When she flashes those blue eyes, unleashes that 1,000-watt smile and lets loose that giggly, infectious Marion Ravenwood laugh, there's no mistaking it: It's Karen Allen, the spunky sweetheart of Raiders of the Lost Ark, plucked from semi-retirement by this year's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull like a ruby from a crown, back in Los Angeles to promote the sequel's DVD/Blu-ray release to a dining-room full of rapturous fanboy journalists. ...

Like millions of my fellow citizens, I have a bad back; I take prescription pain medications for it.   Three years ago, I had a long conversation with a doctor who, in addition to his clinical work, does research on chronic pain.   He told me that pain's effect on the brain is basically identical to the effect of aging, only accelerated.   Which suggests that there is some science behind one of my favorite movie lines--in the first Indiana Jones movie, Harrison Ford says to Karen Allen:   "It's not the years, honey; it's the mileage."   Experiences that traumatize the body play havoc with the mind.   Consequently, some of us are old beyond our years.   I certainly am.   Which leads me to John McCain's age.   McCain's body suffered horribly over an extended period, far more than mine and more than I imagine.   That might have a significant effect on McCain's mental acuity and flexibility, his ability to think through complex problems.   As a general matter, electing a 72-year-old President seems fine to me.   Healthy 72-year-olds are not as mentally sharp as when they were 40 or 50--on the other hand, they know more and have probably acquired more wisdom than most 40- or 50-year-olds.   The tradeoff seems reasonable.   But McCain is not a typical 72-year-old:   on the one hand, he's more talented than most (also more courageous); you don't reach the upper levels of American politics without substantial talents.   On the other hand, his ...

He's older and sporting a bit of grey, but Harrison Ford proves he can still deliver in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (Paramount, 2008, $39.99), which tops a stellar lineup of Blu-ray releases this week. It's the same kind of fast-paced thrill ride we enjoyed when Ford first donned the fedora in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) and followed that up with "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" (1984) and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989). Returning to work on the new outing are Steven Spielberg as director, George Lucas as writer/executive producer and John Williams with his exciting music score. This time, it's the Cold War 1950s and the Soviets are the dastardly enemies, led by the chillingly sinister Col. Dr. Irina Spalko, played with relish by Cate Blanchett. Jones is still a professor/archeologist and is still on the trail of rare artifacts. He heads to Peru in search of a mysterious skull. The Soviets also want it because they believe it possesses some mysterious power. Accompanying Jones on the journey is a rebel of a young man named Mutt Williams (Shia LeBouf) who wonders if the "old man" is really up to such a challenge. After Jones dispatches some of the bad guys in a terrific fight in a cave, the surprised Williams looks at Jones. "You're a teacher?" he says, wide-eyed. Also back from the original "Raiders" is Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood. The film is filled with hair-raising chases, ...

An illegal immigrant serving five life terms for the strangling deaths of his wife, three young daughters and a neighborhood girl apparently took his own life Thursday by hanging himself, authorities said. Simon Rios, 36, was found in his cell at the Pendleton Correctional Facility northeast of Indianapolis after noon Thursday, prison spokesman David Barr said. Rios was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later after guards and medical personnel couldn't revive him. There were no signs of foul play, Barr said. An autopsy was scheduled. Rios' attorney, Michelle Kraus, said he left a note requesting that his remains be returned to his native Mexico. "I'm very sad. I know he did a very evil thing, and he always knew he did a very evil thing. He always expressed remorse to me," Kraus said. The prosecutor in Rios' case said any remorse the man may have felt had little weight, given the heinous nature of his crimes. "I don't want anybody to ever lose sight that he is not a victim here," Allen County prosecutor Karen Richards said Thursday. "He killed his wife and four little girls. They are the victims here." On Dec. 8, 2005, Rios lured 10-year-old Alejandra Gutierrez, a former classmate of his eldest daughter, into his van as she waited at a school bus stop in Fort Wayne. Authorities say he raped and strangled her, then dumped her body in a gravel pit 50 miles away near Muncie. Five days after killing Alejandra but before her body was fo ...
