Let me preface this by saying that I am a big fan of Jorge Posada, was an advocate of the Yankees signing him in the offseason (and still am), and believe he still has some very good years left. Now, with that said, Posada going on the DL, and possibly having season-ending shoulder surgery could be the best thing for the New York Yankees at this time. Posada has been a shell of his former self all season long due to this injury, and it seems to have affected him not only physically, but mentally as well. While his percentage of throwing out baserunners was expected to drop because of the in jury, his calling of games was not, yet that’s exactly what has happened. In recent starts behind the plate, he has mishandled games pitched by Joba Chamberlain, Andy Pettitte, and Mike Mussina, and you can see the frustration beginning to mount. When those pitchers throw to Jose Molina, there is a huge difference in a positive direction, and I believe that has really taken a toll on Posada mentally. It seems as if he’s pressing, and not playing with the ease of which he has in the past. Furthermore, because of his injury, the Yankees have had to carry three catchers which has severely limited their options off the bench. With Posada on the DL, they can carry an extra outfielder or an extra infielder, depending on what they desire. If I were the Yankees, I’d hope Posada has the surgery now. The last thing they need is another slow-footed first ... Source: www.cbc.ca --- 49 days ago

I missed most of last night’s game, as I went to see Reel Sports Fan’s screening of Don Larsen’s perfect game (more on that in a future Squawk). In the meantime, I wanted to talk about Jorge Posada’s comments to the media about catching, or should I say not catching. Jorge seems a tad snippy, doesn’t he, over the fact that he hasn’t played a game at catcher in the past six games? He even did his trademarked “ask him” comment when reporters asked him about Joe Girardi’s decision to play Jose Molina instead. Here are some of Posada’s words: “I like to catch. Okay?” Posada said. “I’m in the lineup and I’m happy that I’m in the lineup, but I like to catch. I’m a catcher. I’m not a first baseman and I’m not a DH. I like to catch, so I’m looking forward to catching (today).” Posada may like to catch, but the opposition also likes to run off him. Since he came back from his shoulder injury, he’s thrown out exactly one baserunner out of 17, while Molina has thrown out an MLB-leading 24 of 50 players attempting to steal this season. More from today’s paper: Posada insists his arm is 100%, but Girardi believes it’s still not where it was before the injury. Posada said that Girardi knows how he feels about playing behind the plate, but it seems that when the Yankees play speedy teams such as Boston or Tampa Bay, the manager’s preference is to keep Molina’s arm on the field. Asked if he thought he would get the nod behind the plate based on t ... Source: slam.canoe.ca --- 51 days ago

The biggest story of yesterday was not the Yankees having a great-hitting game against the Twins, or even Sidney Ponson (!) getting a standing ovation from the fans. No, the big news is the fact that Jorge Posada is going on the DL again, and might be out for the year. He’s getting an MRI today. There was talk yesterday that Posada would come back in a few weeks and be the DH/first baseman this year, and get the surgery until after the season. But I think Posada should go ahead and get the surgery now. He needs to make sure he’s ready to start next year. Besides, the Yanks already have a cast of thousands for the DH/first baseman spot. Posada’s hitting numbers have been un-Posadalike this year, something he finally admitted yesterday was due to his shoulder. In addition to saying that his shoulder had been bothering him since spring training, he also acknowledged yesterday that he has one throw in his shoulder per game, which is not exactly what you want to hear from your team’s catcher. But here’s the thing. While I do appreciate that Posada has tried to play through the pain this year, he didn’t do Joe Girardi or the team any favors by his snit fit in the media a few weeks back over wanting to be the team’s catcher. Publicly demanding to start as catcher when you can’t throw is not exactly being a team player. In retrospect, the fact that Girardi took Posada out of Saturday’s game after two Athletics ran on him in the ninth inning wa ... Source: www.wireimage.com --- 37 days ago

While the Yankees are dealing with injuries that have shelved their number one starter and starting DH, they’re also attempting to handle the Jorge Posada situation. Posada, suffering from a shoulder heading to surgery, is no longer a viable option behind the plate this year. He’s thrown out just 7 of 39 would-be base stealers [...] ...
