Today we present chapter five of the Rocky Mountain News' "Unconventional Wisdom" series, featuring some notable characters of past Democratic National Conventions offering their advice for Sen. Barack Obama , convention organizers, the city of Denver and average voters watching at home. To follow the entire series, bookmark this link HERE . And keep checking back. Part 5 of 10 Walter Mondale, San Francisco 1980 The story by M.E. Sprengelmeyer is HERE . The video by Judy DeHaas is HERE . The transcript of the Mondale interview is HERE . Portraits are by Chris Schneider . Below is a bit of the back story on the making of the 1984 chapter. * * * I was in high school, still a few months too young to vote, in that year that George Orwell warned us about: 1984 But as a budding political junkie, I followed that year's presidential election as closely as I watched the baseball pennant race that year. (That's saying a lot, considering my beloved Chicago Cubs were making a rare appearance in the playoffs. Go Ryno!) My high school history teacher, H.C. Dennis , spurred my enthusiasm the previous fall, sharing the weekly candidate profiles from the Washington Post magazine. I ate up every word and became convinced that Sen. John Glenn , the former astronaut, would be unstoppable. As the primaries went on, my friend, Steve, and most of the other high school kids who were paying attention - and there weren't many of them - were rooting for the ...

At the top of the first hour of Tuesday's The Situation Room on CNN, fill-in anchor Suzanne Malveaux led with Russia's invasion of Georgia and she cited how “Moscow responded with a show of military muscle that was reminiscent of the Cold War era.” But 40 minutes later, CNN political analyst Bill Schneider contended that raising the very “Cold War” specter CNN had reported could “frighten” voters. He characterized John McCain's assessment, about how Vladimir Putin's "ambitions are to restore the old Russian empire,” as “ominous” and warned that such language may hurt McCain since it could cause “some voters” to “worry: Does he want to start a new Cold War?” Schneider argued: “The risk for McCain is that he could overplay the issue and frighten war-weary voters, whose priorities are at home right now.” Malveaux, at 4:01 PM EDT: Right now huge crowds of Georgians are showing their support for President Mikheil Saakashvili. Georgia moved Thursday to crack down on separatists in two breakaway provinces supported by Russia. Now, Moscow responded with a show of military muscle that was reminiscent of the Cold War era. About 38 minutes later, Malveaux asked Schneider: “Is this McCain's moment, Bill?” As Schneider's answer played out in his report, CNN displayed this text at the bottom of the screen: MCCAIN EDGE ON HANDLING CRISIS BUT HE COULD SCARE WAR-WEARY VOTERS Schneider began: “A major international crisis, it could be just what Joh ...

It's a bit early for politicians to be creating distance between themselves and their party's presidential candidate, is it not? Whether it's because of a (cough, cough) "clerical error" or an exercise in political self-defense, Louisiana Democrat Senator Mary Landrieu has done that. But in a report early this afternoon, Associated Press writer Melinda Deslatte was curiously incurious ( saved at host for future reference) as to why Landrieu might be concerned about being tied too closely to the Illinois senator. Instead, Deslatte turned her report into an exercise in charge-trading between the incumbent and her Republican challenger, the deliciously named John Kennedy: Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, who faces a tough re-election, has had her name removed from a fundraiser announcement for presidential candidate Barack Obama. Landrieu will attend the "Lipstick, Laughter and Libations" fundraiser for Barack Obama at a Washington restaurant next week, but she won't help host it. Landrieu's campaign said her name only was added to the online announcement of the fundraiser on Obama's Web site as a mistake. Her Republican opponent's campaign said she is trying to keep her distance from her party's presidential candidate and removed her name after they pointed it out. "She was never scheduled to host," said Landrieu campaign spokesman Scott Schneider. "She is attending, and there was some sort of clerical error in which somebody said sh ...

A spokesman for Landrieu's GOP opponent, John Kennedy, said he believes the senator removed her name because she doesn't want to be too closely connected with Obama in Louisiana, which has trended Republican in federal elections. ...
