Use these nine tips to help save some of the 100 million trees chopped down annually to produce Junk Mail in the United States: Register your name with the Direct Marketing Association's Mail Preference Service . After you do this, the DMA will add you to its "Do Not Mail" database. If you do business with a company via Mail services, it will put you on its contact list. So the first time you make a transaction (such as placing an order) with that company, ask to be put on its "in-house suppress" or "do not promote" lists. Tell the company not to "rent" or share your name with other companies. To stop Junk Mail from credit card, mortgage, and insurance companies, try going to OptOutPreScreen.com which allows you to remove your name from lists generated by the four major credit bureaus-- Equifax, Innovis, TransUnion, and Experian. Get the Stop the Junk Mail Kit from the Consumer Research Institute. This kit comes with pre-addressed postcards for you to send to companies that send you those annoying catalogs, wasteful postcards, and unnecessary brochures. Several subscription services will reduce your Junk Mail for you. You can pay a fee to join Stop the Junk Mail which offers an online service to reduce Junk Mail. Also, check out GreenDimes - for a dime a day, this service will reduce your Junk Mail and plant a tree in your name every month. If you're fed up with other types of Junk (faxes, email, phone calls, etc.), take a look at Junk ...

So, most of us are not fans of Junk Mail. At least, the bulk of them anyway. Especially not the online variety that we call spam. Admittedly, though, I do still go through some of the Junk Mail that go in to my letterbox. Not all the time. But, I occasionally rummage through the pile, [...] ...

Does this bother anyone else? It seems like I get even more Junk/cr*p Mail from AMEX than all my other card issuers combined. From other card issuers I get those ubiquitous convenience cheques (despite requesting not to get them) and an occasional usage campaign but not much else. I seem to get Mail from AMEX at least every other day from sweepstakes, publishing offers, offers to sell me other stuff, trying to get me to revolve a balance by offering bonus points, etc. I have good solid credit, have never carried a credit card balance, and never responded to any of the stupid offers. I have the Gold card. I'm going to be cancelling my card as soon as the annual fee comes due (gotta redeem those MR points first) and the copious Junk Mail is one of the reasons. ...

Filed under: Internet , E-Mail , Web services , Beta , web 2.0 If you've ever bought anything online you know that there's no such thing as a simple, one-time transaction. Once you give an online retailer your email address there's a good chance you'll continue to get emails letting you know about other items the company would like you to buy, coupons, or sales until the day you die (or opt out of these email messages, whichever comes first). And that's if you're lucky. There's also a chance that your email address will be sold to marketers and you'll start getting messages from dozens of companies you've never done business with at all. There are a bunch of services that provide you with disposable email addresses that disappear after a few hours or days. You can use these services to create a temporary email address to sign up for a new web service or purchase an item online. But you need to sign up over and over again every time you need an email address. OtherInbox simplifies the process by letting you register for a single account which comes with a virtually unlimited number of email addresses. Here's how it works. You register for a free account and you're assigned a custom domain like username.otherinbox.com. Any time an email is sent to any address ending with @username.otherinbox.com it will show up in your inbox. Messages will automatically be sorted into folders based on the address they're sent to. Have you ever considered how much wasted energy and resources your mailbox witnesses and must manage? It's an absolute powder keg of used energy and resources. According to the U.S. Postal Service, annually it delivers more than 90 billion pieces of direct marketing — including advertising and other promotions. All this unwanted Mail accounts for more than 4 million or 5 million tons of solid waste, depending on the source cited. ...

Seven's Sunrise site offers a list of hints on how to cut down on physical Junk Mail . The suggestions tend to the obvious, but there's contact numbers for getting off at least some mailing lists. Another useful option a relative of mine used was to return any unsolicited offers for credit cards and the like in the enclosed reply-paid envelope, pushing up the costs for the Junk Mail sender. If you've got extra hints for cutting down Junk Mail, let's hear them in the comments. Junk Mail - how to stop the papers trail [Sunrise] ...
