Would you deprive this man? Image from NBC Local NBC affiliate KXAN announced today that it may be taken off of Time Warner Cable's broadcast service in early October if current contract re-negotiations don't work out. The station, which has been around since the 1960s, is part of parent company LIN TV, which owns local stations around the country. Since most Austinites subscribe to Time Warner Cable service, this recent development could mean that many TV junkies will be left scrambling to keep up with the antics of their favorite small-screen characters, like Hiro Nakamura , Dwight Schrute , and Kenneth Parcell . There's also that big football game in February . In the hopes of getting more perspective on this scuffle, Austinist dashed off a few quick questions for Charlie Ray, Director of Digital Media at KXAN . Check out the Q&A below and after the jump. So why the riff between KXAN and Time Warner Cable? Is it about the analog-TV switchover, or bandwidth issues? Our dispute is about fair and equitable treatment. Time Warner charges its cable subscribers a fee to provide KXAN-TV in its channel line-up. It also charges its cable subscribers a fee to provide cable networks, which cable subscribers may or may not watch. Time Warner shares that fee with the cable networks; however, it does not share that fee with us. In essence, it takes our signal for free and resells it for a profit. Time Warner’s agreement to carry KXAN on its ...

As everyone predicted , KXAN has now been removed from Time Warner Cable's broadcast service after both parties were unable to reach an agreement by midnight last evening. The negotiations over the subscription fees that TWC pays to carry KXAN and other LIN-TV station signals are reported to still be underway, but for the immediate future Time Warner subscribers will need to seek alternate means of tuning into their favorite NBC shows. It's Bizarro-world economics to charge money for something that's available for free. Not unlike setting up a tent in one's backyard, charging admission and calling it an "oxygen booth." We heard KXAN's side of the story a few weeks ago. Eric Lassberg, General Manager of KXAN, wrote that the feud was about "fair and equitable treatment," and argued that "what [LIN-TV] are asking for, less than a penny a day per subscriber, is very reasonable." Today we're presenting our interview with Jeff Simmermon, Director of Digital Communications for Time Warner Cable , in the hopes of providing both perspectives on this ongoing—and very public—dispute. ( Full disclaimer: Simmermon was previously a freelance contributor to our sister site DCist several years ago ) We've heard KXAN/LIN-TV's side of the story. So what's TWC's position on this? Is LIN-TV asking for too much money? Absolutely. Broadcast signals have been free for the past 6 decades -- LIN TV is taking a free signal and charging for it without perf ...

Come midnight tomorrow, Time Warner Cable customers will probably need to seek alternative means of tuning into their favorite NBC shows. The communications giant and LIN-TV , which owns local NBC affiliate KXAN, have thus far failed to reach an amicable agreement in their ongoing dispute over the subscription fees that TWC pays to carry their signals. The current transmission contract is set to expire at midnight on Thursday, after which KXAN's feed will most likely be removed from Time Warner Cable's broadcast service. Austinist recently interviewed Eric Lassberg , General Manager at KXAN, who stressed that the "dispute is about fair and equitable treatment." "Time Warner charges its cable subscribers a fee to provide KXAN-TV in its channel line-up," he said. "It also charges its cable subscribers a fee to provide cable networks, which cable subscribers may or may not watch. Time Warner shares that fee with the cable networks; however, it does not share that fee with us. In essence, it takes our signal for free and resells it for a profit." Time Warner Cable did not respond to our requests for comment, though a representative told Austin360 TV guru Diane Holloway that the company was "doing everything we can for this not to happen," and that there were "no winners in this situation." Clearly, both sides stand to lose considerably should the breakup happen — KXAN derives approximately half of its viewership from TWC, while the l ...

My daughter lives in the Austin, TX area and can no longer watch Oprah because Time Warner Cable will not pay KXAN for using their airwaves! This is an outrage! All the money customers pay for cable and they can't even get a local channel. There are many NBC affiliates around the country that have this problem - not all may provide Oprah but I'm sure more than just Austin, TX won't be able to watch Oprah. I was hoping maybe Oprah can help! Please help! Thanks, Maureen in Houston, Texas ...
