Despite other possible factors — such as pollution, humpback Whales depleting their main food sources, or predation by Killer Whales — many people thought the fisheries had been caught with the smoking gun. You would be forgiven that doubting that this awesome object - displayed in the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History - is a fossil odontocete skull, but it is. Discovered in Lompoc, California, and as yet unreported in the scientific literature (so far as I can tell), it is the skull of a large predatory sperm whale purportedly closely related to the Japanese Miocene physeterid Brygmophyseter shigensis (but read on). The extant sperm whale Physeter lacks functional teeth in the upper jaw and in fact even possesses special sockets in the maxillae that house the lower jaw teeth when the mouth is closed (it may actually have as many as eight teeth in each maxilla, but when it does they are unerupted and remain buried in their alveoli). However, this was not true of all extinct physeteroids, many of which also possessed fully erupted premaxillary and maxillary teeth (Kellogg 1928, Kazár 2002). In some of these sperm Whales, large upper and lower jaw teeth, combined with a robust skull morphology and large body size (6-7 m long), indicate that the animals were macropredators, probably attacking other cetaceans (Bianucci & Landini 2006, Hampe 2006)... Pic somewhat related PETA has sent an official letter to InBev the multinational conglomerate that just bought out Anheuser-Busch, claiming that they have an anonymous donor with extremely deep pockets that wants to purchase at least one of the SeaWorld theme parks in order to free all the captive marine animals. PETA says that the park would not be closed and the animals would be replaced with virtual-reality or animatronic displays. While we applaud PETA for their balls on this one, and we do think it is evil to keep large and intelligent marine mammals in relatively small enclosures for the amusement of fat type-2 diabetics and their bedwetting hyperactive children, but virtual-reality and animatronic displays? Forget all the early 1990 pre-internet sci-fi talk, just free the animals and turn the place into a hippie theme park. Their anonymous donor is going to need really deep pockets. SeaWorld could be worth $5 or 6 Billion. SeaWorld Ohio--formerly the shittiest SeaWorld--was sold at a fire sale in 2001 for $110 million. Read . Cut from true mind, humanity adores the devil in the form of Cetus constellation.
