AP - Julio Franco finally called it quits. ... Source: rangersblog.dallasnews.com --- 17 days ago
The top of the Rangers lineup has punished AL pitching all year. The league figured it might be nice of them to do that to NL pitchers in the All-Star game. The first four hitters in the Rangers' lineup were selected Sunday for the July 15 game at Yankee Stadium in New York: 2B Ian Kinsler, SS Michael Young, CF Josh Hamilton and DH Milton Bradley. Hamilton will start. The others were all selected as backups by the platers. The Rangers have had as many as four players chosen for the team on five previous occasions. The club sent a team-record of five players to the 2004 game in Houston. A look at the quartet after the jump: • CF Josh Hamilton: Hamilton, 27, will start, but probably in right field. No Ranger has ever played center field in the All-Star Game and with Ichiro Suzuki on the team, it's not likely that Hamilton will break that streak. Hamilton entered Sunday leading the majors in RBIs with 83, the second highest total by a Ranger before the All-Star game. He added to that total with a run-scoring single in the third. After leading the AL in home runs for most of the season, a recent lull dropped him into a tie for second with 19. He also ranked fifth in slugging (.544), eighth in on-base-plus slugging (.912). • 2B Ian Kinsler: Kinsler, 26, becomes the third Rangers second baseman to make the team following Julio Franco (1989-91) and Alfonso Soriano (2004-05). He has his work cut out for him in matching their All-Star ac ... Source: www.postchronicle.com --- 80 days ago
Julio Franco, the oldest man ever to appear in a major league baseball game, has announced his retirement. ... ... Source: deadspin.com --- 60 days ago
One wouldn't think that this would be classified as "news," necessarily, but we still find it noteworthy, and kind of sad: Julio Franco has officially announced his retirement . Well, we think so, anyway; the story has only been reported by the official site of the Mexican League, where Franco had been peddling his wares. And it's all in Spanish. We tried translating it through Babelfish, but that wasn't much help. This Wednesday at the end of the second game of the series of Tigers in front of Oil tankers, the Dominican Frank Julio definitively announced to the feline director his retirement to him like active player. After analyzing the situation with the family, the Dominican one ends a trajectory of 26 years like player in where it harvested I title of batting with the Rangers of Texas, more valuable player of American Liga in the 90, three star games and two titles of batting in Mexico. We think that's probably a retirement story, though we're not sure what the "feline" part has to do with anything. Anyway, he will be missed, and we will be quite disappointed if he doesn't try a comeback in five years. Julio Franco anunció su retiro [Mexican League] ... Source: deadspin.com --- 60 days ago
How long has Mets octogeniarian Julio Franco been around? So long that his career actually spans the whole era of video game baseball. From the Atari 2600 to Bases Loaded to MLB 06, Franco has been around for all of it. The great minds at Progressive Boink — those responsible for the genius that is The Dugout , which provides us with pretty much the first belly laugh we have, every day — has put together a retrospective of Franco's career, set to all your favorite video game baseball hits of the '80s, '90s and today. Want to know how Julio got his start? He describes life in 1986, with RBI Baseball. "I don't know, I just didn't take care of myself," he confesses. "I gained weight big-time. Fans used to point at me and be like, 'Hey, isn't that the cartoon astronaut from the opening credits of Reading Rainbow?' It hurt a lot." The whole retrospective ends with a stirring video of Franco homering off video Mark Prior, to some damn stirring tunes, if we so say ourselves. Go read this, then read The Dugout , and come back in an hour or so. We'll still be here, happy to wait. The Dugout [Progressive Boink] Julio Franco, A Life In Pictures [Progressive Boink] ... Unless you are a hardcore baseball fan, you probably will not remember Julio Franco all that well. You certainly will not remember him as a member of the Quintana Roo Tigers, the Mexican League team that he played for before announcing his retirement on Wednesday. Franco's retirement age: 49. But there are several reasons to remember Franco, not all of which paint him as merely an age-defying novelty act. At the very normal age of 33, Franco hit .341 in 1991 to win the American League hitting title as a Texas Ranger. Franco also played in the Japanese League — for two separate stints — and successfully came back to the Major Leagues each time. After his second tour with Japan's Chiba Lotte Marines, he even played in South Korea and Mexico before returning to the U.S. unheard-of territory for a major-leaguer. He also batted better than .400 twice in the Mexican League, and had 4,229 hits in his professional career, including minor-league and international play. But, let's face it: The world does not remember many players who fail to get to 3,000 major-league hits; or 200 career home runs; or finish with a lifetime batting average under .300. Franco simply did some things that made a mockery of what baseball players are supposed to be able to do. Franco faced a pitcher who faced Ted Williams. Jim Kaat walked Franco in 1982, Franco's rookie season. Kaat pitched to Williams in 1959. Franco became the oldest regularly playing ... Source: blog.baseballdigestdaily.com --- 79 days ago

I feel that this organization has just jumped back to the days of Jim Duquette and Art howe. All the good will that came with Willie and omar's arrival has now faded away and this organization has been left in a cloud darker then the one that preceeded it. Here are just a couple of ranting: 1) What free Agent in their right mind would CHOOSE to sign here? If I were a free agent, I would most certainly use the Mets to up my bargaining position, but I would not sign here unless it was for absurdly more money than anyone else. Watching this front office run around like the Keystone Cops over the past couple of months...in the public eye...has tainted the organization teribly...and know one knows this more than the players and agents. Look at how the stock of players like Reyes, Delgado, Beltran and even Wright has fallen. Would you want to be a part of that? Further more, with all of this dirty laundry being public, there is no escaping it until, ultimately this team is sold. I harken back to Tom Glavine who tried to reneg on his deal with the Mets hours after he signed it...it is going to be more of that in the future. 2. The Mets have shown themselves to be a racist organization. There is no suger coating it. Omar Minaya has been permitted to run rough shot through the org chart and the "sparing" of Sandy Alomar has got to be the biggest joke this side of Julio Franco. What non-Hispanic player, coach, Manager, front office employee wou ... Source: www.lonestarball.com --- 27 days ago
