Long beloved by right-wingers for their devotion to monogamy, prairie voles may be getting around far more than previously thought. The animals, which inhabit American grasslands, have been touted as textbook examples of social monogamy . This reputation isn't undeserved. Since the 1960s, Lowell Getz and his colleagues at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign have documented the rodents' seemingly vanilla sex lives. One study of a population of wild prairie voles in Illinois found that more than half practice monogamy. Since then, the humble rodent has become the poster-child for monogamy research, and comparisons between prairie voles and their more promiscuous cousin species, meadow voles, have identified genes and chemicals believed to be important for monogamy and social bonding. But what if their monogomous reputation is undeserved and just a quirk of voles that live in Illinois? "No one has gone to survey other populations of prairie voles," said Karen Mabry, an ecologist at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, at the 12th meeting of the International Behavioral Ecology Congress in Ithaca, New York. To find out, Mabry compared prairie voles in two college Towns: Lawrence, Kansas and Bloomington, Indiana. The Illinois population has nearly gone extinct, Mabry said, and nearby Indiana offers a similar habitat: diverse grasslands that host clumps of vole nests. Kansas, on the other hand, is a monoculture grass, and nests ...

Designed for runners of all abilities, the 86-mile Market To Market relay race on October 11, is going to be a lot of fun. The endurance race will take up to 150 teams of six to eight persons from the Old Market in Omaha to the Haymarket in Lincoln and through small Towns, rural farms, downtown brick roads, state parks, over rivers and streams and across the plains. The race will be followed by a celebration in the Haymarket from 3:30 to 11:30 p.m. with live music, radio remotes, food and drinks. The race will be limited to 150 teams. Team registration is available at www.markettomarketrelay.com. “The 86-mile course is divided into legs of 2.45 to 5.5 miles. Each team selects a runner for three or four legs of the course,” according to Ben Cohoon, race director and founder. “Team distance running events are really becoming popular: Brew to Brew in Kansas, the Wild West Relay in Colorado and Hood to Coast in Oregon have become high profile events. My friends and I just wanted to share this fun idea with our home state. What makes these events so cool is that they combine the beauty of running with the competitive nature of team sports.” ...

Thomas Smicklas submits: Well, probably not a wife, but America's Car-Mart (CRMT) is one of those smaller ($225m cap) niche companies that knows how to creatively make a buck. America's Car-Mart was founded in 1981. It presently has 92 locations in Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and Texas. Car-Mart provides affordable used vehicles for the proletariat. With over 36,000 customers (many repeats, according to Car-Mart) this company has managed to maintain success by operating in smaller Towns, internally financing most of the vehicles it sells and fostering unique sales system that at times borders on barter. Josephine Arensdorf didn't talk much about it, but she was one of the last of her kind. She was a rider on an Orphan Train. From 1854 to 1930, an estimated 150,000-plus children were shipped from the East Coast to small frontier Towns on passenger trains that were nicknamed Orphan Trains. About 5,000 came to Kansas. ...

The fine folks at HOK say one of their top priorities is to design and build new ballparks that are unique and representative of the best parts of their own cities. With that in mind, it is the firm stance of this blog that Kansas City is one of the most underrated eating Towns in the country. I am unquestionably biased on this subject, but also bring a little expertise when it comes to eating. I'm not a boastful man, but eating is my gift. read more ...

We always love welcoming newcomers to our site, be they new members or visitors just stopping by. This week, there were several newcomers to our top lists, and as always, the destinations involved are as varied as IgoUgo members themselves. Surprisingly, Jamaica (pictured above) makes its first appearance over other popular destinations, while New Orleans has its first repeat performance with its second consecutive week as a top destination. Two journals take their introductory places on the list and, while new there, they are certainly not newcomers to the site. The first, Underground in Ellinwood, Kansas , dates from August 2000. The second, The Full Ekka Experience , is not exactly a spring chicken either, but covers the Impulse Travel destination featured on this week's Picks of the Week email newsletter. On the blog, two new posts about places that are certainly not new to IgoUgo members proved to be the most popular: Southern Towns Y'all Will Love and 10 Favorite Places to Kayak . The top photo this week portrays something that is probably new to most visitors to the site, which may be why it garnered so many views. After all, it's not every day that you come across a floor toilet . At least now, thanks to samepenny , you'll know how to use it the first time you try. Have a comment about this blog post? The Jonas Brothers have concerts almost in every state. That is including Nebraska. There are Towns in Kansas that are bigger than some of the Towns in Nebraska. I think we should get a concert in Kansas. On myspace, girls from Florida write a comment on JB's blog and they get extra concerts than what is already there. I think it's time we had some excitement in this state. ...

The mood in two Sumner County Towns this afternoon was noticeably mixed. Mulvane was celebratory. Horns honked. People waved. Some even hugged. "The golf course is going to be on my farm," said a jubilant Forrest Butts as he unboarded from a chartered bus. Some supporters of casino near Mulvane had joined Butts and taken the bus to Topeka to help convince state gaming board officials to vote in favor of a placing a casino nearest them. Four of seven board members voted for Harrah's, which had proposed building a casino on Exit 33 of the Kansas Turnpike, near Mulvane. The other two casino sites were near Wellington, where the mood was more subdued. ...

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks officials said today they have found zebra mussels in Marion Reservoir, about 60 miles northeast of Wichita. Zebra mussels are extremely prolific and are known to clog intake structures for water plants and outcompete native fish and mussel species for food. The Towns of Marion, Hillsboro and Peabody currently draw much of their water from Marion Reservoir. The mussels are expected to spread downstream and infect the rivers and reservoirs that provide water for numerous other Towns and the Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant. A single mussel was found at Marion by an angler Saturday. Wildlife officials found another mussel and mussel larvae Monday. ...

Spc. Ronnie A. Schmidt died in Iraq on Aug. 3, just two days before his 19th birthday. He was laid to rest with honor and reverence on Aug. 13. Our heartfelt thanks are extended to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Department, the Newton Police Department, and the Kansas Highway Patrol for escorting Ronnie on his final way home. Thanks to Newton Fire/EMS for their presence and respect. Thanks to all the law enforcement agencies in other Towns and counties for the traffic control. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion have provided so much help and assistance. We thank you for all your help, advice and support. You made difficult days a bit easier. To the Patriot Guard: You folks are awesome. Many of you were there when we received Ronnie’s remains at the airport. From that point on, you escorted Ronnie each step of the way. More than 300 Patriot Guard members were at the church, and many went to the burial in Eureka. All of you gave so much honor and respect to Ronnie and his family and friends. You will never know what your presence meant to all of us. You filled our hearts with love and pride. Thank you. It was a 75-mile drive to Eureka and all along the way people displayed flags and stood alongside the road with hands placed on their hearts. Most everyone stopped their vehicles and stood beside them with hats off, hands on their hearts. Some had made signs that honored Ronnie; others, young and old, waved flags. Veter ...

A family that helps fight cancer, a community volunteer, and the team behind the transfer of seven schools from the Kansas City to Indepedence School District are some of the honorees as Citizens of the Year. The annual awards are presented by the Truman Heartland Community Foundation at its Toast of the Towns gala, which will be Sept. 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City. After more legal hurdles were cleared this sum ...
