roger Powell (double who?), Darius Washington (who squared?) Key Departures: Chris Duhon ( usually he didn't play much anyway ), JamesOn Curry (no more public urination !), Shannon Brown The Good: Derrick Rose. ( According to NBA.com , "Many consider Rose to be a 6-3 version of LeBron James." Wait...what? Really?!) Luol Deng signed a six year, $71 million deal to stay in Chicago, which should keep him from being all sulky and distracted like he was last season. Ben Gordon finally resigned (although only for one year), and he's really excited about it ( according to his agent , anyway). The core group (Deng, Gordon and Kirk Hinrich) have been together for several years now, and that's supposedly always a good thing (even if it wasn't last year). Drew Gooden and Larry Hughes should be totally integrated into the team now. Vinny Del Negro has assembled a group assistants with actual NBA coaching experience (Del Harris, Bernie Bickers ...

Kansas University finally decided to retire Kirk Hinrich's No. 10 jersey, according to the Lawrence Journal-World. A date for the official ceremony at Allen Fieldhouse has yet to be chosen, but is expected to take place sometime this season. Not sure why KU waited five years to do this, since Hinrich's college teammate Nick Collison had his jersey hung from the rafters shortly after leaving school in 2003. Hinrich and Collison led the Jayhawks to a pair of Final Fours and the NCAA title game in '03. Hinrich still returns to Lawrence, Kan., frequently but sometimes gives the impression that he's not as tight with his alma mater as he would be if coach Roy Williams were still there. So it was nice to see Bill Self offer some kind words about Hinrich in the Journal-World. read more ...

Kansas coach Bill Self didn't just hand out KU's 2008 national championship rings at a private ceremony Friday evening. He also revealed that former KU point guard Kirk Hinrich, now with the NBA's Chicago Bulls, will become the 25th men's player to have his jersey hung from the rafters at Allen Fieldhouse. Hinrich, who was in town for the ring ceremony, was in shock. "He about lost it," Self said. "It was really cool, because he loves KU. He gave his heart and soul to this place." Self said that Hinrich's name will hang next to that of his former KU teammate, Nick Collison. Both players led KU to back-to-back Final Fours in 2002-03. " (Hinrich) is without question one of the best players in the history of the school," Self said. "We're proud to have his jersey hang up there for the rest of time." ...

Filed under: Bulls , Eastern , NBA Rumors Yesterday we told you that Ben Gordon had finally decided to accept Chicago's one-year qualifying offer , but it turns out that's not entirely true. Gordon has given the Bulls until Wednesday to present their best long-term offer, at which point he'll decide whether he wants to take it or sign the qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Bulls are believed to have offered $58 million over six years, which is a far cry from Gordon's asking price of $72 million over six years. There's almost no chance that the Bulls will close that gap in the next 24 hours, but it's possible that Gordon will cave at the last second and take whatever he can get. Why would Gordon do that? Because thanks to Chicago's crowded backcourt, there's a very good chance that his stats will take a step back this year. Most players try to step up their production in a contract year, but that'll be nearly impossible in a backcourt rotation that already features Derrick Rose , Kirk Hinrich , Larry Hughes , and Thabo Sefolosha . Conventional wisdom suggests the team will make a trade once Gordon's status is settled, but John Paxson admitted he's reluctant to part with Hinrich if there's a chance Gordon walks at the end of the year. From the Chicago Sun-Times : 'We do have a crowded backcourt,'' Paxson said. ''Obviously, the logical person that people were talking about moving was Kirk [Hinric ...

Mike McGraw, with lots of interesting perspectives on Gordon and the other guards from media day: "I'm going to be part of the team," Gordon said Monday at the Berto Center. "All I can do is continue to be professional. That's why I'm here today. That's why I'll be with my teammates tomorrow even if I'm not going to practice." ... "I don't want this to be a situation where anyone thinks we don't value Ben, because we do," Paxson said. "If he's on our team, we hope he has a great year and helps us win games." It's conceivable that Gordon will threaten to take the qualifying offer until the last possible moment, in hopes that the Bulls improve their offer. An increase doesn't seem likely, though, because the Bulls' payroll is approaching the luxury-tax threshold. Asked if he's ruled out re-signing with the Bulls if he becomes unrestricted next summer, Gordon replied, "I don't know. Ask me in a year." Once Gordon's contract is resolved, the Bulls will address a related problem - what to do with the crowd in the backcourt. They finished last season with Gordon, Kirk Hinrich, Larry Hughes, Thabo Sefolosha and Chris Duhon struggling to get comfortable with inconsistent playing time. Since then, Duhon left for New York as a free agent, only to be replaced by Rose, the top pick of the NBA draft. The Bulls plan to bring Rose along slowly, but he'll be a fixture at point guard sooner rather than later. "It's not going to be easy," first-year co ...

