Back in 2001, when Khatami was in his second term as the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I wrote a piece in Iranian.com, titled "Slowly but surely", on why I voted for him. As expected it was criticized by some and approved by others. In that article, I posed a question that asked "Are we better off now compared to four years ago or not? " -Mehdi Amini ...

In the late 1990s, not long after pro-reform politician Mohammad Khatami swept to a landslide victory in the Iranian presidential elections, some Western observers started wondering if this was the step that would herald a collapse of the Islamic Republic — rather like the Soviet Union tumbled on Mikhail Gorbachev’s watch a decade earlier. It was [...] ...

While the Bush administration appears to be making an eighth-inning adjustment to its Iran policy, there was little evidence of a gentler Iranian attitude toward the United States at prayers today. The U.S. this week agreed to send an envoy to talks between European and Iranian negotiators over Iran's nuclear program. Hints increased that the U.S. may be interested in setting up a diplomatic outpost in Iran beyond the tiny Swiss-run interests section it now maintains. Iran's Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki today heartily welcomed such an expansion and repeated a call for more direct air flights between Tehran and the U.S. All this comes as Saeed Jalili, Iran's top nuclear negotiator, heads off to Geneva for talks with European, Russian and Chinese counterparts. But not all Iranians were so chummy. At Iran's 1,500th Friday prayer session since the once-outlawed sermons were resumed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami gave a typically fiery speech during which followers chanted slogans likening the U.S. to the Roman empire and punctuated the sermon with cries of "Death to America." Khatami, not to be confused with the liberal minded former president who shares the same last name, dismissed international concerns about Iran's nuclear programs as "pretexts" for pressuring Iran. "If not the nuclear issue, then human rights, and if there is no human rights case, they look for other pretexts, such animal rights ...

By: Manda Zand-Ervin On June 12th in Iran, nine women - who had called for a protest against the arrest of their friends - were arrested themselves. This demonstration was to have occurred on the anniversary of last year's mass arrests of women activists who had attempted to collect one million signatures against the anti-women laws in Iran. For over a decade, the women of Iran have been using every method of peaceful protest against Shar'ia law, the guiding law of the land, even though the protests were stopped every time they began. As Shar'ia applies to women, these laws restrict - in a draconian way - women's mobility and rights. For example, in Iran, the law oppresses women by such indignities as counting women's testimony as only half that of men, and by such barbarity as stoning women to death for adultery. So it is critical that these brave women prevail in their protest against such cruelty and backwardness. But instead of respectfully observing and noting the protests - like them or not - as politicians do in the United States, the Iranian regime arrested the protest leaders in raids to their homes at 5:00 a.m., beat them up and dragged them to Iranian prisons while all the roads to the planned demonstration location (and to the women) were blocked by paramilitary forces. Iranian women started by voting overwhelmingly for the Mullah Khatami in 1996 who promised them reform but, once he was elected, betrayed them. Since then, ...

Given the amount of media attention paid to Iran and its infamous president in recent weeks, we would do well to keep in mind that Ahmadinejad might not be in power for much longer: Around this time next year, the Islamic Republic will be holding presidential elections, and--according to some --the incumbent Ahmadinejad could suffer a loss at the polls. Who might step in to fill his shoes? According to an article this week from the Tehran Times , former president and reformist Mohammad Khatami is considering entering the race, and has started to garner domestic support for his campaign: Mohammad Khatami who was president from 1997 to 2004 has sent mixed signals about his willingness to run for the next year's presidential election. In a short interview with reporters he said "I have retired". However, in a recent visit to Oslo, Norway, he told reporters, "Unfortunately, in the political sphere there is no retirement ... When we can be active, we will be active."  -- James Martin ...

By:Reza Shafa The Iranian regime’s Air and Space Organization, part of its Ministry of Defense, along with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) unit responsible for the missiles program, are collaborating extensively and secretly in the field of missile technology transfer to Venezuela. The IRGC’s commanders even attended the June 2008 Venezuelan military exercise.During the past 5 years, the Iranian regime has established extensive military and political relations with Venezuela, with its investments in that country totaling roughly 10 billion dollar. Mullahs’ former president, Mohammad Khatami, and their current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have each traveled to Venezuela twice, while the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, has also reciprocated with his own trips to Tehran on a number of occasions. ...

This story cracks me up: An Iranian swimmer pulled out of the Olympic Games men's 100m breaststroke heats on Saturday, just minutes before he was due to compete against an Israeli rival. Mohammad Alirezaei's lane one was empty when the field left the starting blocks while Israel's Tom Beeri, starting in lane seven, finished fourth... During the 2004 Athens Olympics, Iran's judo world champion Arash Miresmaeili, one of the country's prominent gold medal hopes, refused to compete against Ehud Vaks of Israel in the first round out of solidarity for the Palestinian cause. Miresmaeili, twice a winner of the flyweight world title, still received a 5,000-dollar award the Iranian National Olympic Committee had promised to medal winners and he was hailed by former President Mohammad Khatami for his stance. By:Kazem KazerounianSource:American ChronicleThe fiasco of the clumsily forged Oxford doctoral diploma of the Iranian interior minister is comically tragic. Unfortunately for the interior Minister Ali Kordan, he will not be able to join the elite group of Dr. Ahmadinejad, Dr. Larijani, Dr. Khatami, Dr. Maleki, Dr. Rezaii, Dr. Motaki, Dr. Jajili and a thousand other officials with a PhD degree any time soon. Urban and Rural Councils are a clear manifestation of the democratic processes in Iran. President Khatami made the decision during his first term to finally reinstate the law and perform the nationwide elections in which more than 300,000 Iranians were elected in local councils paving way for the implementation of the Constitution and establishment of the basics of local government and decentralization. The current Government now however, sees the Councils as its rival and competes in limiting the authority of these locally elected bodies. According to legislation passed during the previous government, the state was obliged to delegate its local authority in municipal matters to the Councils , instead they are now narrowing the role and authority of these bodies. In the Tehran City Council we have decided to meet with the people in each district once a week. It is important for us to engage with the people at the local level and with the local authorities. In addition to a 15 person City Council , the Council has held district elections for more than 300 Friends of the Council Groups who are elected in each district for providing advice and oversight and connecting them with citizens at the local levels. This has proved to be a successful experience although there are still shortcomings and problems in terms of the authority delegated to them as well as their budget and plans. Along with some advisors and members of the Environment Comm ...

I'm reading a lot of Derrida and Spivak these days for my dissertation, which would be about voice and silence on the internet, based on my own personal experience in the past few years and the shift in my status in the Iranian diaspora blogosphere from the 'Blogfather' to the 'Public Enemy'. I also have this sketchy idea of defining the subaltern on the Internet. But I haven't given up the temptation to wrote a separate essay with this very sketchy idea of internet subaltern, based on the case of Fatemeh Rajabi, who is a pious woman, a pro-Ahmadinejad commentator and a persistent blogger with an unusually sharp language. She who also happens to be the wife of Gholam-Hossein Elham, the current government's spokesperson and the minister of Justice. My mains interest in her derives from the fact the because o f her sharp prose against Rafsanjani and Khatami, her blog has been filtered ( her older filtered blog ), her website attacked by 'hackers', and her Iranian web hosting provider has also kicked her out. She has also been the subject of terribly sexist and vicious personal attacks by the supporters of Rafsanjani in the from of serious or satirical comments, including the persistent erotic and sexist flow of bad jokes by Ebrahim (Ibrahim) Nabavi . All this, while she has totally been ignored by the loud advocates of free speech or even women's rights. ...
