clipped by: Lexica clipper's remarks: From a statement by Gwendolyn Alexander, President of the African American Historical Society of Alaska and Alaska Juneteenth Celebration Clip Source: electronicvillage.blogspot.com "As for Governor Sarah Palin's involvement in the African American community, the Governor's office hasn't participated in any of our Alaska Juneteenth Events. All previous Alaskan Governor's have traditionally attended and participated in our annual Juneteenth Celebration. Gov. Palin was the first governor not to send out a congratulatory letter or assist us in any way with our Juneteenth activities. I didn't have the courtesy of receiving a reply when I asked for a representative from the Governor's office to come and speak at our Juneteenth Celebration if Governor Palin was unable to attend. While meeting with Black leaders concerning the absence of any African Americans on her staff, Gov. Palin responded that she doesn't have to hire any Blacks and was not intending to hire any. The GOP Borg and their drones are drooling over the fact that Sarah Palin was a beauty queen back in the day who competed in the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant. While surfing The Net I pondered an interesting thought. Being the pageant junkie I am, I was struck by the notion that the Rethuglicans and the Right Wing Noise Machine would have been crowing nonstop about the fact if she'd won. Why aren't they? Turns out Sarah Get Your Gun didn't win back in 1984, she was the runner up. Wanna guess who she lost to? A sistah. In a state that has a 3.7% African-American population, she lost to an African-American woman, No wonder Idaho-born Caribou Barbie's hatin' on us . Yes peeps, there are Black people who live in Alaska. Some came there to work on the Alaska pipeline back in the 70's and stayed. Others were assigned there during the course of their military service and grew to love the state. Others moved there from the Lower 48 to get a fresh start in life. There is a large enough community of African-Americans there to hold their own Juneteenth Celebration and elect Bettye Davis to the Alaska Senate. In some delicious irony Palin lost that pageant to Maryline Blackburn , an Army brat who was born in Europe, grew up in Fairbanks and became the first African-American to win Miss Alaska and represent the state in the Miss America pageant. Ms. Blackburn is an accomplished singer now based in the ATL and Obama supporter. She also had some interesti ...

Much props and respect to Electronic Village for this article posted on his blog this morning. This is a question I have been pondering for quite some time. What is Gov. Sarah Palin's relationship with blacks in Alaska? Geez, as a Vice President, should McCain win in the Fall, you would expect someone who represents all people in America. Not like Dick Cheney, who voted against Martin Luther King Jr. day, as did John McCain. We are not looking for a handout from anyone, but to be treated fairly and with respect. I wonder where Sarah Palin stands on civil rights and issues affecting blacks in her state and dare I say, America? Take a look at the statement issued by Gwendolyn Alexander below and judge for yourself..... "As for Governor Sarah Palin's involvement in the African American community, the Governor's office hasn't participated in any of our Alaska Juneteenth Events. If family is the root of Black culture, as Ebony surmised in 2002   , then family reunions strengthen those roots. With a goal of preserving the family, Black family reunions have become very popular over the past decade, and many families look forward to Juneteenth as a time to reconnect. Parades, barbecues, fishing and baseball are traditional Juneteenth activities   , but the holiday is traditionally focused on education and self improvement — speakers are brought in, and elders recount events of the past. A true Juneteenth Celebration leaves families and friends heart-warmed from a day of fellowship and proud of a rich history of struggle and achievement. These days, Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom, family, education and community. There are many ways to celebrate   : from an outdoor cookout with traditional foods, to a special family gathering in the home. To learn how Juneteenth celebrations have endured and evolved, start with a reading of its history   . Plan a special event, and gather the family to acknowledge the importance of the holiday. Discuss your family's history. It is important to build a connection to your past. Separation is a fact of African American history, so genealogy is more than a hobby — it is the search for identity and the establishment of legacies. Alex Haley said   , "In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage, to know who we are and where we have come from. Without ...

I don't know if Sarah Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party . I do know that she and her husband seem real cozy with this crew. Check out this video: Villagers, we need to take a close look at any political candidate that would support the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) founded by a man who said , " I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions. " The same man, AIP founder Joe Vogler, also said , "[T]he fires of Hell are glaciers compared to my hate for the American government." John McCain likes to claim that Republicans are the 'Party of Abraham Lincoln' ... yet, he placed a woman on his ticket who associates with a group that wants to secede from the Union. Ain't that what President Lincoln fought against with all of his heart and soul? Finally, villagers, it is worth noting that Sarah Palin made time to greet the folks at this AIP conference, however, she couldn't find time to support or greet the folks at the Alaska Juneteenth Celebration earlier this year. She finds time for white extremists, however, she can't find time for Celebration of a Black cultural holiday. What does that say about her thoughts on diversity and equal opportunity for people of color in our nation? ...

I HEARD THAT SF Juneteenth weekend Celebration went off very well in Civic Center! Missed the action! June 19th, the official date Juneteenth is celebrated in Texas, a tradition that followed the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation to slaves in Texas by General Gordon Granger, June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, stating the good news they were free! And after 141 years, in many Cities. So happen June 19 I left town via Southwest Airlines for Lubbock, Texas to visit my son Jay Metcalfe for a few days, and where I had the opportunity to take in Juneteenth Texas style. There was a week long Celebration that culminated on June 21 at Simpson Community Center Parkway in the Black neighborhood. The 29th Annual Lubbock Emancipation Juneteenth Parade began 10a.m. started from United Supermarket (a big chain) that saw riders on horses, floats, in cars; many young people participated in the proud event, coordinated by the Parkway Cherry Point Neighborhood Association’s Senior Citizens Committee lead by President Tina Betts. ...
