I have often declared in this space that I have led a privileged life. Don of West 87th Street, the Wisest of Men, once made me aware that this was the case from an early age. He had bemoaned that he grew up in an underprivileged home. I noted that my family was by no definition rich. “But you grew up in a house with books,” he retorted. Hence, his nickname, “Wisest of Men.” My sense of privilege was especially keen last night. Months ago, I had made arrangements with Bruce Pomahac, who heads the archives of Rodgers and Hammerstein Inc., to have a long awaited dinner. Last week he called to say that his boss Ted Chapin insisted he had to come to Philadelphia the night of our dinner but that I could come too. The occasion was an outdoor concert at the Mann Center by Julie Andrews, who is -- miraculously -- regaining her voice. As if the concert were not special enough, we would be driving down to Philadelphia in Ted's van (with me as a hapless navigator) with Julie's former husband, the great designer Tony Walton, and his current wife, Gen LeRoy. (Their beautiful, savvy granddaughter Georgia was also with us, as was Michael Vannoni of the Rodgers and Hammerstein office.) The drive to and from Philadelphia was in its own way as exciting as the concert because Tony, who began his career designing a Noel Coward show 60 years ago, is one of New York’s great raconteurs and has a wealth of stories from his extraordinary career. Wise-cracking neurosis is about as alien as devout Buddhism to Maria, the fresh-faced novice nun in The Sound of Music. It's the very air she breathes to Sonia Walsk, the kooky New York Jewish lyricist who is the heroine of the 1979 musical They're Playing Our Song. In an effort to prove that she's not a one-trick pony, Connie Fisher - the viewers' choice on the original casting-by-TV talent show - has now graduated from the first role to the second. Fiona Laird's production at the Menier Chocolate Factory suggests that this was not such a brilliant idea. Picture Julie Andrews attempting to impersonate Barbra Streisand - well, it's by no means as bad as that but let's just say it's on that kind of spectrum. ... Source: www.philly.com --- 26 days ago
Once a humble, holiday-time advertising slogan, "The Gift of Music" is now the title of a new Julie Andrews show testing its artistic and commercial viability - not to mention its star's injured but recovering vocal cords - at a handful of summer-concert venues. Cependant, [...] ... DeKalb County school board member Elizabeth Andrews, one of the longest-serving school board members in Georgia, died late Wednesday afternoon . ....or fuck buddy? John McCain, using the touchy-feely language usually associated with Match.com ads, described his vice presidential pick Sarah Palin as "a partner and soul mate," though to his credit he neglected to call her the wind beneath his sails and sigh, "She completes me." But it doesn't take a Sherlock to deduce from this video (courtesy of The Jed Report), which shows McCain Freudian-fiddling with his wedding ring as he glances sidelong at his running (soul_mate, that his unconscious longs to sack the Republican Party's earthmother savior in the end zone, if I may borrow a football metaphor in honor of the upcoming NFL season. This vignette, where the subtext reveals itself through obsessive reviewing as in a De Palma film (with Julie Andrews' cool trill deployed as ironic counterpoint), is worryingly reminiscent of AMC's Mad Men, where alpha male Don Draper, though married to a cool picture-perfect blonde desirous to please him, loosens his tie and undoes his shoe laces for one saucy brunette after another, risking everything for a randy bite of the forbidden apple. Given Sarah Palin's handiness with a hunting rifle, it would be tragic indeed for her to "mistake" Cindy McCain for a rampaging caribou on the campaign trail--it would give rise to all kinds of suspicions, perhaps plunging even Peggy Noonan into a crisis of faith. ... Question: How many minutes of advertising in one hour of TV? Answer: If you are talking about prime-time, commercial broadcast television, an hour usually includes about 42 minutes of program and 18 minutes of commercials and promotional items. The number can vary in other parts of the day and on other program services; I've seen cable shows with about 20 minutes of commercials in an hour. And I am not counting a couple of other forms of advertising: graphics promoting other shows that fill part of the screen while you're watching a program, and product placement, in which items are included in a program itself in exchange for a fee. Q: I remember a version of "Cinderella" coming on television when I was young (probably around the early 1970s). It seems like it came on once a year, and I'd like to find out which version of "Cinderella" that was. I looked online but I don't remember who starred in it - there is one with Lesley Ann Warren and another with Julie Andrews and I don't know if it was either of these. A: There have been many, many versions of "Cinderella," including three based on the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical: a 1957 production with Julie Andrews, a 1965 one with Lesley Ann Warren and a 1997 telecast with Brandy. The Warren one was often repeated, so I suspect that is the one you saw. And it is on DVD, if you want to see it again. ... Source: www.myrtlebeachonline.com --- 24 days ago
"She is a bright, talented actress," Noel Coward once wrote of Julie Andrews, "and quite attractive since she dealt with her monstrous English overbite." Pure Coward - except that it isn't. Banged out on an old Olympia typewriter in 1991, this quote was invented by Lee Israel. During an improbable crime spree lasting approximately 18 months, Israel impersonated not just Coward but also Fanny Brice, Dorothy Parker, Lillian Hellman, Louise Brooks, Humphrey Bogart, and a host of other major and minor celebrities (all long dead) in over 400 phony letters. Israel made only a modest living through her misdeeds, but she fooled a lot of people, experts and scholars among them. The Julie Andrews line wound up appearing in a book of Coward's collected correspondence. ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 19 days ago

John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants shared some interesting picks for children's music with the NY Times [not his own, though they do get a few obligatory plugs]. References run from the Shaggs to Julie Andrews, but this comment at the end about what his friends' kids listen to seems the most insightful: I know one kid who when he was 4 only liked the Ramones. My friend's 4-year-old daughter constantly requests "the angry song" from Dreamgirls ("And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"). Another friend's kid is only into music that is robotic, like Daft Punk and Kraftwerk. Kids will all grow up to reveal why their obsessions seem so specific. It's pathetic how out of touch I am on kids music. Playlist | He Might Be Giant, but He Knows Children's Music [nyt] ... Find more results for Julie Andrews on RSSMicro.com |
