Okay, I know this isn't exactly breaking news, but I thought many of you would be interested to know that Jose Theodore is on the ice right now taking part in his first informal practice of the summer at KCI. Except for a practice here as a member of the Avs last season, this is Theodore's first time on the "Capitals" rink. Theodore and Brent Johnson are splitting time at one end of the ice, taking shots from Boyd Gordon, Chevy Chase native Stephen Werner, Florida forward David Booth and some guy who looks like David Booth (who came out last summer). So to recap, that would be two goalies, from the same team, on the ice in mid-August. That's not something you see very often. And in case you are wondering, Theodore's Washington gear hasn't arrived yet, so he's still wearing his Colorado mask and pads. I hope to ...

Can't wait for the start of training camp? Well, you don't have to. Get your late summer hockey fix at KCI starting Tuesday as several of the Caps' North American players gather for daily informal skates. Based on the dressing room stalls that had jerseys hanging in them this morning, it looks like the team's equipment managers are expecting Chris Clark, Boyd Gordon, Brent Johnson, Jose Theodore, Shaone Morrisonn, Donald Brashear, Matt Bradley and possibly another player or two join the skates. This week Clark, Gordon and Johnson skated 10-11:30ish, and I'm guessing that won't change. If it does, I'll post an update. Also, I noticed that Brian Pothier's equipment was also hanging in a stall, suggesting to me that he might have skated recently. No one I spoke to today had seen him, though, and his agent won't return my phone calls. On another subject, I've been keeping tabs ...

Continuing on with my preview of the Northwest division with the Colorado Avalanche  Colorado is definitely an underdog in the Northwest, and one of those reasons is the goaltending. While the other 4 teams seem to have rather stable goaltending, Colorado has a tandem of Peter Budaj and Andrew Raycroft, two goalies who still have to prove they belong in the Pro's. Budaj is the favorite for the number 1, as two years ago he started 57 games for the Avalanche, posting a respectable 2.68 goals against average and .905 save percentage while winning 31 games. Last year, he lost the starting job to Jose Theodore, and only played 35 games, posting a 2.57 goals against average and .903 save percentage. He still has to prove he can play at a consistent level, however, for him to become a legitimate number one. A Toronto outcast, Raycroft has been on a decline since winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the leagues best rookie in 2004. Raycroft hasn't had a save percentage on the good side of .900 since then, and seems to be lost. Maybe the change of scenery, along with the motivation to show everyone he belongs, could lead to his resurgence. Or he can crash and burn like he has the last three years. Defensively, the Avalanche seem to be alright, with defensive stalwarts Adam Foote and Scott Hannan to go along with offensive defensemen John-Micheal Liles and Jordan Leopold.