I think this is a perfect trade for both sides.  Bulls trade Hinrich and Thabo, and maybe a 2nd round pick to the Orlando Magic for Hedo Turkoglu, JJ Reddick, and Brian Cook. Why this works: Orlando. Orlando is a solid team but really is missing a solid PG to bring them over the hump.  Captain Kirk really is a solid PG and will prove it again actually playing with guys who can play inside.  Folks forget that Kirk was the starting PG for the FIBA team 2 years ago and did quite well playing with guys who can score inside. His contract looks rough but improves over the remaining years.....Orlando is so capped out due to Rashard Lewis's ridiculously mammoth contract that they need the help they can get.  Having Lewis-Howard-Hinrich is a great trio for them.  They also add in Thabo a guy who I think is a better version of Pietrus.  They'll have a defensive ace in the SG/SF spots for all 48 minutes rotating Thabo with Pietrus too.  I think this is fabulous. They give up on a player that they will likely lose after this season for nothing (Hedo who has a player option and is a very affordable salary at $6.8M).  THey give up on Reddick who's a bust and won't play either way.  And they give away a bad contract in Cook, who was never worth his $3-3.5M salary.  I think this definately improves them.  Orlando also needs to put the pressure on Lewis to perform to his vast abilities, especially now that he's played more like 3rd fiddle to Howar ...

All things considered, it's probably just yet another negotiating ploy by Gordon to get the Bulls to do something . Something besides Paxson throwing his hands up in the air and saying (figuratively of course...from what I've seen they're saying nothing) "what can I do? it's the tax!". Mike McGraw couldn't get a confirmation , and according to Henry Abbott's peeps the report is false. Kelly Dwyer showed his confusion (through confusing prose) over both Gordon's value and this stalemate with the Bulls. Unlike some, he understands that Gordon's definitely valuable, his faults are overplayed, he's consistently played the good soldier while "being taken in and out of the starting lineup for arbitrary reasons by coaches who were grasping and struggling with superstition" (love that line, KD), and that the Bulls will be abhorrent on offense without him. But that the Bulls shouldn't budge. Even if it means Gordon going to Russia? He could take that Russian offer, watch as the Bulls trade away Andres Nocioni or dump Kirk Hinrich after Hinrich spends one more year as Chicago's point guard with a teenaged Derrick Rose on the sidelines, and come back to a Bulls team willing to come just as close to the luxury tax as they were this summer (that is to say, just under it) while paying Gordon what he thinks he deserves. Would Chicago fans put up with that? The smart ones would. The pull-up-your-bootstraps ones? Yeah, they wouldn't go for it. I feel o ...

Bullies fans, like you all i thought like most bulls fans that rebuild part 3, would start off with a bang this summer ,with the no.1 pick, and it did .pickin Rose was the rite move, lets end that talk now.B.G has been a huge? since he didnt sign the offer last year, what was pax to do be left with captian sometimes i feel like playin tonight Kirk, larry hughes, was just thrown in the wallace trade,And the real goal of thet was to get gooden, wicth i have to go into for a sec, drew a former teamate of Hinrich, who for the past two seasons have been begging the front office to get.happened ,besides drew was dead in clevland not seeing any playing time who was a backup for then d marshall, and now ben wallace.after the trade Kirk did play a little better.and thabo i guess i still dont get why alot of fans like this kid,the wingspan? gimmee a break maybe cause hes not a midget like he rest of the backcourt.like signing deng shores up the 3 spot  selecting d-rose shores up the1.so this leaves the 2,4.and 5 spot. So what do the bulls do,one  to save the season  and two to develope the younglings and three add he two or three pieces that will make us contenders .we need shooting, inside outside everywhere.we can forget about B.G besides I mean do we want this guy spoiling the bunch with his bad attitude it looks like he has nowhere else to go,so tis likely hell sign the Q.O..We trade his ass as soon as possible,im thinkng along with noch.free u ...
