Filed under: Culture , Features , Microsoft Xbox 360 , Interviews , Business Marty O'Donnell caused something of an uproar recently following controversial comments aimed at used video game sales. In particular, it was the Bungie audio director's apparent assertion that content creators and publishers "shouldn't stop receiving income from further sales" that served as the biggest sticking point; after all, why should the game industry be given special treatment beyond the initial point of sale? Not long ago we had the opportunity to have a candid conersation with O'Donnell on this topic, during which he clarified his stance, and stated that while he doesn't feel games represent a "special category," he believes that "digital content is creating a crisis for the economic model of new and existing mediums." He agreed to go on the record, "even though I've had a few drinks!" We quizzed him about how he thinks it'll do against Rock Band , his feelings now that it's all over, and what's next for Neversoft and the world of musical games. Filed under: Retro , Microsoft Xbox 360 , Action , Driving , Interviews After a number of false starts, the re-imagining of Luxoflux's late-90s car combat title, Vigilante 8 , finally crashed headlong into Xbox Live Arcade, a release that has so far been met with both rubbernecking and a handful of mixed reviews . Peter Morawiec, creative director at Vigilante 8: Arcade developer Isopod Labs, tells us that this has something to do with the game's perception by the media. "Car-combat will not always appeal to everyone," explained Morawiec . "Plus, seems some reviewers are judging the game as if it were a full blown, full-priced release (yet it costs less than a price of a meal)." Isopod Labs was co-founded by Peter Morawiec and Adrian Stephens, the same two individuals behind Luxoflux, in January 2007. Vigilante 8: Arcade represents the studio's first title, and on the heels of the game's debut we cornered one half of the founding duo in Adrian Stephens to speak more in-depth about his company and why it was important to the team to revisit their past. Filed under: Features , Microsoft Xbox 360 , First Person Shooters , Interviews Recently, Bungie Studios community director Brian Jarrard - better known to Halo fans as "Sketch" - took some time to clear up a few lingering questions about Halo 3: Recon and Halo 3 's upcoming Mythic Map Pack as well as some general Bungie topics. From our informal chat, we learn that Halo 3: Recon will stay relatively true to Halo 3 's formula, meaning that we won't be seeing any game engine improvements or added features. But Jarrard did confirm that (at minimum) one new weapon will make an appearance in Recon and a new soundtrack will debut. We also touch on the topic of Recon 's Forge, learning what it is not and discuss why Bungie chose to not make it as feature-rich as a map editor like, say, what Far Cry 2 has to offer . There's Vidmaster achievement and Mythic Map Pack talk as well and the conversation somehow leads to the topic of global domination and pie. Filed under: Features , PC , Adventure , Puzzle , Interviews Everyone loves pie, and this year's IndieCade International Festival made our favorite delicious pastry even better, marrying it with time travel in The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom , one of the event's more interesting finalists. A product of late night brainstorming and drawing more than a little inspiration from silent film, the game offers an unique blend of platforming and puzzle solving as players guide the mischievous Winterbottom on his single-minded quest for more pie. We recently jumped at the opportunity to speak with the game's creator, Matt Korba, and over the course of the Interview we picked his brain on a variety of topics, from the title's origin as a thesis project to similarities with fellow indie time travel experiment, Braid . And of course, pie. Filed under: Culture , Interviews , Rhythm Tommy Tallarico has been working in the video game industry since 1991, and has worked on the audio and music for over 250 games, which sounds exhausting enough. He also ocassionally co-hosts Reviews on the Run (formerly Judgement Day on G4), he's a co-founder of the Game Audio Network Guild , serves on the advisory board for the Game Developers Conference, and somewhere amidst that schedule he found time to co-create (with game composer Jack Wall) the live-action game music experience that is Video Games Live. Video Games Live has been bringing the rocking tunes of games to audiences around the world for three years now. Whereas Jack Wall provides the baton-waving, classy dress portion of the show, Tallarico is the tennis-shoe wearing, Spider-Man guitar-wielding rock element. Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3 , Microsoft Xbox 360 , Action , Adventure Following our recent hands-on with the soon-to-be-released Prince of Persia , we sat down with series producer, Ben Mattes, to chat about how (and why) this new installment - and, in some respects, direction - for the iconic franchise came to be. Mattes wasn't afraid to cite his team's influences for the project, nor to lavish praise on the competition. He spoke about what wasn't quite right with follow-ups to the acclaimed Sands of Time and how, in a variety of ways, Ubisoft Montreal tried (and sometimes failed) to nail it this time around. Re-creating Guitar Hero - like Zen in the platforming? He thinks that worked. Read on for Mattes' insight into the game's creation; early hurdles (and lessons learned); the new prince (and what people think of him); and designing combat that doesn't try to compete where, in his words, God of War has already "won." %Gallery-23908% Continue reading Joystiq Interview: Prince of Persia producer Ben Mattes Joystiq Interview: Prince of Persia producer Ben Mattes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 08:00:00 EST. Filed under: Sony PlayStation 2 , Sony PlayStation 3 , Retro , RPGs While the prospect of ever seeing an official, localized release of Persona 2: Innocent Sin remains bleak, those who missed the second chapter, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment , when it was first released on PlayStation (yes, PS1) eight years ago, now have a second, albeit seriously limited chance to score a copy of the reprint. Bet you never thought you'd be buying a brand new (and full-priced!) PS1 game again, did you? To commemorate the December 9th release of Persona 4 , Atlus has announced an "ultra limited" reprint of Persona 2 , including a bonus disc featuring the trailer and video Interview with the developers, to be sold exclusively through Amazon.com and Amazon.ca. Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360 , Action Rockstar Games' Dan Houser isn't positive that the exclusive Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable content for Xbox 360 will make a 2008 release. In an Interview with Variety , when asked directly if he expects the DLC to release this year, the Don of GTA fesses up he's "not sure" and hopes to announce a release date in the next few weeks. Despite Microsoft's reassurances , a delay to early next year wouldn't be wholly unexpected, with the rumor mill spewing forth a January or February release date. Filed under: Nintendo Wii , Business Gamasutra has a post-TGS Interview with Tecmo's now Itagaki-less Team Ninja, in which the reign-holder of such franchises as Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive pretty much shrugs off any remaining traces of platform-exclusivity. In fact, it may even develop for Wii. Yosuke Hayashi, director of Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PS3 (a game Itagaki didn't, er, particularly care for ), discussed the studio's intent to create a brand new audience on top of its existing one, saying that, "If that lends to one console - PS3, or if that's going to be the Wii - that's just the direction we will go." Hayashi further clarified the approach Team Ninja will take to choosing platforms for its titles going forward, saying, "It really depends on the audience and what we want to deliver, in order to make the most entertaining content." Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3 Microsoft has been relentless in their pursuit of exclusivity rights for the downloadable content for some of the biggest games of the year -- Grand Theft Auto IV , of course, being chief among them . Other than a vague comment from SCEE president David Reeves, who hinted in May that extra content for GTA IV would "probably" be coming to the PS3, we've not heard much contention from Sony's higher-ups over Microsoft's stranglehold on the DLC of these third-party blockbusters. This silence was recently broken by Sony UK managing director Ray Maguire, who, in an Interview with VideoGamer.com , stated, "nothing is ever exclusive." Maguire explained that while the competition had spent "a large amount of money" to purchase exclusive DLC rights for "a period of time", Sony had chosen to funnel their money into research and development, as well as the production of titles such as LittleBigPlanet . His statements certainly seem to hint at the possibility of 360-exclusive DLC eventually finding its way onto the PS3 -- though considering the kind of green Microsoft dishes out to secure said DLC, we'd be surprised if it happened anytime soon. Filed under: Business Mortal Kombat creator (kreator?) Ed Boon has come forward, labeling recent reports of Midway's Chicago branch handing out pink slips to many of the individuals who worked on Mortal Kombat vs. DC as "completely false." Last week, numerous outlets reported that the troubled publisher and developer let go of around 20 to 30 employees following the completion of both the recent cross-universe brawler and Blitz: The League II . However, speaking in an Interview with GameDaily, Boon asserts that the Mortal Kombat team specifically is still together, and is already brainstorming on what to work on next. He adds that the crew is sizing up Mortal Kombat vs. DC 's performance, as "it will have a good amount to do with what features we put in the next game." Of course, this says nothing of those in The Windy City who worked specifically on Midway's sequel to Blitz , or if the company decided to have them go long all the way to the unemployment line. Filed under: Nintendo Wii , Exergaming We picked up Nintendo's wildly popular digital personal trainer, Wii Fit , shortly after launch with hopes to transform ourselves into Hasslehoffian dreamboats -- sadly, we found the Balance Board's unflinching critique of our porcine physiques far too traumatizing . Fortunately, according to an article in the latest issue of Men's Fitness, Electronic Arts is hard at work on their own fitness title for the Wii -- one that will use a brand new (and hopefully less judgmental) peripheral. This isn't the first we've heard of EA's answer to Wii Fit -- though details on the new peripheral (and the apparent eschewing of the game's use of the Balance Board) is news to us. According to the magazine's Interview with EA executive producer Dave McCarthy, the aforementioned peripheral will allow players to attach the Wiimote to their body, where it will measure their movements during a series of in-game exercises. No details on a release schedule for the game, or its capacity to make us openly weep, were mentioned. Rumor: EA still working on fitness title for Wii, includes new peripheral originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 12:00:00 EST. Filed under: Culture , Action The video we're referring to isn't embeddable, so we're afraid this is one of those old-fashioned, " go check out this thing on the internet " posts. The buxom thing in question is a deliciously awkward Interview with official Lara Croft impersonator, Alison Carroll . Shortly after confirming that Lara Croft is indeed an archaeologist, the lithe leading lady flounders and grows visibly annoyed upon being asked, "When did they find the Tomb of Tutankhamun?" Of course, rather than humor the interviewer (1922, by the way) and risk making a fictional video game character look bad , Ms. Carroll summons her caretaker to shut down the pesky journalist.
