They couldn't get Tony, so they got his namesake: Boris Johnson told Sir Ian Blair yesterday that he wanted him gone, and twenty-four hours later he is history . David Blunkett has accused Sir Ian's political opponents (we assume that means the Tories, but also anyone else who opposed Sir Ian's liberal, inclusive approach which so flew in the face of police canteen culture) of "a long-running and now successful attempt to dislodge" him. Mr Blunkett adds that he hopes Sir Ian's successor will be "free from political interference and personal sniping." Ken Livingstone advised Sir Ian to tell Boris to get stuffed, claiming that the crime rate has come down and the clean-up rate has gone up every year under Sir Ian's watch, and expressing his concern that this will make the job of Met Commissioner "much more political." But the fact is that, with the Jean-Charles de Menezes affair, accusations of racism and allegations of corruption, Sir Ian was on the front pages for all the wrong reasons (was it the Mail wot done it?), there is more than enough of a smokescreen for Boris and co. to claim that this was NOT the culmination of a political vendetta.
