Om reported today that Joost is getting ready to abandon its client and replace it with a web-based product that’s powered by a P2P plug-in. This step certainly makes sense for Joost. The service has been struggling to remain relevant ever since its launch, and the idea of web-based solution has been floating around for [...] ...

Om broke the news today that Joost is abandoning its full-on client for a browser plug-in, falling in line with the way of the web (aka Hulu). We’ve had a chance to poke around the password-protected site, and here’s some of what we saw. The plug-in is a 18.6 MB download, and it installed fine on [...] ...

Joost isn't letting the public try out the site yet but that will change soon. (Credit: Joost) Finally, Joost is going to correct the error that badly hobbled the Web video service many once considered to be a serious YouTube competitor. Currently available for Windows and Mac , Joost is planning to launch a test version of its new site later this month that will feature a browser-based plug-in and will no longer require users to watch via the company's much maligned desktop client. In a not so surprising move, users will be able to embed Joost's videos. CEO Mike Volpi acknowledged in an interview with CNET that the desktop client was one of the company's missteps but that the new browser-based player would provide ease of use, a high-quality video experience, and more content. The new site, according to Volpi, will even be less taxing on laptop batteries. News of Joost's new site was first reported by The Industry Standard . But the big question that Joost must answer is whether the site overhaul comes too late to catch to Hulu or Google's YouTube. Joost pounced onto the online-video scene with seemingly the right combination of founders, investors, and technology. The media instantly christened it a legitimate YouTube killer. The start-up was the brainchild of Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström, the founders of Skype and Kazaa. Among the backers were media conglomerates Viacom and CBS, parent company of CNET, publisher of News.com ...

Word on the street is that Joost will soon ditch its downloadable P2P TV client favor of a browser plugin and will allow P2P streaming over a web-based site. Is that a smart move or is it too little, too late for the online video startup? ...

So much for Joost's carefully prepared plans to release a browser version of their TV over IP service later this month. News leaked this morning that Joost would be abandoning their year old XUL based desktop client in favor of a browser based service that's more like Hulu and YouTube. Users will still be required to download a plugin that facilitates P2P transfers of files, which is still an adoption hurdle. But at least users can watch videos directly in their browser. The new site, which is password protected, is at new.Joost.com. We've obtained screen shots of the service: ...

The news broke today that Joost, the company which in a lot of ways was on the forefront of rich media, is canning its signature desktop client in favor of a purely web based portal. Joost , battling for relevance in the online tv world against Hulu and others, will soon no longer require users to download separate desktop software to access the service (its existing software is based on Xul). Instead users will be able to access Joost via a small browser plugin that will continue to use Joost's P2P technology to distribute video among users quickly. The service launched to considerable fanfare but has fallen off the radar as of late as the company has been plagued by a shortage of content and, well, users. And as the inertia of the online video business moves away from desktop clients and to the Web, it seems Joost has finally seen the writing on the wall and will launch an online video service of its own. ...

Joost – one of last year’s hottest startups and so far one of this year’s biggest flops – is pulling a 180 in strategy. According to Om Malik, the video service will kill off its desktop client and replace it with a Web version that will utilize a “small plugin that would embed itself in the browser and allow you to grab files using the P2P technologies” Although the required download was long one of the biggest criticisms against Joost, the company now faces another big challenge: content. While Joost has scored a number of deals with the likes of CBS and Major League Baseball , one look at the Joost homepage tells you the current state of the company’s catalog. With all due respect to He-Man & Shera, there is no way Joost on the desktop or the webtop can compete with the likes of Hulu, which has thousands of recent episodes of hit shows like The Office, The Daily Show, and House, just to name a few. Considering Hulu is backed by News Corp and NBC Universal, it’s doubtful Joost will be able to do much to improve its catalog either, since Hulu’s huge competitive advantage is its access to content. Making things even worse, Joost’s own investor and partner CBS has many shows available on its website that are nowhere to be found on Joost. While shifting to a Web-based product is a much needed move, it seems like too little, too late, unless the company also makes a radical shift in content strategy. At the moment, Joost – which has ...

Exclusive: In what is likely to be a major shift in the company’s strategy, peer-to-peer startup Joost is going to stop making its desktop client. Filed under: Internet , Video , Browsers Apparently a web browser really is the best place to watch online video. OK, that's probably not at all true. But thanks to YouTube, Hulu, and other Flash video based web sites, most users have gotten used to watching video without launching a separate application. So this week we saw Amazon de-emphasize the download feature of its online video store. Next up? It looks like Joost might end development of its standalone video player and launch a browser-based service instead. The new Joost browser plugin will still reportedly rely on P2P technology to distribute video, thus lightening the bandwidth load for content providers. The video quality should also be higher than what you find on most YouTube-like video sites. One of the things that made Joost different from every other online video platform when the service launched was the company's insistence on creating a standalone video browser. After all, web browsers are designed for navigating text and image-based web sites, not video. Joost was designed to be a bit more TV-like. But I can't say I'm surprised to hear that the company is moving back to the browser, because for many computer users, the web browser is the internet. The image above does not show the new browser plugin. Nobody's seen that yet (except maybe the folks working on it). Rather it shows a Flash based mashup of a Joost-style interface for browsing existing online video s ...

Rich Internet Applications is the fancy name for desktop apps that leverage internet connectivity outside the browser. RIAs, as they're called, are supposed to be ushering in a post-browser future, according to some people. Why, then, has one of the most high profile RIA providers in recent years, Joost , moved to ditch their desktop video player? Adobe's Ryan Stewart, one of the leading advocates of RIAs, posts a list of steps other RIA providers should consider taking in order to avoid the same fate. Are RIAs not shaping up to be everything they promised? We still like some of them quite a bit, but we think Joost is making the right decision to move into the browser. In fact, we think that iTunes Video would be well served to do the same thing. Here's why. RIAs are Good for Background Use We like using desktop Twitter clients like Tweetdeck or Twhirl or other RIAs like Fluid and Snackr . Those are all apps that work well in the background of our workflows. We spend most of our focused time in the browser. Apps that require extended focus, like video viewing, may as well go on in the browser. That way they don't require separate downloads, potentially suspect software, etc. One advantage to an RIA is that it can sit on your computer and wait until you're in between doing other things. If your browser crashes, while you load page after page from different sources, that RIA is still there keeping up in the background - waiting unti ...

Joost , the once-hyped online video startup which was a non-starter with a desktop-only client, is now killing it, Om reports . It will go browser only, and will release a small plugin that would embed itself in the browser and allow you to grab files using the P2P technologies that was the underlying technology for its high-res video service. Even a plugin will be an inhibiting factor in the takeup of the service. But is it too late for the company? It recently expanded into China with its monitory investor Tom. We are hearing from sources that the firm has closed its new round of funding in the last couple of months, though there has been skepticism about the firm's future prospects. With competition intense—YouTube, Hulu, Amazon ( NSDQ: AMZN ), Fancast..you name it --and online ad market not being stellar, acquisition of the company on the cheap side seems to be the only viable medium to long term option… Related Joost Expands Into China With Minority Investor Tom Joost Denies: No "Major Retrenchement", Or "Sole U.S. Focus" Social Media Deals Report: This 199-page report, filled with charts and data, examines the categories, number and size of VC and M&A deal in social media from 2007 through 2008.
