“Collected Stories,” Donald Margulies’ Pulitzer-nominated drama, will replace director Daniel Sullivan’s planned staging of “King Lear” as the final production on South Coast Repertory’s Segerstrom Stage next season. It will run from May 15 through June 14. Sullivan’s busy schedule necessitated the switch. (That’s the second time a local theater had to make major adjustments [...] ...

As most readers no doubt know, during last year and this, Ian toured in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of King Lear. I managed to see the play live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It could get worse, of course. The markets, I mean. “The worst is not/So long as we can say, ‘This is the worst’,” as Edgar cheerfully points out in King Lear. John McCain has cast himself as King Lear in a party full of ambitious sons, not daughters.   Had he picked one of them,  --  Mitt Romney,  Tim Pawlenty, Tom Ridge, John Thune,  Mike Huckabee -- he'd have gotten himself some protection, as he'd have a hyper-ambitious gent as his running mate actively working towards victory. But McCain didn't do that -- he picked a daughter far afield. Who loves Sarah Palin? Conservative activists, because they identify with her. Is Palin sufficient protection? Or is there going to be a heck of a lot of GOP infighting, backtalking, lackluster surrogate action come October? Does Palin have allies among the national bench of talking insiders?   My guess is she does not. She certainly did not have any internal allies before the pick. Charlie Black wanted Mitt Romney, Lindsey Graham wanted Joe Lieberman, etc.   There is a chance that McCain has made some new enemies, or in Romney's case, a re-enemy.   I know that most GOP strategist and consultants and politicians are reading the talking points. I know that many of them publicly say they're happy about the pick. I know that many of them are privately bewildered. I know that conservative activists by and large ARE happy about the pick. But whereas Obama managed to select one of the non-Hillary options that didn't produce inflammation, you might not be able to say the same about Palin. ...

The dramatic struggle played out backstage, pitting the great-grandchildren of composer Richard Wagner for control of the legendary festival dedicated to his music. When the curtain rose Monday, half-sisters Katharina Wagner and Eva Wagner-Pasquier had been chosen to succeed their father, Wolfgang, at the helm of the Bayreuth Festival, bringing the verve of youth and steady hand of experience to an event legendary among opera connoisseurs. The festival's board said Katharina Wagner and Eva Wagner-Pasquier would be co-directors of the annual extravaganza in Bavaria, after last week's end to their father's 57-year run as overseer of an event that began in 1876. The 24-member board sided with the half-sisters over their cousin Nike Wagner, who mounted a surprise bid just a week ago with renowned Belgian director Gerard Mortier, after a power struggle that stretched on like a Wagnerian opera but more closely resembled Shakespeare's "King Lear." "It was an extremely stressful time," Katharina said Monday. ...

Here's NEWSWEEK cultural critic Jeremy McCarter deconstructing the first full night of the GOP convention--and its "Country First" rhetoric.   Fred Thompson 's narcoleptic performance in this year's primaries proved that he's not the greatest candidate around. And when it comes to his day job, he's not exactly the guy you'll see leading the next big revival of King Lear . But as his starring turn at Tuesday night's Republican convention showed, he will always find work, because he has one rare skill in abundance: He is fluent in Heartland. Heartland isn't a foreign language; it's not even a dialect. It's a combination of certain words and certain visuals that add up to describe a worldview. It works via careful balance. So you hear, for instance, the lofty language of ancient and patriotic glory, of martial and heroic valor, but juxtaposed with a tone of Pepperidge Farm. Heartland thumps its chest and knows its strength, but labors under the existential dread of gathering foreign threat. Heartland also loves— loves —metaphor. Thus, a question of fiscal policy, in the hands of as skilled a practitioner as Thompson, becomes: "They say they are not going to take any water out of your side of the bucket, just the 'other' side of the bucket! That's their idea of tax reform." Democrats are no good at Heartland. Sure, they've got Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, who lit up last week's convention by sounding like an actual human being. ...
