The director of the public health department in Al Ain, UAE, has said coffee shops and other commercial establishments that encroach on streets and pavements without authorisation will attract fines ranging from Dhs200 to Dhs2,000 ($544) depending on the type of offence, reported Khaleej Times. Up to 27 tankers have been fined Dhs50,000 ($13,600) by the Dubai government for dumping raw sewage in the open, reported Khaleej Times. Abdul Majid Sifaee, director of the Drainage Network Department at the Dubai Municipality, said that apart from the fines, the cost of cleaning and flushing out the storm water lines would also have to be borne by the companies whose tankers were involved in the dumping. The municipality officials said that an area of around 150 metres near the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club had been affected due to sewage. On Saturday, officials from the Drainage and Irrigation Department had told Khaleej Times that the fines for the violators had been increased which were now between Dh50, 000 to Dh100,000. The ADIC-UBS Infrastructure Investment Fund is currently bidding for four multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects including the Aqaba Port Redevelopment in Jordan, an independent power and water plant in Saudi Arabia, a sewage treatment plant in Bahrain, and a schools project in Egypt, reported Khaleej Times.
